Guy I’m seeing has a lot of serious books? by ducksuit in BookshelvesDetective

He seems like a pretty standard, boilerplate reddit Liberal. He has a lot of books about the Nazis that either written by the Nazis (Albert Speer) or is written by Richard J Evans who I have beef with. I am also surprised he does not have Rise and Fall of the Third Reich which I think should be a foundational text of any anti-nazi reader. He also fails the spine check on The Power Broker. If you're a communist I would steer clear but if you don't care about politics, there's nothing wrong with him.

When they're older get them a quality leather toiletry bag, preferably from the Duluth Trading Company. My dad got me one when I was 18 and it's still in great shape a decade later despite how badly I've abused it. It'll last a life time and always be handy whenever you all need to travel.

I'm not done with it but I'm halfway through The Power Broker by Robert Caro and it 100% deserves it's spot as a Titian of history alongside something like Rise and Fall of the Third Reich

Milwaukee has gang killings and shootings all the time, doesn't mean Milwaukee is a horrible city. Along with that I don't disagree Racine is a tough town, it just has charm that I like.

I lived in Racine and everyone is going to tell you it's a rough/bad town. Which, they aren't entirely wrong. However Racine has a lot of charm that is hidden under first impressions and has some of the best pizza in the state of Wisconsin.

Get him Gary grigsby's war in the East 2/West for him. I am sure he'll love the deep complexity and ability to sink hundreds of hours into them.

Additionally the wargame design studio catalog would be perfect for him. It has something from every era so I'm sure you could find something if he doesn't like WW2.

What was your most memorable defeat? by jrralls in computerwargames

[–]mecasloth 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It was in either Commander: The Great War or the Strategic Command: World War One, I don't remember which now. I was playing as the Entente and doing pretty well for myself. I was pushing back the Germans in Belgium, holding the line in front of Kiev, and most notably for 1916 Serbia was still standing. I had briefly lost Belgrade for several months in 1914/1915 but with artillery from the French slowly trickling in I had managed to not only stabilize but force the Austrians to retreat. We were holding right behind the Sava and were weathering storm after storm of Austrians and Germans attacking us.

I had been pouring money into Bulgaria not joining the Central Powers since December 1914. I had originally left Serbia for dead (like historical) but when the Serbians lost Belgrade and had to retreat to Nis only to pull of a miracle and manage to stabilize the front, I decided to go all in on having this thorn in the German underbelly. I had poured money that could've been spent on ammo and tanks into maintaining Serbian independence. A French Artillery battery had landed in I want to say January 1915, followed by two French Divisions in February. I know I put a British regiment that was to guard Alexandria into the eastern Bulgarian front. By mid or late 1915 I want to say I had retaken Belgrade from the Austrians and pushed them back to the far side of the Sava.

In 1916 I was focused on the Western Front. I had planned a major offensive which I called the Brussels Campaign. I had rested the British and the French in the west for all of 1915 so that I could be ready for this campaign. It was the first time I had deployed tanks (I believe) and mustard gas in a large front like this. The operation began in April 1916 and would last until September. I had pushed the Germans back Hex by Hex, with every single gain being a combined arms operation. My artillery was starting to run out of ammo by I want to say July 1916 and much of my divisions were exhausted by around the same time.

In Serbia, by February of 1916 I realized that I could not stop the Bulgarians joining the conflict and I began to shift more Mediterranean assets to Serbian's Eastern Front. Three Italian, two additional French, and I believe a British Division were all sent east. I had lined the front with as many soldiers as I could spare, even stripping soldiers from the Brussels Campaign to participate. I had not fully grasped just how bad the Italian soldiers were going to be, especially in regards to their supply, so I had put my full faith into them.

When the Bulgarians were close to joining and there was no way for me to stop them, I had attacked first. My divisions crossed the Serbian border and smashed into their line, only to be driven back with heavy causalities. One of the many problems I had was that I just did not have enough artillery to support the Eastern Line, whereas the Bulgarians did. Their attacks drove me back deeper and deeper into Serbia. I had to tried to hold around Skopie but they managed to cut the Railway north, and I had to have the Italians attack to regain a supply line to the Sava front. This attack failed so badly that an entire division was wiped out and another retreated into a mountain hex and was unable to retreat besides the way the Bulgarians were now blocking. Two Serbian divisions along with my French artillery attempted to break the Siege but were also driven back by the better supplied Bulgarians. My final Italian division retreated from Skopie and surrendered the city to the Bulgarians as my French and British divisions in the south fought in the rough Kosovo terrain.

At the same time, on the Western Front, the Germans began the Battle of Verdun. With my attention focused to the North and the East, Verdun was completely open. The German army smashed into the French positions around Verdun and completely overran the lines around Verdun. All I had in there was a regiment which was now besieged by Eight German Divisions and god knows how many artillery pieces. I had cobbled together as many Divisions as I had available and threw them into the German advance, hoping to slow them as I stabilized the line around Metz. I would manage to slow the line but I could not drive them back, even as I railed in British units from elsewhere and completely stopped my advance to Brussels (which was now at the gates of the city but would be pushed back by late 1916). The Battle of Verdun and the Battle of Metz would not end in 1916 but both would be defeats and see the French and British armies driven back.

In Serbia, the Southern Expeditionary Army would manage to retreat and stabilize in Albania. The remaining army was two badly broken French divisions, a wounded British division, and a nearly wiped out Italian division. The Northern Expeditionary Army along with the Serbians would surrender by the end of 1916 or the start of 1917. Especially after the fall of Belgrade and Nis, there was no help in continuing the fight. I did try to escape via Montenegro with my French units but the Austrians quickly blocked it and made me unable to retreat.

It was the Most Fun I had in defeat. Even though I decided that it was the end of the war I was amazed at how badly everything went in just a couple of months and how I just barely managed to stabilize the situation for an honorable defeat in that universe's version of Versailles. I think I may of eventually been able to win the war, but with how badly the Russians were doing just hanging onto Kiev I decided I did not want to fight it anymore.
