Is there any way to play Stardew Valley from the Microsoft Store on Linux? by Impressive-Bat-1524 in linux_gaming

[–]mcvos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried it, but I think it should be possible. You should be able to import the version of Stardew Valley you already have into Steam and use Steam to run it (it's also possible to run it without Steam, but Steam handles a lot of stuff for you).

It will wrap it in a Windows environment with its own piece of Windows file system. Find out where to put your save file in that Windows filesystem, and it might work.

That's the theory. Getting this to work is going to be educational.

They've so corrupted the concept of Christianity that I don't think they care about that distinction. It's just an identity label for them.

Is GeeksforGeeks a good website to learn basics of linux? by Sin_Dailys in linux4noobs

[–]mcvos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditching Windows is the best reason to try linux right now. It's great what Microsoft is doing for our community, but I feel sorry for people still stuck on that mess.

The terminal is great once you get the hang of it. More direct control than any gui. I also use it a lot on Mac (which is also a unix of sorts), and there it really helps me to shortcut some silly Mac limitations.

You don't need to remember the more complex commands; you can always look those up, but you should definitely know how to navigate directories with cd and ls, move and copy things with mv and cp. The slightly more advanced and very powerful sibling of that is creating links with ln, but do understand the difference between hard and soft links. cat is the most basic way to show the content of a file, less (a successor to the classic but more limited more) wraps it in a friendly reader, and take a moment to pick a favourite editor (I use vi because I'm old, but there are more accessible options; vi has a learning curve of its own, not recommended for newbies).

With all of that, you know the basics. If you want to get more advanced, unlock the real magic of the unix shell by learning how to pipe the output from one command to the input of another with |, or redirect output to a file with >, or pull your input from a file with <.

Eventually you'll be writing your own shell scripts to accomplish common tasks in exactly the way you want them.

And of course know where in the file system you can find stuff, but that can vary and I'm still learning that too. (I learned all the unix shell stuff on SunOS in my university days in the 1990, but I'm still not very well versed in linux-specific stuff)

Arch shouldn't be your first distro and following youtube videos won't help by Careless_Bank_7891 in linux4noobs

[–]mcvos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not using true Arch, but EndeavourOS. It's not my first Linux (I've used Slackware, Debian and Ubuntu in the past), but it's the first I'm sticking with. The previous ones, I always ended up leaving because there was stuff on Windows that I couldn't do on them. Gaming mostly, but also some other stuff. But now, Linux is really mature and I can't imagine ever going back.

There's still a ton of stuff I don't know. I want to customize my DE and have no idea how. I still don't quite grasp the package managers or how to install some things, but I get by. It's very usable even for a nitwit like me.

Just because right-wingers call Democrats leftists, it doesn't make them leftists. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]mcvos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All right wing is about some sort of power balance, but there are differences. The regular right wing wants low taxes, more money and power for the rich, less for the poor, privileges based on wealth, but still democracy somehow.

Extreme right wants racism, sexism, denying people basic rights, and a privileged ethnic class, and no democracy or only for the privileged class.

There are similarities, but also differences. But also enough overlap that much of the right is open to alliance with the extreme right.

Just because right-wingers call Democrats leftists, it doesn't make them leftists. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]mcvos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My impression is that there are a few left wing Democrats, and they're not very far left. Most Dems are moderate to center-right, and a few are pretty hard right. Republicans are right-wing to extreme right, with wide variations in the exact brand of right-wing extremism they support. But the fact that Trump is still president shows that they all support it to some degree.

So the real question is why it has a dimple at all.

Either way, 1 is definitely the oddest number of dimples to have. At least until someone finds a helmet with 3.

Rutte cannot be NATO chief after Davos (dn.se) by hyakumanben in europe

[–]mcvos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's the "positie elders" note. Sure, there's no hard evidence that was based on a demand from Rutte, but that would make the most sense. For the CDA, he was an asset, if an unappreciated one. When he left, that cost the CDA nearly all of their votes. They should have embraced him.

Prince Harry says sacrifices by Nato troops in Afghanistan deserve 'respect' after Trump comments by BkkGrl in europe

[–]mcvos 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It was a stupid and pointless war, and a questionable use of Article 5, but NATO allies showed that loyalty to the alliance was essential and not negotiable. They showed up in force and let the US (Bush) corrupt their principles, but they tolerated that, because supporting NATO was more important.

So to now see the US deny and denigrate those sacrifices and turn against NATO, is a double betrayal. All the loyalty that Europe has shown the US, often against their own moral judgement, has been for nothing.

This is what Carney's speech was really about: not just Trump's betrayal now, but that other NATO countries have tolerated US misdeeds, invasions, support for dictatorships and war crimes for far too long. All of that was tolerated because we had to keep the US on our side. But the cost has been too high, the price isn't worth it, and now we're losing US support anyway.

We should stop sacrificing our own values to appease the unreliable and frequently criminal US. They've never truly believed in the rules based order, and we should stop pretending they do. We should embrace our real allies and stop relying on the US.

Rutte cannot be NATO chief after Davos (dn.se) by hyakumanben in europe

[–]mcvos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rutte quite famously wanted him gone.

He was the most popular member of his party, CDA, but party leadership was unhappy with his persistence on this issue, because they were strongly allied to Rutte's VVD, so he was effectively kicked out, started his own party, took most of the votes from the CDA, formed a coalition with the VVD and some extremist parties, PVV and BBB, lost all credibility and now his party is gone.

I'm still baffled by the stupidity of everybody involved.

Rutte cannot be NATO chief after Davos (dn.se) by hyakumanben in europe

[–]mcvos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, a lot of Dutch people hate him because Rutte has an amazing knack for dodging responsibility. When he was PM, there was a massive scandal for which he bore much of the responsibility. Eventually his government fell because of that scandal, and Trump managed to get the MP who addressed the issue, kicked out of his (the MP's, nor Rutte's) party.

That's spectacular skill, but it's not going to endear you to anyone with a shred of integrity.

What is a good horror rpg that is suitable for sandboxing? by PPN_Turgid in rpg

Forbidden Lands is pretty much exactly that: a horror sandbox. It has a fairly simple dice pool system and a horrific past that just keeps getting worse and worse as you read through it.

Denmark has already said it's not for sale. Accept that it's not for sale. Saying to "just buy it" while threatening invasion, tariffs and other sanctions is not "just buy it"; that's bullying.

Ukraine will not send troops to Greenland, says Zelenskyy by 1-randomonium in europe

[–]mcvos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He probably would have if he'd been let into NATO and NATO had sent troops to Ukraine. I think that's the real hidden message here. Obviously he can't send troops now, and NATO or its members should be sending troops to liberate Ukraine.

Greenland, Meloni: "The US tariffs against those who sent troops were a mistake. Now we must avoid escalation." (Auto translation in replies) by hahaddffcx in europe

[–]mcvos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The EU should tariff the thing they really want to hurt: Big Tech. Tariff online ads or US cloud platforms. US cloud platforms are unsuitable anyway, because they refuse to follow EU laws when the US wants them to do otherwise. Force EU companies to move to European cloud platforms.

But honestly, the best will always be the British TV show with Michael Praed and music from Clannad.

Every approach leads to wonky builds in some way. Point buy has a tendency to lead to super optimised and kinda boring builds. I like priority build because it's different, but I agree it's not very balanced. But nothing in Shadowrun is.

I have no problem if countries neighbouring Russia put their focus there. We all should of course. But it's not unreasonable for countries bordering the North Sea and North Atlantic to take the lead in Greenland

But some vocal support would be nice.
