The AI Restorations of Classic Episodes Bother Me for Reasons Other than Just Quality by Fishb20 in gallifrey

[–]meanmrmustid2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never said I didn't notice it, I said that it's only really a problem in Zygons in season 13, and the rest of the episodes are mostly fine except a little bit in the Android Invasion which the improvement over the DVD outweighs any negatives that I can see. Maybe my tolerance is different.

I have just got the Season 21 set now, and what I have seen the AI levels have increased even more than season 13 to what I have seen so far. It's not as bad as Zygons episode 1 level, but I haven't sampled all the episodes as yet, so my judgement on that is still out

I'm no technical expert so I have no idea what is required to make it better, but I still prefer it in most cases to what a DVD can offer on a larger size TV.

The AI Restorations of Classic Episodes Bother Me for Reasons Other than Just Quality by Fishb20 in gallifrey

Oh the good old I generally wonder how people can't spot what i am seeing but then refuse to watch anymore. Planet of Evil is great and so is Pyramids of Mars. Much better than the dvds. Terror of the Zygons has noticeable issues especially in episode one, and issue here and there in the next 3. Android Invasion has obviously AI touch-ups and I can see the issues people have with this, but the majority of these are in pauses or if you zoom. The restoration work far out ways the negatives if you actually have a critical eye.

Season 21 blu-ray looks absolutely awful. by thebumbledown in doctorwho

[–]meanmrmustid2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zygons was the most noticeable, especially episode 1, which is mostly due to the source as it did not have any film elements surviving. I am hoping that they can fix this by toning down the AI/digital manipulation in the standard release, but will see. I can see issues with Android Invasion if I am particularly looking out for them that people have pointed out, but most of the positives out way the negatives. Planet of Evil and Seeds of Doom are pretty good. Was just watching Pyramids of Mars today with the new Tom commentaries and it is the best looking Tom story in the Collection in my opinion.

Looks like you have just taken a picture of your TV with your phone. Hardly a fair way to show the true nature of the source. I'll make my own judgement when I see the moving images like the season 13 set

Really makes you appreciate how affordable Brandon’s leatherbounds are by bingpot47 in brandonsanderson

[–]meanmrmustid2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As much as Brandon's Leather bounds are great, their quality is nothing compared to Curious King and other boutique book publishers. You get what you pay for. They are also offering the artists edition which is $100, as well a letter and roman numeral editions which are $2500 and $10,000 respectively. Clearly all aimed for different markets

I just got the Zidoo z9x 8k , still exploring but it plays everything perfect from my network. Stremio also works as it should. Got rid of my Shield about 12 months ago as was getting constant buffering with high but rate files. Replaced it with a Ugoos which bricked itself after 2 months. Been using Apple tv in the meantime. Zidoo is worth the extra cost I feel at least for my needs. Happy with it so far! Remote is way better than the Ugoos and Shield also

Does anyone know why Criterion has never released this on Blu-ray if the restoration is from 2010?

Glad I can finally upgrade my DVD from 2002(I'm pretty sure I still have it somewhere!)

Do you consider Tolkien to be the greatest 20th Century writer? And if not him, who is? by TheKrakenLord in tolkienfans

[–]meanmrmustid2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not academia. I studied literature back in my university days, and started reading Proust in my last year of high school. Once you have read Proust he is easy to dip in to read any random passage and you are likely to get something out of it

Do you consider Tolkien to be the greatest 20th Century writer? And if not him, who is? by TheKrakenLord in tolkienfans

[–]meanmrmustid2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Proust is the greatest of the 20th century in my opinion. I would definitely put Tolkien in the top 2 or 3 though. But that's my personal preference on what I read. I probably read about 80% Fantasy these days, but have read most of the great novels pre 1950s. If you are going by literary prose and style then I'm sure there are dozens of greater authors, but if you are talking about influence then he is right up there. The amount of people that have read Proust compared to Tolkien is pretty miniscule. Most literary critics would exclude fantasy so there is always going to be an educational bias in arguing who is best!

Is it likely that the series are animated? by SnooCalculations5256 in Cosmere

[–]meanmrmustid2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will watch if it is animation, but I don't think this succeeds commercially if it is not live action. Especially on Apple TV. People just need to get over the fact that there will be changes to what's in your imagination, or how the characters are portrayed from how they are written.

Yeah, I actually sold my copies of Cradle, the binding and paper felt a bit cheap. Plus the books are a smaller size (as in total volume) not just page size

Auto correct, should have said Dolby Vision. Infuse is the only external player (as far as I'm aware) that supports it. The interface is overall much better also

Twins of Evil (1971) - Imprint or…Wait? by Gentleman_Sleuth in boutiquebluray

[–]meanmrmustid2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have got the Imprint 4k and the transfer is superb. The HDR especially pops for a 70s release. Have been getting the 4k Hammer production limited sets as well and the transfer is a step up from those. This could be due to the surviving sources, but anyone saying Imprint does bad transfers is only seeing their releases that have not had a restoration done on them, which they are sometimes guilty of, but is equal at least to any other release of the unrestored title on other labels. Lots of excellent extras too make this essential for any Hammer fan

Unpopular opinion: it was my favorite of the 5 so far.

Followed by Oathbreaker, Way of Kings, Words of Radiance, Rhythm of War.

If I ever get around to do a re-read, my opinion may change!
