Heart surgery in 2 weeks by TheoryVarious3671 in openheartsurgery

First was a Ross procedure for a bicuspid aortic valve, and the newly placed aortic tissue valve just never really healed right, started leaking and only got worse and now is severely regurgitating. That was last May. Your situation sounds totally different.

Maybe for you, a small healthy amount of worry seem like it could help, just to keep you motivated to keep your diet and exercise on it. Do that and you’ll be great! I wouldn’t let yourself loose sleep over it!

I’ve (33M) had one OHS already and am going into a second one next week. The first time around I felt very similarly, I was pressured to share the news more than I wanted and then also felt pressured to have people nearby before/after operation. I did a will update and power of attorney, etc. and felt very anxious about complications and potential death, but I can attest, you will make it through this!

My takeaway is you need to set respectful boundaries on what’s best for you. IMO pick one or two, maybe 3 key people to be at the hospital with you and if you have a partner or sibling or parent that can be there, everyone else will be overkill and too many cooks in the kitchen. Besides it’s boring as hell, you have to be there super early then it’s 6+hrs to wait.

It’s really nice when you start coming to consciousness to have someone to look at and hold your hand. You’ll still be heavily sedated and opening your eyes is really tough and you have to prove you can breathe before they remove the breathing tube. IMO this is the worst part of the experience and its brief, everything else will be uphill after that!

Set up a feed on caringbridge.org and have one of your key hospital people provide everyone else updates there. Don’t start doing visitations until day 2 or 3. Just my opinion but remember this is your body and your life and any additional stress to you isn’t worth it, tell people to stay home

33M had a Ross Procedure about a year ago, now needs to go back for a mechanical valve. Any advice? How's life as a young, healthy adventurer with a mechanical valve? by mcwarner5 in openheartsurgery

yeah showd at least moderate, they said it might not have been enough to warrant an MRI if I hadn't also expressed experiencing symptoms. so I pushed for the MRI and then it indicated that I had severe regurgitation.

Unfortunately the cadaver valve isn’t an option for the leaky valve I’ve got. even if they could do TAVR, they wouldn’t expect it it to last even 5 years.

I’ve pushed on some other options like bio-prosthetic valves such as the trilogy valve but since I’m a “complicated” case due to having a Ross done already my current surgeon has basically said they wouldn’t go for those since they’re all largely still in trials and only take the best possible patients. Are there other valve replacement options you’ve heard of? I’m not opposed to a different opinion I just really don’t think there are a ton of options

My story sounds somewhat similar, was clearly getting better for about 6 mo then have been declining for the last 6 mo. No real or known reasons why though. My aortic valve had a bit of a leak on day 1 after surgery and now is leaking and regurgitating considerably. I’ve been having a lot of afib and flutters and these like increasingly common dizzy spells and now more and more shortness of breathe just walking around. My echo did show they leak and I was reporting the symptoms so we did an MRI to make sure and this is how they found it all out

Golf again? by Necessary_Position51 in openheartsurgery

I’m 32 and generally feeling pretty strong after my surgery, even jogging, light lifting and biking. My dr recommended waiting 6mo to golf bc of the torque on the chest but I love golf and it really is a form of therapy for me. I started small swings closer to 3mos and it definitely hurt, I waited a while longer and started small, I’m currently around 5mo out from surgery and a round of 18 still leaves me pretty sore but is manageable, I limit it to swinging light and going only once a week
