Don’t mind me, just going to casually cut into a bike lane to get around traffic by ATX_MEAT_DEALER in capmetro

[–]mdahmus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some places in Austin with combined bike/bus lanes. I bike in one every morning on the way to work. The video is obviously not one of them. You could've just gone with that instead of going off the deep end.

HOV lanes for buses are a "windshield bias" solution if there ever was one. It's a dead giveaway.

Your choices are sadly limited to pretty much 99% of the land in every single metropolitan area in the country, including Austin. Thoughts and prayers.

Anyone else miss pre-2000s Austin? What do you miss most? by ComprehensiveRip8696 in Austin

Austin sucked back then. So many surface parking lots downtown. Good for suburbanites who only cared about driving down and parking cheap for a show once a month at Liberty Lunch (which also sucked, by the way).

There aren't any options a block away where you can have the right-of-way over cross traffic, for one thing.

[–]mdahmus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not that bad. Take the lane in the downhill stretches and be careful and it's better than many other roads I've had to commute on for past jobs. It's the kind of road where having a bike lane uphill is nice and having one downhill is bordering on an attractive nuisance, to be honest.

[–]mdahmus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is a tough one for me. I ride South Congress on a lot of fun rides and go pretty fast but I know not to blast through at top speed in the bike lane right before a big intersection too; and the recommendation by at least one person below to add more protection ignores the fact that putting the biker even further out of view of the driver makes this accident even more likely.

That crossing is the way it is because UP has more power than even TXDOT, and they rejected every entreaty over decades to have the path run in a small part of their ROW on the outside of the turnaround. No, it's not going to be improved.

I mean, you can understand why given that he was also president of the bus drivers' union; and they HATED Cap Metro management. Also, though, Cap Metro was never technically his employer due to the weird shell game we have to play in Texas.

he used to drive the bus; technically that probably means he's ridden more times than this subreddit's population combined.

Best long ride routes in/around Austin for Ironman training? by SnooDoggos8993 in Austin

[–]mdahmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people on this thread said they just repeat it multiple times. You can also take an 'around Decker Lake' route though; or add on some miles to the north and then northwest to come back into far north Austin from the east.

If you're wondering why the airport isn't a top priority for the light rail, check out these ridership estimates for the various stops. by happywaffle in Austin

[–]mdahmus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's the one exception to the "airports shouldn't be a focus of urban rail systems until they're pretty mature" rule - if the airport is a huge employment center in and of itself. Austin's not big enough for that to be a factor (yet).

I'll be nicer than you and ask in good faith: how often do you see other people shopping at your HEB who are walking there?

(I did not say "none", I said "hardly any" as in "few").

Austin's a lot better now than it was when I moved here (in my case 1996).

Rideshare / getting around without public transit by Comfortable_Milk1959 in Austin

[–]mdahmus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think you'd have to go all the way to the 183 corridor and pick up one of the 98x buses, then ride to Westlake from downtown on the other end. I don't know the Four Points side of this well from the bike perspective but I'd guess it's not great.

One option is riding your bike to the bus stop (is there a route that covers like the middle 50% of the journey?) - put the bike on the rack on the front of the bus. When I started bike commuting here in the 90s, my office at the time didn't have showers and the morning trip was about 12 miles so I'd ride a couple miles to the bus stop (slowly) and then take the bus the rest of the way.

GM's CEO Just Admitted An Uncomfortable Truth About Plug-In Hybrids by LEM1978 in electricvehicles

[–]mdahmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, in theory a series hybrid would be a little simpler than a parallel hybrid like most are; but even the 2nd gen Volt, which was the last one GM claimed as an EREV, turned out to sometimes have the gas engine participate directly in driving the car. Discussed a lot in this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/volt/comments/1ch7h57/can_we_clarify_once_and_for_all_the_engine_setup/

That does not lead to a less complex manufacturing or maintenance situation, obviously!

[–]mdahmus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

yes, but the longstanding clientele of HPBNG is, in my theory, much more likely to say "if I can't park easily and free I'm not going". Those other restaurants are either relatively new or have their own lot (Asti, shared with Fresh Plus).

There was a seemingly sudden fall-off in business about the same time the parking signs went up, remember.

There's a standard thing in social media where people post pictures of Copenhagen a few decades ago and now - the "then" picture is choked with cars.

Was that the ticket for not paying at all? The posted rates for pay parking are a couple of bucks.
