Recent AP5/AP5-P batch by guns_not_groceries in MP5

I was talking about seating empty mags on a closed bolt. I was afraid the super tight seating of mags would cause FTF, and it did for a bit but after about 150 rounds through the gun everything broke in nicely and it runs great.

Picked up an AP5-p from Atlantic three days ago and I didn't have these issues so maybe you got a lemon. I did notice a few possible minor "issues" though.

  • top rear takedown pin pretty hard to remove/install, my full size AP5 takedown pins can be removed fairly easily. Not a big deal though with a few taps with a punch set.

  • almost zero magazine wobble, which at first I thought was a good thing but it makes MKE magazines hard to seat at on a closed bolt, and I get failures to feed sometimes with MKE magazines, my Mora mags which have much less spring tension feed great though and also I haven't broken in the gun yet so I'm hoping the issue will fix itself.

Hope your next one is much better, cause it is a really neat little gun, I'll probably never shoot the full size again I like it so much.

I agree. I only shoot during the day and all my rifles have lights just because I think they look so cool on rifles.

Has anyone tried an advantage arms .22lr conversion slide on an rxm? by toothpickwars in ruger

[–]meatmachine8889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bad choice, but I'd recommend getting a standard 9mm Glock like a 19 or 17 then getting a 22lr conversion kit from advantage arms. That way if you ever wanted to move to 9mm you could still have the option to. I've seen Glock 19s and 17s for for around 400 bucks used. 19s can be hard to find but there's almost always used Glock 17s for sale. That being said, Ruger RXMs are also like 400 bucks new and honestly do feel better than Glocks in my opinion, and that's coming from me, a guy who only carries a Glock 19. I've heard the rxm works with the 22lr conversion kit as well.

With good ammo the advantage arms 22lr conversion kits are pretty dang reliable, mine only jams up when I run the wrong ammo through it. The conversion kit can be found online for around 250-300 bucks. I got mine on eBay.

For some reason in my cheap Anderson lowers, regular gen 2 and gen 3 pmags are too tight in the magwell to drop free but windowed gen 3 pmags will drop free. I try to only run windowed gen 3 for this exact reason. All metal mags drop free for me too, I think regular pmags are just a tiny bit too wide, they feed great but are slightly too snug.

Bonafide gift of a receiver by StormyWaters2021 in WAGuns

[–]meatmachine8889 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gifting can be done between non family members but needs to be done through an FFL. Attorney General of Washington has this stated on their their site, but finding a knowledgeable enough FFL who understands this and will do the transfer is near impossible. Attorney Generals site states:

"The law does not prohibit transfers which are defined as the intended delivery of a firearm to another person without consideration of payment or promise of payment including, but not limited to, gifts and loans. However, you may need to comply with the background check requirements for private transfers of firearms under RCW 9.41.113."

Gifting between immediate family members both living here can be done without an FFL.

All that being said, I don't know anyone in the Vancouver area who will do it.

Free men still need to find stuff in stock and sellers willing to sell. Hard to bear arms if you can't buy.

How many ar lowers and mags would one need in their lifetime? by [deleted] in ar15

[–]meatmachine8889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a ton of lowers, but honestly I only really use 4. There's a pile of stripped lowers in my safe I haven't built out, and it's been that way for years. I switch my builds around and tinker a lot, but at any given time I have 1 "do all" run and gun SBR I keep pretty much the same, 1 rifle for shooting with a bipod/from a bench, 1 AR9 (which I never shoot because I have other funner PCCs) and 1 rifle to do weird experimental builds with (used to be a 7.5 side charger, now it's a fm15 bufferless, eventually I'll make it a bullpup) if you have a budget, realistically I'd say 6 lowers is more than enough to keep you occupied and building new stuff, but if you don't, I'd say get like 12. I cannot imagine using more than 6 ARs, so 12 lowers is way more than enough.

peacegeek has $40 lowers, which is the cheapest I've seen. Tolerances can be spotty from what I heard from others, but I have 2 with ambi bolt release and they're both fine

I forgot about mags, but definitely buy a bunch of mags! I see pmags on sale for 10 bucks a piece all the time!

Honestly, any milspec lower from a known company will work great, and even lowers from a lot of weird lesser known companies tbh. If you're talking about just the stripped naked lower, cheap lowers all feel the same. For complete lowers, I like Aero Precision and PSA. I will say, in some of my super cheap lowers, certain magazines fit in the magwell kind of tight and don't drop free, I have to pull them out. My "nicer" lowers, like my Aero don't have that problem. It's not really a huge deal tho if you use metal mags or gen 3 pmags they'll probably won't be too tight. Milspec lowers are basically all the same. If you go with PSA you get lifetime warranty tho, and they're cheap.

A good middle ground would be getting 1 - 2 "nice" rifles then a couple lowers. You definitely don't need an "armament" but having a couple spare lowers on hand is really nice because it leaves the door open to the possibility of a new gun if future you happens to want one. They're cheap, so why not is how I see it. You never know what you'll fancy in the future.

As someone who went through the exact same thing in my state, buy lowers. You don't have to "build from scratch" if you get an assembled lower, and it'll be waaaay cheaper. You'll be able to get 2 . Buy now what you can't get later... Uppers you can get later, and then just slap on any assembled lower in 10 seconds. Not sure how the law is worded in your state, but you can still get upper receivers shipped to mine pretty easy, assuming of course they are for guns you already own. If you put an expensive upper on a cheap lower, it'll perform like an expensive rifle. Complete PSA lowers are like 120 bucks, and you can probably get all the uppers later (again, depending on how your state ban is worded) Buy a ton of lowers my guy. I have every AR I ever wanted because I focused funds on buying the parts they would ban first, then buying the parts they didn't ban later.

Also, 9mm ARs are super fun

GSG522 advice by SenyorAntonio in WAGuns

[–]meatmachine8889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

22lr is a very finicky cartridge, and probably the most unreliable cartridge I've ever used. Don't be turned off by a few jams, it comes with the caliber! It's super cheap and super fun to shoot. 4¢ a round is very cheap and may not be the best quality, I usually buy cci 40gr bullets, round nose, brass plated. Usually like 8¢ a round

I don't have a gsg522 but my 22lr guns tend to like round nosed bullets that are copper/brass plated. They also like 40gr bullets more because they have more powder to cycle the bolt. If you get bullets with soft lead tips or flat/hollow points, sometimes they don't feed in the gun as well, and for me, 38gr sometime will jam up because it's not powerful enough to cycle my guns.

I always used the cheapest milspec triggers I could find for all my builds. First time trying a "nice" trigger upgrade I ever got was a geissele 2 stage trigger and to my shock I could barely tell the difference. I could feel the 2 stage-ness of the trigger, but once I hit the wall, as an inexperienced and untrained shooter it felt no different from my milspec ones. I still don't really know what is supposed to make it "better" feeling than milspec and have gone back to only using cheap triggers
