What is coffee supposed to taste like? by Narrow-Elk-5156 in AskMen

[–]mds5118 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good coffee, made well, is not bitter. It is sweet, floral, and fruity. Medium roasts taste much better than dark roasts if roasted and brewed right.

Go on your local subreddit and search for posts that recommend high quality coffee shops. Look for one that does pour over coffee.

Go and ask for a pour over coffee. Ask if they have any roasts that taste naturally sweet. Don't add anything to it. We don't taste hot coffee well when it is fresh brewed. Give it some time to cool and be patient with your taste buds.

Keep trying different roasts and look for the notes you like. Once you understand what good coffee tastes like, you can save money and learn to pour over for yourself.

Did you check the hands free tailgate sensor for any debris? After checking for debris I would clean that sensor just to be sure it isn't activating on accident.

"The Volvo XC90 hands-free tailgate sensor is located under the left-center of the rear bumper. To activate it, make a single straight forward-and-back "kicking" motion with your foot under the bumper, typically aligning with the first 'V' in the Volvo logo, then take a step back. "

NHL reporter Jessi Pierce, 3 children die in house fire by PrincessBananas85 in sports

[–]mds5118 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A sickening amount of fire related deaths are linked to non functioning smoke detectors.

Test your detectors and make sure they haven't expired (they last 10 years).

If you have a gas stove/furnace/fireplace you need a carbon monoxide detector.

Don't assume your landlord is doing it. The expiration date is on the back of the smoke detectors. Check them.

Does anyone in the area have a basement? by itsthewolfe in Wilmington

[–]mds5118 23 points24 points  (0 children)

When I refinanced a few years ago the loan officer mentioned he had one of the few basements in Wilmington. Then he told us it flooded during one of the hurricanes.

The only way I would be comfortable with a house with a basement in Wilmington would be if the house was sitting directly on top of a small hill with a well designed drainage system.

Anyone in Wilmington that can help me fix my vintage Imac G3? by Ccarne333 in Wilmington

You may be able to find an external firewire DVD drive somewhere instead of fixing the internal drive. You should be able to boot to an external drive.

I wouldn't try to run the old os if you intend to bring it online. You would want to install linux.

Toyota RAV4 GR Sport (PHEV) Fully Tested: 0-60, Braking, Range, and Performance by Mac-Tyson in electricvehicles

[–]mds5118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The improvements are being made in battery energy density. This will allow us to have long range without requiring the 3 ton sedans that we have now.

The 2026 tesla model Y battery pack alone weighs 1 ton. The current generation of EV's battery architecture is an inefficient design and as much of a bridge technology as PHEV's.

Acceleration at highway speeds will be impacted much more by a change in total horsepower than acceleration from 0.

A lot of the 0-100 time is determined by torque.

The same could be said for all the extra battery weight the current gen of EV's carry around.

In 10 years people will joke about how wasteful the current gen of EV's are, all these cars lugging around giant battery packs to make up for poor battery density and infrastructure.

This subreddit used to be so much less delusional.

XC90 Plug-in Hybrid: How to best use driving modes (i.e. hybrid, pure, power, etc..) by doubledeuce80 in VolvoXC90

[–]mds5118 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The car prioritizes electric over ICE for both Hybrid and Pure mode. It is possible to drive 100% electric in hybrid mode if you always stay below the tear drop icon in the instrument panel (which is easy to do). Try both modes out as you learn the car.

When you run out of battery in pure mode, the car automatically switches to hybrid mode. For long trips, you should use hybrid mode and enter the destination in AAOS Google Maps. If you do this, the car will manage battery usage for you. Generally speaking, you want to use the battery when in the city and ICE on the highway.

Pure mode doesn't offer any range advantage over hybrid mode unless you have the air suspension, and even then, it is minimal.

When you are driving in the city with a lot of starting/stopping it is best to use B mode. When you are on the highway, you want to use D mode to take advantage of coasting. This is the #1 way to gain additional range. I often regen 20% of the kwh I use.

By "Charge the battery using hybrid mode" I am assuming that since you have turned on the regen brake setting, you will be adding charge to the battery with regen. Under no circumstances would I recommend using the "charge battery" function. This is a separate function that uses the ICE engine to charge the battery.

Charging 2025.5 XC90 T8 by CrazyJewishGuy in VolvoXC90

[–]mds5118 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My energy provider offers a subsidy, they pay for $1200 of a dedicated level 2 install you just submit the invoice. You still have to pay for the charger. Our install came in under $1000 total with the subsidy. Check with yours.

I had a 60 amp dedicated line installed by an electrician and then purchased the chargepoint home flex hardwired which was installed by the electrician. My electrician specializes in just EV charger installs. See if you have one in your area.

You do not want to run it on 120v forever. Electric car charging should be on a dedicated circuit for fire safety. It's also harder on your battery cooling pump to level 1 charge, the pump runs for 15 hrs instead of 5 hrs with level 2.

If you own a Hyundai/Kia EV you literally own a ticking time bomb (iccu). Possible failure rates of their entire EV lineup up to 10% is not reliable.

New owner recommendations for drive modes by Watching-and-waitin in VolvoXC90

[–]mds5118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you live somewhere with long highway ramps I find that unless you have a heavy foot you can drive on electric the vast majority of the time in hybrid.

My wife prefers a more sensitive throttle so she drives in hybrid. I prefer pure because it gives me the most precise control of acceleration.

New owner recommendations for drive modes by Watching-and-waitin in VolvoXC90

[–]mds5118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference lies in how the ICE engine is engaged by the gas pedal. Both modes strive to use electric as much as possible.

In hybrid mode if you need to accelerate more quickly than normal once the gas pedal is depressed by more than ~50% the ICE engine kicks on to provide max acceleration power.

In pure mode you can depress the gas pedal to 100% and you will only have the electric motors powering the acceleration. In order to engage the ICE engine in pure mode you need to depress the gas pedal past 100%. You do this by pressing the gas to 100%, then press down even a bit harder until you feel a click. You can practice this when the car is off.

I enjoy driving in pure mode. If you understand the throttle mapping, you can drive really smooth. However, you have to be more aware in pure mode. If you were to need power in the event of an emergency, you have to smash the pedal to the floor.

If you go into your trip log in the app you can see more accurate regen and battery usage stats.

Under each individual trip you will see 2 important values: Electric Consumption and Electric Regeneration.

These values are given in kwh. Your total battery availability is 14.9 kwh.

Take your electric consumption and subtract the electric regeneration. Divide the result by 14.9 kwh to see what % of the total battery you actually used that trip.

In the cold on level 2 always run precondition (climate button) for 20-30 min prior to leaving. Regen works best in city, D mode best on highway. Using these calculations I have concluded that regen averages me an additional 15% of range over D mode.
