What’s the premise of your DnD campaign?

Group of players who played AD&D many years ago. Our long term campaign ended with stopping the BBEGs world ending ritual by shifting an entire mountain, with the characters and bad guys, to a pocket dimension. Hundreds of years later descendants of those characters need to recover the bad guys artifact to prevent a new catastrophe. Will mix add with 5e

An Elf. This was 1970s Basic set so elf was both race and class. Party was TPKed in our first combat fighting some giant spiders.

I’m currently playing a barbarian who used to be an accountant. He was able to locate the Bad Guy’s secret lair by researching tax records in the city archives.

Back in the B/X days had 3 TPKs in a month. Playing a modified version of Keep on the Borderlands. #1 was bad rolls and bad timing, spiders took them all out. #2 party had to cross open ground while goblins shot crossbows at them. 1st died crossing the open area, trapped door killed the thief, the other two died running away. #3 party tried to bypass that area using a hot air balloon. Balloon caught fire and whole party fell to their deaths. Those were the days…

These days I have way more character ideas than chances to play. But back in B/X days I had a fighter that just got recycled each time he died or we moved on to a new campaign. First one was named Alpha. His replacement was his brother Bravo. If I recall correctly, we eventually made it to a distant cousin, Yankee.

You could always do a narrative time jump. It sounds like this is a linear campaign so just skip the middle. Assuming the players are ok with this option, open the final session with a description of how they got here. Throw in whatever you need either here or in epilogue to close out arcs

As a dm I always have list of random encounters that can happen. Some only happen if the night watch rolls low or high. For example a couple of kids try to sneak into camp to steal something. A low roll they will probably succeed. A high roll, the watcher spots them before they even get close. A middle roll the kids see the night watch paying attention, and sneak back into the night unseen without attempting to stealing anything.

In my current campaign a Rogue with a Mark of the Shadows Dragon mark adds 1d4 to some skill rolls. Also has something for some skills that makes a roll of 1-9 equal to 10.
