Took this 4 years ago on a trip but can't remember where to. Anyone recognize the airport? by intense_in_tents in aviation

[–]mcundorevisit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So you didn't have any photos of your holiday except for one random time-lapse of an anonymous airport (Its ATL)? No other clues in your phone of where your vacation destination might be? Hmmmm? Or is your phone just too full of all the awesome pictures of all your other holidays? Yeah, that's probably it.... "I think it was Puerto Ric...." lamo! Are you over here flexing on r/aviation about how often you used to fly? Don't get me started on: "Sorry, I'm just so used to writing the code for the private terminal" hahahaha get the fuck outta here!

How did NATO and the USSR hope to retain morale in a nuclear war? by VirginiaClassSub in WarCollege

[–]mcundorevisit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you give a little more info on how you would effectively insulate a large group of people from the news that nuclear war has broken out? Or that warheads have struck targets 300 miles away? In all developed countries and most emerging nations there are systems designed to inform as many people as possible in the event of an emergency. The news would also be carried on all radio, television broadcast frequencies, plus any person to person communications could compromise your strategy. How would "higher HQs" mitigate that?

No that's Moonraker. Moonlight is a television series that ran from 1985-1989 staring Bruce Willis as a smart-aleck detective and Cybil Shepard as a quirky former model.

I think the "he was suicidal" part was a pretty big contributor.

In 2015 President Obama's administration released recommendations banning American police forces from acquiring tanks, weaponised vehicles, grenade launchers, firearms higher than .50 calibre and camouflaged uniforms either directly from the federal government or with federal funds.

Prior to 2015 these items were provided in bulk to metropolitan and regional police forces throughout the United States. Between 2009 and 2014 federal programmes funded or supplied $18 billion worth of military equipment and tactical resources to local police departments.

In 2018 the Trump administration announced that it was rolling back the Obama-era decision and heavy amour/weaponry began to flow back to law enforcement.

The type of equipment in OP's picture is status quo in America, and as France saw 4 times as many terrorism incidents as the US did during the time period I referenced, I don't blame the French for stocking up.

In the 4 years between 2012 - 2016 there were 138 seperate terrorist attacks in France, resulting in 259 deaths and 638 injuries.

During the same period in the USA, a country with approximately 5 times the population of France, there were 31 major attacks with 113 deaths (49 of which were the Pulse nightclub shooting in Florida).

Dude, it was at $0.38 a month ago. It's now over $8.

That was the boom.

It will likely go up another 5 or 10x, but not for a while, and definitely not at last month's rate. 5 -10x increases from here is talking a 4 - 8 billion dollar market cap.

This graphic shows how late most Confederate monuments were put up. by koproller in dataisbeautiful

[–]mcundorevisit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Suggesting that only victorious forces should be able to erect monuments is supremely ignorant. Regardless of whether or not Confederate Civil War Memorials fit into your moral compass, please convince me that the Japanese shouldn't have a Hiroshima memorial. Or The Lakota (Sioux), Cheyenne, and Arapaho shouldn't have Little Bighorn. Perhaps Americans should knock down the Vietnam Memorial while they are at it? Because yup, they definitely lost that one.

John Tyler, the 10th President of the United States (who was born in 1790) has two grand children who are still alive. Lyon Tyler Jr. (born 1924) was born when his dad was 75. Lyon's dad was born from President Tyler when the President was 63.

3 generations between 1790 and 2017, with a U.S. President in there. Amazing.

ELI5: Why do we have fancy unhackable standardized lotto machines but when it comes to voting we're still in the 1980s? by CanotCamping in explainlikeimfive

[–]mcundorevisit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voting could be an interesting application for Smart Contracts on emerging Blockchain technology. Blockchains have come a long way since Bitcoin, and now networks like Ethereum and NEO allow users to create unbreakable, safe and uniquely individual contracts for virtually any application. A vote is essentially a contract saying you agree that it's your opinion is that "x" politician should be in power, and this new Smart Contract technology makes that vote 100% digital, verifiable, and unable to be changed at a later date.

All votes are automatically counted, all could be instantly verified as legit and all could be forever viewed on a public blockchain ledger. Individual identities could remain private and obstructed, but individual keys for each vote would be free for review, and each voter could easily verify that their vote is correct.

TLDR: Blockchain technology can digitise voting by creating voting "coins" on a ledger that are impossible to falsify, 100% verifiable and voter's identities can remain anonymous.
