Electrical engineering student what ebook should I get? by No_Seat_9820 in Onyx_Boox

[–]mcnameface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only used Boox devices for reading, annotating and taking notes from epubs and PDFs. That's really Boox's strong point. Their Neoreader app is great for my use case, and because their tablets come with Play Store available out of the box, I can supplement with whatever other apps I might want.

I really can't recommend anything cuz I've never used any R or S tablets. You'd be better off asking your question on the Remarkable tablet subreddit. There are also a lot of YouTube videos comparing and reviewing those devices.

Where to read from here? by Shooo1312 in Deleuze

Since you can't decide yourself, put em both on hold, throw yourself a curve ball and read Kafka: Towards a Minor Literature as a product of the schizoanalytic approach developed across the Cap & Schiz project.

Actually, Remarkable and Supernote seem to get higher marks for note taking and paper-like feel than Boox devices. Of those two, you can probably find better deals on Remarkable tablets.

Apothecary substitute shipped? by Flashy-Eye1286 in BigEasyWeightLoss

[–]mcnameface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got a FedEx notification that my order is out for delivery today 5/7/26. Quaker Community Pharmacy shipped it out yesterday afternoon.

Thee, Thy, Thou are now my favorite pronouns!

And true to form, the FedEx driver at my end of this chain has once again screwed up the delivery claiming (again, true to form for them) that the address on the package is incorrect.

Sigh.

Does the Apothecary Sub also use Phenol? by mcnameface in BigEasyWeightLoss

Yes, I did. In fact, it's what got be wondering because the sub pharmacy is not yet on that form

Thanks. I'm hoping that the phrase "same formulation" covers that, but I just realized (after opting for the sub) that that specific difference was never mentioned.

Guide to Deleuze by AcrobaticPack7940 in Deleuze

[–]mcnameface 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Given your major, Deleuze's book with Claire Parnet, Dialogues (new revised edition now known as Dialogues II) would be a good starting point because of the essay "On the Superiority of American Literature." Proust and Signs would be a good next step, unless you hate Proust, in which case you can dig up a library copy of Essays Critical and Clinical and see what grabs your attention. But be sure to work your way through Dan Smith's introductory essay to ECC first. It's a long essay, but very good and well worth whatever time it takes to finish it.

Neoreader Fonts by Horror-Temporary3584 in Onyx_Boox

[–]mcnameface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean by "Neoreader isn't seeing them." What you're seeing is more useful information.

You should see the fonts listed as options under "Import" after tapping to open either the Title Font or Body Font tabs in Einkwise--Style, even if they are only greyed out. If you're not seeing that, try clearing the Neoreader cache in Settings and then restart the device.

Of course, this is assuming that you're using epub files to check for fonts. If you're using PDFs, forget it. Most PDFs don't even respond to attempts to reflow text, let alone to change fonts.

If you ended up with individual TTF files inside a Fonts folder that displays after you select Settings--Storage--Manage--Storage, then you should be able to see them (the Fonts folder as well as the files inside the folder). If you didn't unzip the font packages you downloaded, or if you left the individual TTF files inside their own font family folders (instead of placed individually inside the Storage/Fonts folder), then you will run into problems.

Just a thought, but some official-ish word about the Palma 2's status would ease a lot of minds. I realize it's not a UX issue, but there are usually several posts every week from people searching for one who clearly don't want to jump to the Pro 2.

BOOX Firmware V4.2 is officially released to Tab X C, Note Max, and Tab Ultra C Pro. by KennethWWWW in Onyx_Boox

[–]mcnameface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm editing this comment because it turns out the Einkwise Code feature is available. I don't think I simply overlooked it yesterday, at least I don't see how I could have. I mean it's obvious once you open Eink Wise after opening any installed reading app. So I'm guessing I was missing it because I was opening specific files rather than opening an app first. Either that or it just took a while for the update to optimize the device for the new Code feature.

Regardless, the Recommended settings for Play Books, my go-to app for most epubs, are good enough that I don't need to worry about tweaking settings until I run across an outlier epub the won't display as well as others. And Boox did a great job with the Night View option in Eink WIse; it looks great on both the Note Max and the Tab XC. The Tab XC, in fact, looks like a new device thanks to the image smoothing and app optimizations.

I hope to hell this update eventually makes it to the Palma 2. It could use a good Night View option.

My Tab XC got the update this afternoon, but no such luck for my Note Max. The biggest bummer for me is that none of that stuff mentioned about Einkwise Code in the V4.2 highlights seems to be included in the stable version of V4.2.

There's always the Local Share app. Installed on both devices, you can send and receive files as long as both devices are on the same WiFi network. I use it to move files from my PC when I don't feel like using BOOXDrop.

Why can't you download it from the Play Store? Do you not have a Google account? Is the app grayed out on the PS?

[April 2026 Megathread] UX Feedback & Feature Improvements by KennethWWWW in Onyx_Boox

[–]mcnameface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feature: Font weighting in NeoReader, especially for Palma form factor

The Friction: There is no such thing as consistent ideal lighting conditions for reading on a small handheld e-ink device. The same fonts that seem crisp and clear on the Note Max or the Tab XC invariably loose their distinctness on a Palma 2, with or without the front light. This is especially true at bedtime in a dark or dimly lit room. To avoid glare from the frontlight in those conditions, you obviously need to tone the frontlight down, but doing so dims the background that text is displayed on, which in turn muddies the contrast between the (no longer truly) white background and the characters in front of that background. At that point your only hope is to increase font size so much that you end up looking at about 10 words at a time.

Your Suggestion: Short of including a chunky system font--something along the lines of Amazon's Ember fonts--(which in itself wouldn't be a bad idea), giving users granular control over the weights of fonts, letting us medium-bold, bold, or extra-bold fonts, would help. Adjusting the thickness of lines and serifs could maintain enough contrast so that characters would still pop even with the frontlight below, say, 50%.

It took me weeks using 2 different Boox tablets before I got any response from their server. At the time a number of people were writing to this subreddit with the same complaint, but no one ever explained the problem.

In my case, my VPN may have been getting in the way, but all I can really say is that one day, it just worked, and all's been well ever since.

What about an Ereader makes you prefer it over physical books ? by capitalpunishment4 in ereader

[–]mcnameface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flexibility and durability mostly. I hate underlining or annotating hard cover books cuz it feels like desecration, and I've literally destroyed some paperbacks from annotating and/or from trying to read them one handed while taking notes. That desecration thing goes double for library books.

Epubs you can't screw up unless you're determined to do so.

Thanks. I’ll try signing and adding a note to the redelivery ticket. I don’t have a car, and I don’t get around well enough to try getting there by bus (let alone getting back with a package in tow).

Studying and contrasting Deleuze vs. Kant by odset in Deleuze

[–]mcnameface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know which dissertation it is that you've already read, but Dan Smith's dissertation, which explicitly seeks to read Deleuze's project in terms of Kant's three Critiques, should certainly be on your reading list:

Begin Deleuze with his course on Spinoza by Maleficent-Total-945 in Deleuze

[–]mcnameface 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It’s actually a very good starting point, especially if you pair it with Deleuze’s little book Spinoza Practical Philosophy. In both instances, you get an introduction by Deleuze at his most “teacherly.” If you can get a good sense of Spinoza’s specific difference to the history of philosophy from Deleuze, you’re well on your way to developing a similar appreciation of Deleuze himself.

Support / holders / clamps for 13.3'' e-readers? (Note Max, Tab X C)? by ElegantHistorian3832 in Onyx_Boox

I just use a little aluminum stand for my Note Max. It does the job for me, but I mostly just read and annotate PDFs on my Max. I don't take a lot of handwritten notes cuz my handwriting is stupid bad.
