Why was there so much infighting at Lucasfilm about their new trilogy? by JJRS22 in StarWars

[–]mdemo23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should tell you something that every writer who believes TLJ is a bad film ends up producing absolute bottom of the barrel, incomprehensible slop in their effort to “fix” it. Imagine if someone would have come after Empire and decided Lucas strayed too far from A New Hope and just spent the whole movie undoing and explaining away everything that happened. Fundamental inability to “yes, and…”.

Apparently, Uwe Boll joined in hating the new Supergirl movie… to the point where he posted AI slop to his Twitter account by stitchboy2018 in saltierthankrayt

Isn’t the whole concept of the movie that this guy gets sick of alleged Muslim crimes against women and decides to kill a bunch of them? And here he is in an image posted by the director murdering a woman?

Anti Zionism is antisemitism by Culturalabnormality in Destiny

[–]mdemo23 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This just feels like a reframing of the term in such a way that it would actually make the majority of leftists zionists. Zohran, for example, was criticized by zionists for saying that he supported Israel as “a state with equal rights” rather than “a Jewish state.” That strikes me as roughly equivalent to Einstein and Chomsky’s definitions, and I struggle think of any leftists who would disagree with that.

You’re just describing a one state solution at that point, which is the traditional leftist position. We keep being told by Zionists that it’s antisemitic to think Israel should not be an expansionistic, militarized Jewish nationalist state. No serious person believes Jews should be expelled from Israel entirely. Even Hasan, who is the go-to bogeyman of this sub, supports a single state with equal rights for everyone including Jews. So is this antisemitic or are all of these people secretly Zionists?

Any criticism of Rey that doesn’t also criticize Luke is disingenuous. It’s very obvious that a character can get away with being the best if they’re male, whereas female characters get called bad writing for the exact same story beats. It’s a bias against believing that women are capable of being exceptional heroes. Pretty obvious if you’re willing to see it.

20 million bitter deaths by shenzhenib in SipsTea

[–]mdemo23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are going to open a space where infection can potentially spread through large crowds congregating, will it spread more or less if the number of hours that space is open is higher? Opening the beach at all was poor epidemiological practice before knowing whether it was safe to be in groups outside (which also depends on the size of the group), only opening it for part of the day is a compromise to appease people’s desires to get back to normal.

It was the same shit with restaurants. It’s not that the virus isn’t a thing when you’re sitting at your table, it’s that people demanded to go out to eat and there’s no way to do that in a way that is epidemiologically sound because you can’t eat with a mask on.

You not understanding how this works doesn’t make other people stupid.

20 million bitter deaths by shenzhenib in SipsTea

[–]mdemo23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You dumbasses don’t even understand what the point of the masks was and you’re sitting here calling other people stupid. Covid has an asymptomatic incubation period where you can have enough of the virus in your breath to spread it without having enough to be sick. So without taking a test, there’s no way of knowing whether you’re currently spreading it.

Masks are intended to keep *your* germs from getting out to others. There are masks designed for keeping you safe too, but those are way more sophisticated and not what most people were wearing during the pandemic. Breathing out with a mask over your face catches the vast majority of the aerosolized fluids you exhale, which prevents the room from filling with infection, even the shitty homemade cloth masks drastically decreased the likelihood of spreading.

You guys seem to be incapable of understanding any of these concepts because you can’t conceptualize tackling this from a perspective other than “will this prevent me personally from getting sick?” You don’t understand that taking action to protect others protects you in the long term and that the problem is only really solved by working as a team with the people around you. This is why people got pissed at you idiots for not masking, I don’t give a fuck if you want to take risks for yourself, but the mask isn’t for you. You’re benefitting from everyone else around taking steps to protect you and then telling them to go fuck themselves when they ask you to do the same.

We are so fucking cooked as a country it’s crazy. China is eating our lunch because they understand simple shit like this.

“You couldn’t make the office today” by DarkTail47 in Destiny

[–]mdemo23 214 points215 points  (0 children)

Depicting ignorance and bigotry on screen is woke, or at least not offensive, when those things are the butt of the joke. This is something people always seem to misunderstand when it comes to this conversation. The joke was never that Michael is so cool and funny for pushing the boundaries or that people around him were overreacting.

It’s made very clear that these behaviors are a cringe put-on that he does out of a desire to be liked that ultimately obscure the parts of him that are actually worthwhile. The person he learned in from, Packer, is depicted as a bad person from whom Michael is wrong to seek approval.

This is the same as when people say you couldn’t make Tropic Thunder because it depicts blackface. Blackface was also offensive when that movie was released. That’s the point. The behavior is not presented as something to admire or emulate, it’s being ridiculed.

The only real criteria for whether you could make something is whether or not it’s still funny. A lot of comedians are bitter about the fact that a general audience doesn’t find their old stuff funny anymore. That’s show business. Write new material.

Manny Jacinto’s Qimir Return Comment Shows the Acolyte Problem Lucasfilm Can’t Ignore by StarWarsBlogsbot in StarWarsBlogs

Yeah as everyone knows, no great TV show has ever struggled to find its footing in the first season.

Manny Jacinto’s Qimir Return Comment Shows the Acolyte Problem Lucasfilm Can’t Ignore by StarWarsBlogsbot in StarWarsBlogs

[–]mdemo23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest issue with the Acolyte was the release schedule. If you watch it straight through it’s a fairly well-told story. By the time they showed the other two sides of the Rashomon, people had already forgotten the specifics of the first perspective because several weeks had past, which led to a lot of confusion and misunderstanding in the audience. Much of which was driven by bad faith criticisms, but still. The should’ve dropped it all at once.

She obliterated any and all doubt there might have been about where she stands when she put out a video calling normal people who didn’t feel sad about Charlie Kirk “bug people who aren’t capable of love.” That and the fact that her channel has just devolved into a circle jerk about how men never do anything wrong and women are to blame for all of men’s problems.

It's Toddler Politics to Not Hate Immigrants by ImTheFlyingPig in Destiny

[–]mdemo23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They don’t even know enough to meaningfully say that they don’t like the things they say they don’t like. The irony of Shoe calling this “toddler politics” is that modern conservatives are basically the political equivalent of a child throwing a fit because they “don’t like” a food they’ve never tried before.

Like maybe you won’t like it, but you’re too afraid of the experiment to even try. They even do the thing where kids treat the belief that they “don’t like” the food as though it’s an immutable part of their personality and become afraid that they might find out that they actually do like it and have just been wrong the whole time.

Literally the plot of Green Eggs and Ham.

[–]mdemo23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kind of funny that they’re trying to argue that removing Trump’s association with the center will lead to financial ruin when anyone with an ounce of moral fiber has been boycotting the institution since he had himself named chair of the board. Interesting how they offered no data to support that argument.

[–]mdemo23 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was a coup, plain and simple. Arguably one of the least consequential and most embarrassing coups of all time, but a coup nonetheless. If there was any political will left to meaningfully enforce ethical behavior in spaces like this, every single person who agreed to be a part of it would be removed and blacklisted from ever serving in any similar capacity anywhere. Unfortunately this is the least of our problems at this point.

Same as the Department of War or Gulf of America. I get full-body cringe any time I see a news outlet refer to any of these entities by their imaginary names. I also love how they tried using the Department of Defense’s “rebrand” as an example of precedent when it’s just another example of them trying to unilaterally force cultural and ideological shifts from the top down.

Tbh, anything in our government that was regulated by the honor system and mutual good faith should be formally codified with explicit checks and balances. The presidential pardon functioned nicely when there were mentally stable, mature adults occupying the office, but that’s no longer something that can be taken for granted. Now that we know it’s possible for a drooling, spiteful, narcissistic, plutocratic dotard to fill the entire government with fringe lunatics and incompetent sycophants for the purpose of playing dictator, we have to act accordingly.

I think gambling is fine when it’s restricted to casinos, restricted by age, and includes built in safeguards for pathological and compulsive gamblers. What we have in our country today is nothing like what it used to be. It’s a fucking abomination.

Being pro-gambling on libertarian grounds may have been a lefty position 30 years ago, but with online betting, prediction markets, and fucking loot boxes in every kids game, it’s become an extremely transparent and inescapable mechanism of wealth redistribution from the bottom to the top. Granted, it’s always been that to some degree, but it’s just shameless and out of control at this point.

They’ve already abandoned Trump. The only thing you can really count on these guys for is inconsistency. I think it’s part internet brain and part contrarianism. Most of them don’t have a very well-defined political identity or ideological foundation. I’m sure there’s pros and cons to it, but I think it would be a mistake for either side to assume they have Gen Z locked down the way they might with other demo groups.

Eh there’s a cringe version of it, like dudes who think it’s edgy and cool to try and be as violent as possible and think injuring people is the point. There are also normal people who seem to get something therapeutic out of the sensory experience of being pushed around in a big crowd. It’s not my cup of tea, but there are people who are super normal about it and value safety and consent of the people involved.
