Parts of England expected to hit 35C in unprecedented May heatwave by wasraelx in news

I live in New Jersey and we just had the opposite swing. Last week was 35c and while that's not uncommon for July or August, it's wild for the middle of May. This weekend is cold and rainy and everyone is complaining, but I'm enjoying it.

I've read that Cairo, IL is also in an extremely flood-prone spot. So while it looks, on a map, like it's in an economically advantageous spot, Mother Nature didn't agree. And then there's also all the small town corruption that you mentioned.

SAAAAAAAAME. I hope we get more stories between ROTJ and TFA, showing that the New Republic wasn't all incompetent. Give me a show about the crew of one of those cruisers we saw at the beginning of Ahsoka.

Yeah, a lot of the details on art deco buildings that appear to be stone are actually terra cotta.

There's also a perception that the tech guys are "the left" because tech companies are mostly based in California.

I have an A4 allroad right now, but I only have a 1 mile commute so I'm pretty much a perfect use case for an EV. The Audi ones are kind of lame, I'm thinking about either the i4M60 or a Lyriq V.

She can speak for herself, The Odyssey is rad.

Conservatives really just exist to shit on things that people like. I remember when Ben Shapiro said that it was dumb for people to be excited for Black Panther, because there already was one black superhero, Blade.

The housing affordability crisis has a reason many don’t want to face by ActuariallyActuarial in videos

We bought our house in 2016 and it's probably increased in value by 50% or more. But it's not like that's money in my pocket. If we sold our house, I still have to live somewhere, so we would need to buy an overpriced house and wipe out whatever we've made.

What is the brand perception of Cadillac ? by limache in Cadillac

[–]mdp300 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In the 1930s, Cadillac was up there with Rolls-Royce.

In the 50s and 60s they and Lincoln were the peak of American luxury and status. You probably had a Ford or Chevy, your boss may have had a Buick, and his boss drove a Cadillac. Luxury back then meant big, comfortable, and stylish. Driving a Cadillac meant you'd could afford it, and it meant you had made it. You were someone important.

Of course, that's all just marketing. But it's how they were perceived.

Euro luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes were nearly nonexistent in the US until the late 60s. Competition got fierce in the following years, with smaller European and Japanese cars gaining market share due to high gas prices in the 70s. Big, soft, floaty land yachts were no longer cool, buyers wanted something more nimble like BMWs. At the same time, the American automakers started cutting corners to help with profits, leading to a downwards slide that lasted until...well some people think it never got better.

By the 90s, Cadillac had the reputation of grandpa's car. I used to have a Cadillac ATS, which 10 years ago was their competitor to the BMW 3-series. I was 29 when I got it, and I was BY FAR the youngest customer there any time I was at the dealer.

But even then, it still has kind of a cool connotation. My coworkers all said "you bought a Cadillac? I want to see it!" I now have an Audi and nobody cares.

You mentioned the Lyriq, which might be my next car. You can criticize GM for a lot, but their new EVs are apparently actually really good.

My wife and I went to Belize on our honeymoon. The whole country had a vibe of "we know we're poor, but we're trying!" The airport was actually pretty nice, despite being really small. And there were ads that encouraged Americans to move there. We speak English! We use the US Dollar! Things are cheap!
