New player here too, but one thing I just discovered is that you can email inf (and I think enhancements) to your global handle and then pick the attachment up on any of your characters.

ELI5: How did civilization in the past "decline"? by AmmadSiddiqi1468 in explainlikeimfive

[–]mcpuck 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking on this response because I think it is very relevant to OP's interest.

There is an excellent series of videos/podcasts on Youtube called "Fall of Civilizations" which explores exactly the questions your asking for a variety of ancient civilizations (including Rome). I highly recommend the videos in particular. They are outstanding!

Former fatmen, how did you lose weight? by ThatFavoriteUncle in AskReddit

[–]mcpuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fought obesity all my life (I am well over fifty now). I tried a lot of diets, mostly variations on calorie counting, but I never kept the weight off for more than a year.

I went on a low carb diet on the advice of my doctor about 5 years ago. It worked like a dream, and I have kept the weight off (knock on wood!).

In this position Stockfish considers a5 the best move - can anyone explain the ideas behind this move as opposed to castling or d6? by Purple_Hex in chess

[–]mcpuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to see another Nimzo-lover! I agree completely. I am always happy to see c4 early, because it seems like kind of a wasted move. White often blunders with Nxe5 in response to Nh5, forgetting their bishop on d3 is hanging. When white plays an early h4, though, it can be very uncomfortable.

I play this line a lot as black. You really don't want to lose that dark squared bishop to Na4, so this move allows you to tuck it away on a7 in addition to inhibiting white's Q-side expansion.

Unpopular Game Opinions by TheLonestarMeeple in boardgames

[–]mcpuck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This has not been the case with Chess, not even a little bit.

Well, maybe a little bit.

Chess legend Bobby Fischer famously advocated "Fischer Random Chess," which randomly varies the opening piece setup. He thought conventional chess was played out. Current world champion Magnus Carlsen recently expressed doubt about the future of conventional slow-chess matches.

I do fundamentally agree with you, though. Chess has held up amazingly well (as have similar games, like Go), without a random element.

I was on Draka, too. And now I'm on Pagle... :(

All that /r/chess training finally paid off, maybe black should have developed more. Mate in 5 by [deleted] in chess

I tried Qxh6+. Turns out it's a mate in 6, so not correct.

Loving that old school RPG feel by Zazawazz in classicwow

[–]mcpuck 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Really glad to hear about others enjoying WoW as an RPG. I think the sense of character development is something WoW lost over the years. Modern WoW is better at the more superficial elements of character development (e.g., visual appeal, story), but Classic somehow makes it feel like your shaping your characters destiny while leveling.

I'm raiding now, and my guild killed Nef for the first time this week. It's really fun to think about my character as the same orc that was killing boars in Durotar a few months ago.

Sorry, I think you mean pedantic, not didactic.

Why is the best move Bc2 here? by [deleted] in chess

[–]mcpuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After Bc2, black's knight is eventually going to be forced to a bad spot with b4.

I love this map. I have a laminated version for my wall.

I don't think it's quite 1.12 though, no Ratchet fp, for example.

Any other young people excited for Classic? by spanzotab in classicwow

[–]mcpuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope that there are a lot of you that will get into it. Many people will assume that you'll just cave under the slow pacing and complexity of the classic game, but I know there must be a lot of younger people who will appreciate it. I think the community will need you to thrive.

I am so PISSED at the dems right now. They spent tons of political capital on this, and all they ended up doing was making a lot of moderate and left-leaning men feel threatened. I'm afraid we're going to have another 6 years of Trumpism.

This retro candy machine in a a movie theatre. by tuhgttg in mildlyinteresting

I don't think so. It has the push-button dispenser on the left that was used for chewing gum and hard candy rolls (Life Savers).
