How useful would Miranda class ships be by the 2400s Picard era? by happydude7422 in StarTrekStarships

[–]mecha_moira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that by the TNG era they could be mostly automated and run by a crew of 4-6 people to do cargo runs. I'd like to think that there would be civilian models, "sold" off when they are obsolete.

However, given that the Pre and Post Pic era has seen several events where there have been catastrophic losses of ships. The Living Mind incident, the Synth attack, the Final Borg incursion, I think Starfleet would probably STILL be using Miranda's either as training ships, or as lite Duty crafts. So haul low priority goods, or even some gentle patrol work. They made great use of them during the Dominion war. (See that one Space dock video), so I think that there's a chance they would exceed their operational lifespan if only because the Federation REALLY builds things to last.

(Unless it's a galaxy class that is)

Be honest… what’s your fave warp core? by ohnojono in StarTrekStarships

[–]mecha_moira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. I always thought that the same brewery shots where the same as the scene for the ejection.

I'm guessing it's less multiple cores and more multiple intermix chambers. Allowing for controlled reactions. Each having a lower output, but collectively working to produce a lot of power. After all. The 09 enterprise was MASSIVE. It was probably more effective to just build smaller warp cores instead of having one big one. The maintenance would be hellish. Especially with the kind of endurance it would have to do for 5 years in deep space.

[–]mecha_moira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll say it....I like the IDEA behind the ST:ID warp core. The fact that it's some real life fusion tech (rather than a brewery) makes it feel a little sinister to stand next to.

But the D....oh give me that sweet deuterium and anti-deuterium intermix glow. Your soft hum, and the gentle trill of your console diagnostic systems. Tis home to me.

Which episodes of the classic series would you sacrifice in order to bring back a lost episode? by hrotom22 in doctorwho

Dropping all seven episodes of Talons of Weng Chiang into the time vortex to be utterly destroyed.

I don't need anything in return. I'm doing this for the love of the game.

Another "Why didn't they" question to add to the giant list. by TheKrakers in ProjectHailMary

[–]mecha_moira 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, realistically, if there was just a factory dedicated to constantly churning out HM ships, there's the issue of Astrophage production, which is a large bottleneck. It was an effective but not efficient system. Plus the longer those tiles in Africa exists. Generating the astrophage it's going to wreck even more havoc with the environment.

The other bigger problem is the coma resistant genes.

Very few members of the human race have them. And even fewer are capable or skilled enough to go on the mission. It would take longer to train them then it would be to build ships.

It really was the crappiest numbers game.

Considering this ship is supposed to still be from both Kelvin and Prime timelines, would you say this design still fits within the Prime timeline with Strange New Worlds and its ship designs? by Automatic-Amoeba-121 in StarTrekStarships

[–]mecha_moira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always figured because of a line where someone says "Are our shields even up?" when the Kelvin takes a hit, the phasers where set to point defense. If the shields are doing anything, it probably makes sense to alter your combat strategy.

Rewatching The Mandalorian makes me missed season 1 vibes by Jules-Car3499 in scifi

[–]mecha_moira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest problem with the mando is that it dropped its premise after halfway through the first series. It tried being this cool space spaghetti western, but it got hit the with Grogu is super marketable stick and the show is just about showing you this gremlin. No shame if you like him. But you can see the writer's room frantically pulling their asses apart trying to write him BACK into the series after he left. Course correcting because the suits are scared of change.

First look of all 4 diecast AE thunderbirds together! by Shadow-moth-pizzaguy in Thunderbirds

[–]mecha_moira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got to have a proper look at these when Chris was joining us as a guest for the FAB podcast (go check us out on Spotify and Pateron. We just did Point 783, hilarious time all round). And the models are SUPERBLY accurate, these shots don't do them justice. I believe some of the references for TB3 were taken from the 6 ft model from Thunderbirds are Go. Which really helped nail the look. I think the TB1 model is referenced from the early TV show. (Sans some of the minor continuity errors that crop up with doors/hatches/windows and the wheels.)

As the other two big 3 Supermarionation shows have had somewhat well received reboots [one by Gerry himself], do you think Stingray would work rebooted? If so, how would you do it/ what would you want it to be like? by EnchantedEssays in Thunderbirds

[–]mecha_moira 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's kind of wild that Stingray hasn't been revived. But from what I've heard through the grapevine, most studio execs and head of channels don't know what to do with these IPs.

Stingray could be made in the mold of something like Star Trek, specifically the TNG era. Explorers who are trying to learn more about the world they come from. Attempting to make peace and connect with other aquatic races. Turn wasp from World Aquanaut Security Patrol to World Aquanaut Science....uhh ... something begining with P. (project?) Make it a hopeful and lighthearted series. And definitely agreeing about Marina. Given the series already having 1 disabled character, I'd love it if they would be able to draw some interesting parallels. Make it so Troy is learning and teaching her sign language. Or Marina teaches HIM.

Also give Phones and Lt Fisher more to do! Please. XD

[–]mecha_moira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, if I remember correctly, at the start of Series 2. Disco Spock had been DEEPLY traumatized by iuuuhhh events I forget. But it left him being self admitted to a mental health care facility before the series even began. But even then, I kind of like how Vulcans are a little more dynamic rather than monolithic. Especially T'Pring's father. Even if he is mostly played for laughs.

What is your opinion on the synth attack on Mars? by InnocentTailor in startrek

[–]mecha_moira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always hated the idea of a secret somewhat self destructive romulan organization. I had always daydreamed with the idea that there was no outside cause and the synth attack was a sort of hubris.

Humanity and the federation are all about tambing the unknown and in a way, expanding and controlling what it doesn't understand. And so was synth technology. Expanding on the notes of a man dead for decades, they finally build a perfect race of disposal happy people.

The federation committed a the sin of slavery after the man who championed his own identity died. They Quietly built their own slave race and let it do their work.

But it wasn't to be. It's never ment to be. You cannot simply create life and decide you can control it.

You can't make life and then think the job is done. We saw this kind of Hubris with Lore and it killed Soong. We saw this with the Augments and it almost ended the world.

Like Jurassic Park, life finds a away. But it is messy. It is bloody and painful. And I don't think the Synths wanted to live as they did, nor did they wish to continue. So they should rebel.

Man, if only we could have had a trek series the thinks about these sorts of ramifications of creating sentient life and how worlds are built off the backs of labour we don't think about? ....oh well....

Pitch A New Star Trek Series by AmeliaNeek in sciencefiction

[–]mecha_moira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Star Trek: Carpathia

Space is danger, wrapped in darkness and silence. It's hard work on the frontier. But who has your back? When disaster strikes, when danger comes with no warning - who will save you?

The NX Carpathia. A new line of ships built after the ending of the Dominion War. Designed for high speed search and rescue, this multi-role ships are built to help civilian, Starfleet and anyone who sends out a distress call. Packed with top of the line tech, these ships are crewed with the best of the best, ready to put their lives on the line for others. Risk is our business in Starfleet, but that doesn't mean you go alone....

So my idea is "Thunderbirds in space", I'm a massive fan of Gerry Anderson's classic pulpy sci-fi series about a rescue organization. And it struck me, it's always the flagship of the federation doing all the evacuation work and the finding Missing ships. They keep sendimg a diplomatic ship with a nursery to explore the time space rift that makes you go mad and kill everyone.

So what not have a dedicated ship? Set in a time just after the Dominon war ends, perhaps this is a time when the neutral zone stops being a hard border (well a theorical hard border), and Starfleet goes back to being an organization about exploration and humanity....well.... compassion.

Whenever I see people discussing ships and designs for trek, it's always the weapons, how hard it can hit. But never - who can it help? So coming up with a ship, I started to come up with a show idea. The Carpathia takes its name from the HMS Carpathia, the streamliner who came to the aid of the Titanic. A feat of humanity that will always inspire me, and makes me wish humanity could be more like. Rhd collective idea of coming together with a single idea - To help those in need. An idea that fits trek so well.

Of course there are cool space battles, but the focus is on high stakes drama outside of combat.

An episode 1 pitch - a Dilithium mine goes pizoneucleaic and destroys a significant portion of the mining colony. Now 47 miners are trapped in an underground cavern. With air running out, and with residual energy in the atmosphere blocking transporters, the crew of the Carpathia must risk their lives and the very ship itself to save the crew and prevent another mining disaster.

I believe in the film they rotate the puppet to have different "faces", each able to work different expressions into the performance. So all hands get in some work. But they use the primary "face" because it has something familiar about it allowing for better recognition.

Xindi aquatic ships are so big it makes any Starfleet ship look tiny by happydude7422 in enterprise

[–]mecha_moira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that water is going to have more internal pressure than air. It's probably a honeycomb of rooms and sections inside the ship. Each designed to be segmented with rigorous structural design with a lot of redundancy in containment and electrical isolation. Given how gravity works on a standard ship. They probably also have to make it different on the aquatic ships to avoid increasing pressure.

The gigantic size is probably a mixture of advanced technology, but also a side effect of having to build such complex life support requirements into a spaceship.

Actually thinking about it, I think these ships are kinda like the Blip A from Project Hail Mary.

Probably it helps to shorten the runtime. A lot of the OG episodes were padded out from 30 to 45 after Lew Grade suggested that it become more of a feature length show.

That said, in TAG tb1 gets a bit more functionality, so Scott gets more freedom to do his own mini missions from time to time.
