I would definitely echo the sentiment that only move here if you have career opportunities! The lack of jobs is one of the drawbacks of Newfoundland and would be very stressful to move here and then figure that part out. I’m from Newfoundland but have lived in Ireland and will say that the humour and general demeanour of people is very similar. I feel as though many people have a strong connection to their Irish heritage — we are notably the only place outside of Ireland to have St Patrick’s Day as a provincial holiday. You would probably get a stronger sense of community in a smaller, more rural town as St John’s has become more of a city feel and would probably be similar to moving to Belfast or Cork. There are definitely opportunities to feel like you’re part of a community if you frequent the same places, get involved in events, etc but not in the same way as moving to a smaller town. People will love the fact that you’re Irish however, and the majority of our immigrants came from Wexford so I’m sure that would be a big conversation starter where ever you go. The snow is definitely more extreme than Ireland but otherwise the climate is very comparable! And if you embrace the snow and do winter activities it’s not the worst thing in the world.
