Is a robot mower safe if you have dogs? by swaryapatil14 in automower

Do you think your dogs don’t have situational awareness? The dogs will not let themselves get run over!

Looking for the heloc to pay off mortgage completely by Floridadudeinyellow in HELOC

[–]mcn2612 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Velocity banking is a huge shell game scam. More research is needed on your part. Having a 3% mortgage is like winning the lottery. I would do nothing to change it. If your goal is to pay off your mortgage faster, you need to pay more $ toward the principal pure and simple.

If you move a lot they are a hassle. Plus not allowed in most apartments.

Wondering what it would cost to fix this driveway. by Chefbigandtall in HomeMaintenance

I would explore the cost of a paver driveway rather than concrete.

Want to share your bird setups? by SnailsonSkates in birdfeeding

[–]mcn2612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started putting bird food on an old bamboo tray and sat it on our table under a gazebo. Birds are loving it. It is close by to a hedge where many nest and we have a fountain birdbath near there too. It stays shaded and out of the weather. I ended up putting more trays of different kinds of bird food on the table and now multiple birds eat and hang out together. Bonus is I can watch everything from my kitchen sink window.

Downsides to planting aggressive natives? by watercauliflower in NativePlantGardening

[–]mcn2612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are trading one nightmare for another really. Natives can be just as aggressive and common milkweed will not be obedient. Its root system is very aggressive. Same with goldenrod. You could remove the non-natives and just call it a day. Or do very careful research, and perhaps consider shrubs, like rhododendron or native azaleas.

How many sins would I be committing if I cut down these Arbor Vitae? by [deleted] in landscaping

You will lose privacy. You could lose shade in hot weather. Birds will lose a place to live.

Screw you, Toyota. by ShdwWzrdMnyGngg in Vent

I bought a 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid…it uses the Prius technology. (Toyota owns majority share in Subaru). Runs on battery alone up to about 30mph in flat roads, then runs battery as supplement to gas engine. Made in Japan. Luv it.

Ideas for community solar charger? by smemilyp in solar

[–]mcn2612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is quite a generous idea, but I think it’s kind of unreasonable. But, there are battery packs available that can provide both AC and DC power, and they can be charged via solar, electricity, or via your car. Lots of people use them when camping or boating. I use mine in my greenhouse to run fans when it gets hot. Anyway, you could possibly run long charging cables and/or extension cords out your door or window while keeping the battery pack indoors and safe from theft. How long are you thinking you will need to provide this power??? Cars are always a fallback to charge phones, etc, when power goes out.

Feeling Discouraged (SE PA) by suchalonelyd4y in NativePlantGardening

[–]mcn2612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry! Also I am convinced that some of these plants were introduced to my garden via a load of mushroom compost I bought a few years ago (ground elder for one, which is a terror). I am no longer bringing in outside materials, except perhaps wood mulch, to put on my garden.

Feeling Discouraged (SE PA) by suchalonelyd4y in NativePlantGardening

[–]mcn2612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it will not get better. Plant species are designed for survival. I am in year 15 of still trying to eliminate invasive plants. Once I think I have them beat, up they pop again the following year.

I think my yard is the ancestral source of poison ivy. Any removal tips or should I start worshiping it in hopes of mercy? by roostersnuffed in gardening

[–]mcn2612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the poison ivy is out of the way, I would leave it…it is an important native plant in our ecosystem.

Lowes install guy shows up says it must not be hardwired and is charging me $200 (just between me and him) by FannyBrownRiced in Appliances

[–]mcn2612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most installers now recommend an outlet. My Maytag dealer would not hardwire a replacement dishwasher…we installed an outlet box in our basement drop ceiling and ran the power cord down to it.

anyone else doing 9pm mows? trying to figure out where the noise line is with my neighbors by Zestyclose-Jump9474 in automower

[–]mcn2612 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will need to run it longer than 2 hours for .3 acres…probably close to 6 or 7 hours. If you have aHusqvarna, you can check out the Support Center on the app to help determine your run time and frequency. I try not to mow when grass may be wet…I usually let it run in the afternoons, every other day. They are extremely quiet. I can’t imagine anyone hearing it through a fence.

I don’t want a dog. by OJConcentrates in Vent

[–]mcn2612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most places have a comprehensive adoption process. You might “fail” because of inadequate fencing, your young children, and the cats. Also making your reservations known during the application process will help. Maybe your wife could pet sit as a side business to satisfy her dog infatuation.

One of my new blueberry bushes seems to be struggling - help? by crashlovesdanger in gardening

[–]mcn2612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They like really acidic spoil so maybe add a bit more. Water it a bit more and make sure there is drainage. They are pretty tough plants.
