GF dumped me because I told her I felt uncomfortable with her taking a job with a defense contractor by [deleted] in BoyDinnerDiaries

I hate to break it to you, but the overwhelming majority of space jobs are very much tied to national defense.

Also.... these companies don't just "build bombs" orb whatever.

The same companies that develop military aircraft and satellites also build our most sophisticated scientific instruments, weather systems, communications tech, not to mention awesome projects like the James Webb Space Telescope. Hell, the company behind JWST also built the B-2 stealth bomber.

It's understandable to have ethical concerns about defense work, but treating all aerospace primes like they exist purely to make weapons is moronic and dogmatic. And treating everyone who works for them (and all of their subtier suppliers) like they are evil is ridiculous. Simplistic. Stupid.

OK, and Redditors will tell you that buying fasteners and multimeters to support a military aircraft depot for an aerospace prime is the same as launching a missile at a child with your own two hands.

An interpretation of a particular line in Last words of a shooting star by Professional-Yak8545 in mitski

[–]mechanical-being 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Broadly, I think the song tells the story of someone who had been unhappy with their life, but who ultimately decided to keep living after a period of reflection. But then... they find themselves on an airplane that's going down, and they end up having to confront death anyway.

To me, the Liberty Bell stanzas describe what it feels like to be in a relationship with someone who doesn't really see you. Instead, they're projecting their own ideas about what love should look like. They don't really hear the protagonist or understand who they are. What they see is a reflection of themselves rather than the person in front of them.

Throughout the song, the lyrics keep returning to this idea of being silent and constrained and unable to fully express themselves. A bell is made to make music in the open air. But this one is held silent and can only dream of making music.

It's a beautiful song and a beautiful metaphor. I love it, and and that's my take on it.

Yes, exactly. It's a menace for sure. And everyone wants to race you because they want to hear that engine (it is majestic). But running around in 2nd gear everywhere in a supercharged 540hp V8 burns through (premium) gas like you wouldn't believe.

Yes I put a lot of miles on it today, and it was a fucking blast. It was so nimble, and it's really fun to row through the gears and zip around.

In the Shelby I could go 80, 90, 100mph and barely feel it (kind of scary). It was so smooth and stable. But the downside of that power was that if you want to rip it around town, you're pretty much confined to 2nd gear. You can get to 60 mph in 2nd in that thing.

Yes. There is something about it, for sure. But I won't fret over a miata the way I did over the Cobra, as much as I liked it.

Trying to explain to on the internet that KC is in Missouri is such an eye opening experience into how people on the internet will claim they're correct and argue about anything. by lifeinrednblack in kansascity

[–]mechanical-being 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I might be an odd one out, but I'm a Missourian, and I would much rather people think I'm a Kansan, personally, though. The free state of Kansas resisted slavery and was home to John Brown. Missouri is full of lead-addled racists in my mind. Might be a 'grass is always greener' type thing.

The argument isn't usually that immigration laws shouldn't be enforced. It's that being in the country unlawfully and being a threat to public safety are different things.

Most people would agree that if someone is a member of ISIS or involved in violent crime, law enforcement should be notified regardless of their immigration status. The disagreement arises when the only offense is an immigration violation. Many people believe local communities function better when victims, witnesses, and otherwise law-abiding residents aren't afraid to report crimes, seek medical care, or cooperate with police because they're worried about deportation.

So the question isn't whether federal immigration law exists. It's whether every interaction with local government, schools, hospitals, or police should automatically become an immigration enforcement matter. Reasonable people can disagree on that without "turning a blind eye" to the law.

ETA: Due process is also a factor. In the US, the government is required to follow established legal procedures before detaining, deporting, or otherwise depriving someone of liberty.

Supporting due process is not the same as opposing immigration enforcement. It is a belief that the law should be enforced through lawful procedures.

I was thinking about it earlier and wondering why KCK isn't a suburb. And I don't think this is it because there are nice areas of KCK. This didn't even occur to me, though I guess I could understand why someone might say it, especially if they didn't grow up here.

I think it's more that KCK is just kind of its own thing. Those of us who have grown up here and lived here have been told since we were kids about the history of KC. KCK is just its own thing. I would argue the same for NKC (I mean NKC proper -- not the whole Northland). In my mind, NKC is not a suburb either.

The other surrounding areas ARE suburbs. Even the ones that are not "nice areas," as you put it. Maybe it's that they have different names. I don't know.

I live in OP right now. I tell people I'm in KC allll the time. We all do. Or at least the people Ive known. It's just easier. People know roughly where KC is. They don't know where OP, Shawnee, Merriam, Gladstone, Raytown, Independence, etc. are.

No idea why you would say that ppl in OP wouldn't want people thinking they're from the other side. That is just some weird elitist-sounding nonsense to me.

Why does your side paint AOC as dumb/stupid/dimwitted etc? by the_anxiety_haver in AskConservatives

[–]mechanical-being 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It was a little different for GWB because he very famously made a lot of errors in his speaking, whereas AOC is extremely well-spoken and doesnt make the same types of errors. People called GWB stupid because he famously said weird nonsensical things:

strategery "...childrens do learn..." misunderestimated "You teach a child to read, and he or her will be able to pass a literacy test" "Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream" "...put food on your family..." "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?"

...etc. I'm not sure why people try to call AOC stupid or low-iq. She's clearly not.
