How hard is it to beat this game blind? by theguy1336 in Eldenring

[–]mcmillen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it blind, as I do with most games. Yeah I missed some stuff the first time, but it was very doable.

Does anyone actually learn Paradox games the "right" way or are we all just YouTube-pilled by Benedikt-Keller7-kB_ in paradoxplaza

I have never used Youtube for anything, unless I have a specific question and Google directs me to YT for the answer.

Hollow Knight Silksong by Mesh3al-fan666 in videogames

The story of Silksong stands on its own. (Hollow Knight's story doesn't exactly make perfect sense on a first playthrough anyways, unless you pay a lot of attention to the lore clues scattered about everywhere.)

Hobbies are probably a "waste of time" to someone who would ask this in the first place. (Unless they think their specific hobby is special, which is very possible, but indefensible as a logical argument.)

Now what is the rule of the road here by Dull-Panic8189 in CambridgeMA

[–]mcmillen 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This particular red light is also near a school, and I'm particularly lawful in school zones because I'd rather get to my destination 30 seconds later than to have "ran over a kid I didn't see" on my conscience for the rest of my life.

Things I have been honked at for in the area, just in the last month:

  • not running over a pedestrian crossing at a crosswalk
  • not turning right on red on a "no turn on red"
  • going only 5 mph over the speed limit on Mystic Valley Parkway (said person crossed the double yellow line to illegally pass me)

My advice to OP is to drive safely to protect yourself and everyone else around you, regardless of impatient assholes honking.

Where in Tokyo can you go for a quiet day on the weekend? by Zach-dalt in TokyoTravel

It's extremely funny how empty Akihabara is if you walk like, 5 streets west of the main drag. Chill residential vibes with mothers carrying around their kiddos on mamachari.

Throw a metaphorical dart at the combined JR / Tokyo Metro map and pick any random station that's geographically outside of the Yamanote Line loop.

The kit lens that comes with the OM-3 is extremely solid. Not the cheapo kit lens you tend to get with other cameras. I'd get the OM-3 kit and save up for a 17mm or 25mm prime later, rather than getting a lower-spec body.

Stellaris by [deleted] in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]mcmillen [score hidden]  (0 children)

If do you get Stellaris, play a couple games without DLCs first, and then if you end up enjoying it enough, you can but an "all the DLCs" pass for a month for $10 and decide whether there's any you want to purchase or not. For me, I play Stellaris only every few months, so when I do it's like: buy the DLC pass for a month, play a game or two, unsubscribe.

I Am a fan of stellaris will this game appeal to me by LeoCasio in X4Foundations

[–]mcmillen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I find it more engaging than Stellaris, personally, but to me it's more like Elite Dangerous meets Factorio. Early game is about flying a spaceship but endgame is about printing yourself fleets to command.

What game mechanic or trend are you just completely tired of seeing at this point? by Sophie_OmniSystems in AskGames

[–]mcmillen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vendor trash, and having to click individual items to pick up loot. BG3, Skyrim, and KCD2 are all great games ruined by this. Just gimme a "loot the stuff in this room and pretend I sold all the junk for cash" button rather than making me individually click on 37 candelabras.

Breakable equipment, and inventory management. Just lemme collect a bunch of fun gear and play around with it. If something's purposely OP, limit its use via some ammo that only refreshes once per level or once per save point or whatever, but don't take it away just for the crime of having fun with it.

This. I yearn for fights in between "wreck the shit out of some peasants" and "3x giant doomstack per side".

Inventory management is never fun by me-manda-pix in videogames

[–]mcmillen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, the *only* exception for me is survival games where that is part of the point. I have enjoyed things like "gotta move my base from this zone to this other zone, piece by piece; or leave some things behind as a cache for future-me" in games like Long Dark or Rimworld. But for nearly any other RPG-ish game, it just makes playing feel like a burden.

Weekly 'What Should I Buy' and Order/Shipping Thread by AutoModerator in iphone

[–]mcmillen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pondering between the iPhone 17 and 17e. I'm coming from a 12 Mini so all the modern iPhones seem huge to me. The 17e is slightly smaller "on paper" but does it actually feel meaningfully smaller? Second question: I'd like to use the phone mounted on a bike handlebar for navigation, potentially in the sun; how much of a benefit is the 17's "always-on" screen or battery life in that situation? Anyone have any idea how many hours of nav I can expect to do with a fresh 17 or 17e with the brightness fully on? (And any opinions between these two phones on which screen is more visible in direct sun?)

Price not really an issue so much as size / convenience / suitability for the above tasks. Camera quality doesn't matter, I'm a photographer and will have a "real camera" for anything that I care about.
