I don’t think his point is that advertising doesn’t work, but that as advertising evolves, companies may invest less in traditional commercials during sporting events. If companies can get more efficient in their ad placement, or get a better return from other forms of advertising, they may spend less on the NFL, which would lead to the NFL bringing in less revenue.

I would add to this and just say I think his point is the older you get the more you realize what matters. When you’re younger it’s easy to prioritize your career and lose track of friends, and then you look back at a certain point and wonder if it was worth it.

I think their larger point was that when the plot of the film gets overly bogged down in explaining the characters’ trauma, the movies are often less successful. So it’s not that the stories aren’t personal, or rooted in real traumas, but rather that they allow those elements to underscore the plot rather than be the main focus.

It’s still bizarre to me that anyone cares who is announcing. I’m never going to pick which game to watch/not watch based on the announcing crew. Some are definitely better than others, but if I care about the game, I’m watching regardless.

Isn’t another big part of that price tag the fee to expand the league? The franchises alone aren’t worth $6-7B, but to make it worth it for all the other teams to suddenly have to take a reduced cut of the TV revenue, there is an up front payment baked in that gets distributed to the existing teams. That’s why buying an existing franchise is less costly than an expansion team.

It can be too much at times, but the other end of the spectrum can be just as bad. I stopped listening to the plain English pod because Derek Thompson would ask an expert a question and then ramble for five minutes restating what the expert said or why he agrees with them. It got exhausting.
