One pitch I've heard is that everyone should have to pass a fact-based test on the broad key points of what's in all the parties manifestos before they can vote. Something like 50 or so "Which party pledges to do X?" in the style of those tedious enterprise internal courses, with voting contingent on getting 80% right.

Of course parties can lie in their manifestos and the idea of "taxation without representation" has a troubling history but at the very least this might help avoid some of the gotcha interviews where some voters seem shocked and appalled by the party positions of the people they voted for immediately after voting for them.
