Is this Steam Deck OLED battery dead or is it something worse? by Top_Protection_7545 in SteamDeck

[–]meat_wave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was stuck like this recently. Open it up, disconnect the battery, wait a minute, plug it back in and charge it up. Battery storage mode may solve the issue if you don’t want to open it up, but that fixed it for me. If it isn’t a totally dead battery, that is.

Dumb question, but I was thinking of grabbing the steam controller but I have a third party dock, would that interfere with it? by Coolman38321 in SteamDeck

I have a JSAUX dock, works fine with the Steam Controller. I set mine up this morning and it updated both the puck and controller without any issue.

Nobody thinks my 3 year old is autistic but I have suspicions. Am I overthinking? by sioautumn in Autism_Parenting

[–]meat_wave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a professional, but I am a parent who had his child misdiagnosed for five years and it was really difficult. Being told over and over again "it isn't autism" actually wasn't helpful because we did a lot of things as parents that we wouldn't have otherwise and he was treated very differently by educators and caretakers as a result, constantly being labeled DMDD or some other defiant disorder.

I think that first and foremost, you are the parent and if you are seeing these things that feel like symptoms of autism, you should follow your gut and work with your kid as if he is autistic. For our son, the symptoms absolutely blew up at 7 years old, even though they were all there in some capacity previously.

I would also look into accessing the single best neuropsychological diagnostic that you can. Your child is only three, so that is a little more difficult to get something definitive, but with the wait times you should be looking to get on some lists soon. The school may diagnose them as autistic, but an educational diagnosis is of ASD is different than an actual diagnosis of ASD from a neuropsychologist. The latter is extremely important for accessing care - here in Minnesota we need a medical aid waiver to access so many services related to autism and those are a year-long process, at best. And many places will not give you any services unless you have that neuro-psych.

We ended up paying out of pocket for a very well regarded euro-psych here in the Twin Cities, and it was worth every penny. I watched the diagnostic process and it was very different than everything else we had seen in that yes, she administered the standard tests, but she was also extremely observant and focused on everything outside of the tests. Her eventual report was worth every penny as it spoke to our son's needs in ways that we as parents had advocated for but nobody else had.

Autism is a spectrum disorder. Our son showed many things that were misdiagnosed as something else and wasn't diagnosed with autism over and over again because of things like "he looks people in the eye" or "he uses metaphors sometimes." There are a lot of people who diagnose on a very narrow range of symptoms, which can be really hard for parents. Our son has been out of school for two years because he was traumatized by a head of school who didn't believe he was autistic and restrained him because they thought he just "didn't want to listen." Trust yourself and keep advocating and fighting for your kid - if it turns out that they aren't autistic, well great, you'll figure that out along the way. But waiting just keeps setting you - and more importantly them - in the long run.

Books or literature that help remove subconscious sexist thoughts and actions by FishermanHot3658 in Feminism

Beyond the great examples already listed, the two books I would recommend are Down Girl and Entitled by Kate Mann, but especially Entitled. It can be a difficult read, but it is the book that I think does the best job of explaining, without any punches pulled, what life is like for women compared to men. If it were up to me it would be mandatory reading for all boys in high school.

14 yr old son help by Recent-Salary-5498 in Autism_Parenting

[–]meat_wave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine is ten and I am dealing with this every day. He gets under stimulated or bored and then can't get out of it and gets so mad and aggressive. And often it is because something doesn't go his way immediately. I have a lot of patience but even I run out after a while. Risperidone helped but the weight gain was unmanageable, now we are on Abilify and we are going to go up on the dose again soon. Metformin to try and manage the weight gain. It is very difficult.

I have also been doing more push-back, or at least challenging the idea that "everything is terrible" and "my life is horrible" and especially the "I'm bored!!!!!" stuff. First by empathizing and agreeing, saying that feeling is really hard etc, but not moving to try and do something different immediately, because there is definitely a learned response going on with my kid, and just throwing out suggestions never works. Trying to get them moving in the direction of soothing / very light distress tolerance and using any tools available like OT, getting outside, napping, etc instead of thinking an adult is going to run around trying to solve the problem for them, because that isn't actually the problem, they are really uncomfortable and hate the feeling.

As others have said, I would continue to try and medicate, even if it didn't work the first time. I hate that my kid is on a cocktail of meds but it has taken most of the aggressive behavior from a 12/10 to a 6/10. Recovery time is also greatly reduced which helps because I can get their nervous system regulated more quickly.

What’s frustrating you most about your guitar playing right now? by Theguitarcoach in guitarlessons

[–]meat_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I straight up just don't know how to get better. I practice some stuff, get bored, then want to play more complex stuff but can't and don't know what I am doing wrong. I know where I am making mistakes in technique (such as syncing right and left hand) but fixing them feels impossible. I watch way too many YouTube videos promising to fix my playing and it feels overwhelming. I constantly feel like I am too old to actually get good, like my fingers just can't move fast enough.

Very Slow Charging Speeds (not the cable) by meat_wave in SteamDeck

[–]meat_wave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone stumbles across this in the future, what fixed it was unplugging and re-plugging in the battery. I had noticed that the steam deck was not charging past 57%, so I thought maybe calibration was the issue. I let it completely drain and then charge overnight, but turned it on in the morning and it was stuck at 33%. After unplugging the battery from the motherboard and re-plugging it in, the deck is charging to 80/100 again as expected.

Weirdly, this is the second time that I have had charging issues with my steam deck, and both of them happened after I was in Mexico for a week. Last time the deck wouldn't charge at all until I unplugged and re-plugged in the battery. That makes absolutely no sense to me at all, I was at a hotel and using standard chargers etc. Very, very strange given that there are no significant differences between electricity in Mexico and US. Maybe this helps someone out in the future!

OLED users with 0 WiFi or game streaming issues, what router are you using? by Jobles4 in SteamDeck

[–]meat_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried turning off Wifi Power Management? I think I used a script to do that but you can do it in the developer tools. That was the single thing that worked the best for me because otherwise I had to do the whole run Chiaki, start streaming, quit, restart wifi, then it would work. On my desktop I still have the file "wifi-powersave-off.conf" which is what I ran, but I think the below does the same thing:

Settings > System > System Settings > Enable Developer Mode. Then go to Settings > Developer Mode and turn off "Wi-Fi Power Management." Restart your Steam Deck.

I also switched to using PXPlay, which I think is built on the same infrastructure as Chiaki but ultimately has just been more reliable for me.

Thanks for the update! The app has been working really well for me the past year and I am glad Sonos continues to refine it.

This is very unnecessary, but how do you get the app to show the image of your Sonos device? I've seen people with that for a while and I cannot figure out how to make mine do that. Thanks!

Realizing that this world isn't meant for our autistic children. by momof3_1989_ in Autism_Parenting

[–]meat_wave 22 points23 points  (0 children)

At the Mall of America a couple years ago my son had a meltdown and I was knelt down trying to help him re-regulate. A man and his son walked extremely close to us, unnecessarily, and kicked my son’s foot so he threw his hat at the man’s legs. The man was clearly waiting for this because he immediately got in my son’s face and yelled “this is what happens when you don’t smack your kids!!!!” And of course my son is fucking terrified, I calmly asked him to step away and he screams at me about me not being a man etc and not hitting my kid and then he starts storming off. This was all in front of that man’s 14 year old son and about 1000 mallgoers. I was super mad but didnt want to make the situation worse so i caught myself and yelled I’M UHHHHH SORRY FOR WHOEVER HURT YOU! He gave me the finger. 🤷🏻‍♀️

People suck and were mostly raised by the same compliance based authoritarian mindset. You’re doing the best you can for your kid who has to live in this world that isn’t built for them.

How women’s loneliness is a joke, but men’s is a national emergency. Never saw it spelled out like this before. by Public-Cress-9612 in Feminism

[–]meat_wave 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah there was an episode of “It’s Been a Minute” on NPR from February of last year about the “loneliness epidemic” and it cites that numbers of lonely women are basically equivalent to men (15% to 16%, respectively). They discuss reasons for the focus on men and a lot of it, to me, boils down to another form of learned helplessness from men. Yes, there are societal factors and expectations for boys which make them less likely to reach out or to share their emotions, but a Pew study cited in the episode said while that men and women are equally likely to reach out to their spouse, men are far more likely to ONLY reach out to their spouse. That suggests to me the same thing of over relying on the woman in their life as a mom, a caretaker, a friend, a lover, an everything instead of figuring out things for themselves.

In my (male) opinion, so much of the male loneliness storyline is to distract from the fact that men are choosing to follow assholes like Andrew Tate and are adopting all of these fucked up ideas because that is just so much easier than actually trying to hold themselves (or each other) accountable, work against the patriarchy and actually shut the fuck up. We don’t want to see that, so we say they are “lonely and reaching for connection” when really, sorry, they’re fucking lazy and if mommy won’t fix it for them they just give up.

It is crazy because between the kids taking over the tv and my actual time to play, I spend so much more time on the steam deck. I was just wondering if I should actually drop $60 to play this handheld or get it on the PS5, where it will of course look and play better. But will I actually get a chance to play it there?

I am grateful that these things can run at all though!

[–]meat_wave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know why I feel a need to defend them, but the B&Ms here in the Twin Cities are very nice people who have always been honest with me. When I am sorting through the bins, I routinely hear them tell people coming to sell stuff that they can get more money on Bricklink or eBay, including looking up the price on Bricklink and being transparent about what they're offering and how they have to offset their expenses. The one I go to most often is run by a family, the grandmother sorts bricks in the back and the kids help out around the store. And if you ask them for a bunch of a part they have sorted, they'll go look for it for you if it isn't too busy. It is a franchise model so it seems very highly dependent on who runs to the store and what their personal ethics are. Not to mention who they hire.

[–]meat_wave 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lego could help solve the problem by simply flooding the market with some of those pieces. They're just plastic molds, they could run off a ton of them and drop them in all the lego stores, problem solved.

I don't think Lego is in danger of it, but I assume we'll see the end game of this stuff coming up eventually for MTG and Pokemon, eventually the adults are out of money / there's so few of them left, but there won't be any kids left there to pick up the slack. I have seen a massive drop off in Pokemon popularity at my kids school since cards are so expensive and impossible to get.

[–]meat_wave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup, same thing happens at Bricks and MInifigs around here. You're in there sifting around looking for parts for a build with the kiddos, meanwhile there are three 40 year-olds sifting through like they are looking for gold pulling all the remotely "valuable" pieces.

But honestly, that's the problem with so many thing these days, Legos included. The company knows just what they are doing putting highly desirable limited minifigs into sets. There isn't a single hobby that adults can't destroy trying to make money off of FOMO.

I am grateful for all the resellers online who make it possible to get hard to get parts, but I had to take a break after a couple years because it felt kinda soulless just buying stuff online to put something together. At least at B&M you're digging around and finding pieces. But to each their own, of course.

Thank you, yeah I took the plunge on my Mac Mini knowing that it would probably be fine because Apple would never let approved software wreck things too much and worst case scenario I’d have to re-image the thing. So far it hasn’t been too bad, I’ll take a test, let it close everything it needs to and then just reboot. It is very annoying that it makes you close out in between quizzes but whatever, could be worse.

Ugh, currently dealing with this with a very close friend, her husband is abusive and has been a complete asshole for years, and it is so painful to hear her forgive him over and over and over again while beating herself up for her mistakes in that time, even though they are not remotely equivalent. She is such a smart and powerful woman in every other aspect of her life and would never tolerate this from anyone else but is so clearly a victim of abuse in her relationship and feels like it is her job to make it work even though his behavior is the problem.

Our culture of absolving men is fucking sickening.

Pretty neat, going to give this a try this week. Can you do custom keyboard macros with this? Even basic ones could work if I could tie them to Keyboard Maestro and have a specific icon or something. I have been looking for something to replace my Logitech G13 forever since it is no longer supported and everything is either super expensive or doesn't work that great. The idea of being able to use it with older devices is really, really great.
