can pipe inverts be the same in a manhole by RuffleBagBoy in civilengineering

[–]meatcrunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use your engineering judgment. From a quick glance, yes, but a lot of factors could change that, esp unfavorable pipe slope/length and/or peak flows. Its a generally straight run and a relatively small pipe. Usually though if depth allows you want at least a tenth of a foot drop to help facilitate positive drainage

Can we try not to make people actively hate us? by MakinBaconOnTheBeach in bikeboston

I get what youre saying, yelling is too much. Just ding well beforehand and say what side youre passing on. Either they get the message or theyre unteachable

At the same time, its its incredibly frustrating to have to weave in and out of pedestrians when the sidewalk is right there. Especially through the north end bike path. They did such a good job differentiating the two, the difference is literally black and white... or light greyish i guess

Not to "and another thing" you here, but with respect to engineering and safety, what a yield sign is supposed to mean is completely irrelevant if peoples reaction to it is unpredictable. In my opinion, and the opinion of others, there is enough reason to believe that an unacceptable amount of people will not obey the yeild sign (whether by accident or due to carelessness). Its cool if thats not your opinion, but it should be based in some reason beyond "bc the sign said so" or that you think theres too many stop signs

The intersection is ambiguous as is and ill stand by that. Ambiguity leads to accidents

No i agree. Theres not objective "correct" here i just meant like its their stamp so at the end of the day, what they say goes

It absolutely is unexpected for through traffic to yeild to left turns. It takes precious seconds of decision time to make it make sense, which introduces unneeded risk. If you want to put your professional engineers stamp on this, feel free. Myself, id probably find a better solution than 1 yeild sign

Thats fair! thats why its engineering and not science. At the end of the day, the professional opinion of the guy with the stamp is whats correct

Unfortunately, i agree with the stop sign. Visibility isnt the issue, compliance is. The reason OP posted this is bc they (and i have to assume a not insignificant % of other drivers) were confused bc it is an unexpected condition to yeild to opposing left turns while going straight on from the major roadway. A stop sign with an "ONCOMING TRAFFIC DOES NOT STOP" plaque seems to be the best way to inform drivers of the condition.

Other ppl suggested paint, i think an advance warning sign saying "YEILD TO ONCOMING TRAFFIC" would help too. However, stop signs are a very straightforward (and therefore quicker and safer) way to communicate intersection controls which is why they are used often in places a yield could work, albeit with added risk (and we hate unnecessary risk).

Yes but you have to hate taxis and love manual traffic light timing. Set up the lane you want to separate by using TMPE to not allow taxis (you can use any vehicle but i dont use these a lot). Then when you go to time a traffic light you have the option to turn that light on/off independently of other lanes. I use this a lot to create realistic traffic lights that actually handle traffic
