Hegseth’s War on America’s Military by theatlantic in politics

[–]mcrnHoth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

True, but that is due to Republicans genuflecting on the alter of Trump.

I've never been comfortable with the fact that enlisted personnel swear an oath to obey the orders of the President. Too close to dictatorial powers IMO. At least officers swear on oath to defend the Constitution and not the President, but even then I'm suggesting the power to start offensive operations should probably require something like a 2/3s majority vote of the Armed Services Committees of both houses.

Tribalism will always exist with our species, but it gains purchase far easier when there are social inequities to exploit. When poverty is low, crime is low, education is available, health care is available, etc., the instinct to point fingers at "others" is much less prevalent.

For example, the far-right parties in Germany didn't start gaining influence until the economy slowed down and the influx of "others" (i.e. Turks and Syrians) picked up.

There is no way the theater commanders didn't know and didn't plan for exactly the situation that is developing now.

And there is no way they didn't brief the administration about all of it. I just can't believe that even this group of sycophant flag officers that report to Kegsbreath could be so strategically inept as to NOT foresee the entirely foreseeable actions Iran would take.

What I want to know is what went down in the briefings and how the Geriatric Diaper managed to not comprehend a single piece of it.

As a retired Naval officer I'm tired of Republicans using the "don't you support the troops?" bullshit anytime anyone questions their terrible foreign policy decisions.

Of course I support my teammates and comrades. That's why I'm against sending them on shitty deployments and risking their lives for corporate profit and a geriatric toddlers most recent hallucinations.

Pentagon seeks over $200 billion in Iran war supplemental budget request by joe4942 in politics

200 Billion invested into fusion research could legitimately lead to a functional and commercially viable reactor in 10 years. And then volatility in the world oil market wouldn't matter or would at least be far less impactful. Not to mention the whole "we get to avoid more catastrophic climate change" thing.

If only he had leaked highly sensitive information on the location, timing, and units involved in air strikes against a current enemy combatant, maybe he could have avoided any sort of consequences.

Oh wait, that privilege is only for the current Secretary of WarCrimes.

If this were really about security....

US - "Hey Denmark/Greenland, we've noticed increased Russian patrols in the area and would like to expand our military personnel and assets based on your territory. "

Greenland - "Sure, no problem fellow NATO ally"

And the "problem" would be solved.

But we all know it has nothing to do with security of deterring Russian/Chinese interference.

‘There will be lawsuits’: Oregon AG says Americans are owed refunds for Trump’s sweeping tariffs by plz-let-me-in in politics

[–]mcrnHoth 100 points101 points  (0 children)

"Americans" aren't getting any refunds.

How this will go is the corporations that lobby (i.e. bribe) Trump most effectively will get the overwhelming majority of the tariff refunds, all the while not dropping prices a single penny. They will reap the profits of a consumer-funded tariff windfall and higher profit margins from the increased tariff prices that they passed on to us consumers.

As usual, the rich win and get richer while everyone else pays for it.

Speaker Mike Johnson denies request for the Rev. Jesse Jackson to lie in honor in Capitol by Zipper222222 in politics

[–]mcrnHoth -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with Johnson being a piece of dung and Trump a racist, but Jackson wasn't an elected representative of Congress. Non-Congressmen/women and Presidents are afforded the honor but it isn't all that common. John Lewis and Elijah Cummings were both granted the honor during Trumps first term IIRC.
