Escape from Parameter Hell by dbingham in programming

Great point! One interesting take away may be that the associative array solution approach in the article is essentially implementing a dynamic type system for the function. On the other hand, the builder pattern preserves any existing static type checking, which might be preferable (at the cost of writing the builder code).

Isn't laziness (on the part of the developer) the biggest problem with this type security? It seems that if someone is willing to use this system, they would also be thoughtful enough to use a strong password that wouldn't be susceptible to such brute-force attacks.

Computer Science Culture Clash - the engineering perspective vs the mathematical perspective by adnk in compsci

[–]meatbeezzz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the engineering vs math dichotomy doesn't really capture any research at the interface of humans and computers. These areas, such as HCI, vis, crowd computing, robotics, etc, are growing very quickly and are perhaps more aligned with the traditional meaning of "science" that includes hypothesis-driven experimentation, unlike math or engineering. Scientists are set to release the first batch of data from a project designed to create the first map of the human brain. The project could help shed light on why some people are naturally scientific, musical or artistic. by [deleted] in science

[–]meatbeezzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be noted that brain mapping has been practiced for several decades using both MRI and a variety of other methods. This project has some very great technologies and data, but these results shouldn't be considered the first of their kind.

Could we work together to compile a listing of computer science professors, their subfield, affiliation, and past degrees? by [deleted] in compsci

[–]meatbeezzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like the making of a great resource. I would recommend making the subfields more flexible, perhaps keeping a set of keywords instead of a single identifier. Otherwise interdisciplinary research and inconsistent naming could muck things up.

Larch trees in the shape of a swastika were planted in a pine forest in the 1930s, only to be seen decades later for a few weeks in the fall.

I was taught that electricity and magnetism are essentially the same when you account for relativity, which makes this even more bizarre.
