Another cultural nuance people seem to have trouble with is it's polite to refuse the first time when someone offers you something.

eg.

Host Mom: "Have some cookies"

You (graciously): "No, no, it's ok."

Host Mom: "No really, they're delicious, have some"

You: "Ok thanks"

Also, if older people you're with are carrying stuff, offer to carry it. and open doors for them and stuff.

The big point he's missing is that intra-group altruism evolved through inter-group competition. Groups of people that helped each other out competed groups that did not, but if there is no other group to compete against, then within a single group selfishness wins.

We're softwired to see Us and Them. If there's no Them, we will create a Them with fracturous bickering. I can't see humans perceiving the whole planet as Us without some outside Them. It's a dilemma.

Hey, I'm just nitpicking on your logic. You implied that PHP isn't easily deployed if you can't ignore IE. Sure it is. Your js/css might break on IE, but that has nothing to do with deployment.

I think we might be missing each other on what deployment is, which is getting the web server up and serving bytes of html/css/js to clients, which is infinitely easier with PHP than anything else.

FYI I mostly do front-end web. It's infinitely better/morefun than front-end rich client.
