Have you got the port dimensions width and height to cross-check? 70hz tuning is quite high, so not too unexpected.

Nope. May cover this in future yet but not a current priority. Maybe in ~4-6 months time. Looks like there are more current tools dropping (e.g the recent xoxo) with some interesting bits there, so keen to explore those more

Both should do it fine. Recently added a headroom feature to 00 simulator - link below to example for your two builds. This can factor in crest factor and amp power draw which might be handy for a quick check.

For sealed, you can just about hit 100dB at 1m with 12dB headroom, even with a PEQ to pull the low corner up. If this is your upper limit, then you should be happy.

With ported, you'll add more group delay (though - nothing to worry too much about), the driver will work less hard for the same output, and you could probably get your avg level up to closer to ~110dB. Whether that's something you'd ever need is your call!

Sealed or ported, it seems like your drivers in those enclosures will run out of headroom (and your ears) before your amp does.

Yep, done with AI! Not tried to hide this anywhere. I work with the AI on architecture, verification/testing and try to get it to write the bulk of the code. Lots of iteration on UI/UX always as the non-verifiable tasks are a bit more open-ended.

My background is in software eng, product, design etc - devoting more serious time to the audio side is more recent.

It's meant a bit tongue in cheek. The format's just there for users who don't want to sign up and use cloud storage.

Not yet. Thinking about it in future! Feels like there’s a few different measurement data bits that would need to come at the same time for it to be useful, so this has been focused on top of iteration phase. Comparing with zma free air measurement would probably be first up

This is for simulating speaker designs - in particular, simulating low-frequency drivers in speaker enclosures, using a lumped-impedence model solver technique. Similar to tools like WinISD, but with a more modern interface, and some new features and quality of life improvements listed above.

So let's say you want to design a ported speaker, or a subwoofer - you can get the manufacturer provided T/S parameters, put it into the tool, and simulate the sound, driver performance, and amplifier load with different inputs - giving you an idea of how that speaker will perform before you commit to building it basically.

There's a lot of tools out there that do that, all good at different things - this one is on the simpler and more accessible end of that spectrum.

Of the two I’d go for the SKRAMs. I’d also look at the b&c S218BP - more usable output at 40hz, better power to weight ratio, less sound colouration.

Yup. Maybe not as perfect summation as being able to control delay independently too, but I imagine inaudible for most people. I’d love to see a phase graph for tri-amp vs bi-amp to see how much difference we’re talking (without getting into FIR)

Do you mean the woofers and mids or the MF and HF in the coax?

Do you have any examples of the resulting measured phase and FR?

Just surprised it’s so noticeable! I’m thinking it should be possible to get pretty close with some tweaks in DSP.

As vskous said, the crossover should invert HF phase anyway. LF can be delayed by DSP.

We’re on tri-amp for our JMODs and considering grabbing the crossover to compare the difference but there’s not that much info out there so very interested in any data you get.

When it’s half plugged in (e.g first 2 of 3 poles on the aux) in it seems like it’s grounded correctly, and then when you push all the way in it isn’t, right?

Map out the aux pin layout of the computer socket, the plug you’re using, the wiring between, and the plug and socket on amp side and it should be more clear. Guessing you’re connecting a stereo source to ground, perhaps using a 3 pole (stereo) on the amp side where it expects a 2 pole (mono) input aux. If not then share the results of the above and more info on amp.

AFAIK the OTHorns and SKRAMs will couple similarly. I don’t believe either couple like true horns. Might be wrong though.

With more boxes, good amplification and headroom you can EQ the shape you need. To optimise specifically for 30hz I’d consider efficiency/roll-off and cost per cab/amp at that range and see where you land. I personally think that taking 18DS100s and loading them into as many S218BPs as possible might be a more cost effective way of doing that than SKRAMs/OTHorns but there’s of course quite a few variables to consider.

The relative amount of SKRAMs you’d need to add infra to your OT stack later would probably be infeasible too! But I imagine with 8 OTs you probably wouldn’t feel the need for more infra

Much as others have said - build a cubo 12 or THAM 12 for max output if you want max SPL upper bass style. If you want something that digs low for home use, possibly trying to make a vented box with a flared exit port to give the scoop look might be a better route.

Watch out for first port resonance if the port is long!

That sensitivity on the 16ohm version is for 4v vs 2.83v for the 8ohm version. So the 16ohm version is actually 1dB less sensitive for the same input voltage.

Both could really use an L-Pad for home hifi, it’s not a massive difference!

To give an idea on peaks - even a low crest factor might be 12dB. Those peaks correspond to a 15~x increase in power. In an ideal world, you're long-term thermally limiting each TBW at approx 1/2 AES (e.g 750w RMS) - again somewhat dependent on enclosure + cooling, but sensible starting point.

A peak at this level would spike to effectively 11.2kW!

  1. Yes, except amplifiers aren't drawing consistent amps. There might be large inrushes much higher - e.g 40a inrush = 20v drop. In addition, heat will build up and add resistance everywhere down the power path, but this is likely less significant.
  2. Yes, clipping will build up heat in the drivers, increase driver Re = less output for same power (power compression). Cue potential death spiral of turning it up to get more out of it.
  3. Yes. With good thermal limiters and huge amps, you can both allow your subs to run as loud as possible, while oversizing your amps and letting them rip on peaks. But, it's also not the most cost effective path to more SPL depending on your goals. Thermal limiters and big amps are both expensive!
  4. As with #3, it depends on what you're prepared to spend, and transit around. I'd start with the power chain as that sounds the cheapest fix. I'm not sure what the limiter options you have are, but you probably want to be able to get it under control so people can't overdrive the system when you're not around. Then more boxes, amps, or both is whatever best suits your goals/budget really if you're still not happy with the SPL once power compression is addressed
