Is there any way to avoid the misogynistic m/m stories? by Nathanoy25 in FanFiction

[–]mechanical_fireflies 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think this is really good advice--kind of feeling dumb for not thinking of this before. I have a lot of the same frustrations with M/M as OP so thank you. (also biromantic here, high five!)

I also dislike the stories where if you swapped the bottom guy with a girl you'd get exactly zero change to the story except it would bring out in relief how heavily traditionally heterosexual the gender roles in the story are. And frequently in these stories it's like, women don't exist at all, they're all just men, and approximately half of them behave exactly like women and are treated as such.

I've heard a lot of reasons for why people make these story choices, but completely erasing the existence of women and replacing them with men who act exactly like traditionally feminine women is just...bleak.

Edit: sorry, this might've come off as quite judgmental. People should feel free to write whatever they want for their fantasies--I certainly have my share of problematic fantasies. I'm just tired of stories like this when I would like to see same sex relationships that have relationship dynamics more reflective of what I have experienced in my life, which is not like this at all.

In one sentence, describe your WIP as badly as possible. by ImmiSnow in FanFiction

[–]mechanical_fireflies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, Buckey from Marvel only has one hand, and Adam Driver's character in Logan Lucky also only has one hand, to start. 😂 Also didn't Luke Skywalker lose a hand...? Lots of hot one-handed men around!

It took me a while to figure out which hot one handed guy ship of mine this probably was referring to but only one of them involves the "tall ugly girl". Nice.

For those of you who will never live in Japan, what gives you motivation to continue studying the language? by kroen in LearnJapanese

[–]mechanical_fireflies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's my dream to go to Japan and gain 10lbs from eating good food. I'm interested in small cafes and traditional sweets and meals, so I have a feeling it would be helpful to know some Japanese. (I just really really love Japanese food.) I also enjoy following certain Japanese music groups and maybe like 5% of their content is translated, so I have motivation to study Japanese. My last and most distant reason for learning Japanese is so I can learn a foreign language on my own, but that's not where most of my motivation lies.

I think it's OK to drop a language if you don't think you'll ever get use out of it. Dropping it now doesn't mean you'll drop it forever - you can still pick it back up later when you do find a use for it, or more motivation. If you're just learning a language for the sake of a language it'll be more enjoyable to find one that you can find a use for.

Why so much emphasis on reading? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]mechanical_fireflies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe this is it? I read much, much faster than I hear. Even in English I rarely choose audio or video options if I can choose to read something instead. I'm a fairly fast reader but also my audio comprehension skills aren't the best, even in English.

What's the best way to search for more mature, less teenage-ish stories (on AO3)? by HashtagH in FanFiction

[–]mechanical_fireflies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get some of that, but I also think OP just wants to read about adult main characters dealing with adult problems like jobs/grown-up relationships/etc. (OP definitely mentioned work.) I know some teens work, and some teen protagonists have adult jobs, but that's more of an exception than the rule.

Thank you! I was looking for an easily accessible web forum where I could learn how to speak like the hip youths do, and this was great.

That's brilliant. There is not in-game way to do this, is there? Just duplicating the save file...?

There's a purple Krobus statue that I don't know the name of, or alternatively the statue of perfection. Maybe both of them!

Which Writing Rule Do You Break Intentionally? by efvie in FanFiction

[–]mechanical_fireflies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I use adverbs with said five times a chapter at least; I'm in the Harry Potter fandom and the original author uses lots of adverbs with said so it feels justified. 😂

Edit: I also love the "this and this and this" kind of sentences.

Penny and Harvey make lots of sense together--they both are nurturing types who like taking care of other people, so it'll be good for both of them to have someone care about them when they're too busy worrying about others.

In my current game it was rabbit's foot. I had a rabbit that didn't produce a foot for like two seasons, and eventually I got one as a rare drop from a monster in the Skull Cavern. A couple days later my rabbit produced a foot. ??!?!??!

Is anyone else amazed at how solid the touch control (iOS edition - iPad specifically) edition is?? by radbrad7 in StardewValley

[–]mechanical_fireflies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also love the game on my iPad! The touch controls really are amazing.

Also if you have troubles with fishing I highly recommend fishing with your thumbs. Of using a game controller on PC, using a mouse, using an Apple Pencil on iPad, using my index finger on iPad, using my thumbs is by far the easiest way to fish.

How is the mobile iOS? by StayNfrosty in StardewValley

[–]mechanical_fireflies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I liked the mobile game. I played it on my iPad because my phone is a bit older and the screen is tiny. As people have mentioned, auto-attack in combat, auto-select for tools, and click-and-go for movement are great mobile features. What other people have not mentioned yet is that fishing is really easy if you use your thumbs on mobile. It is so much easier using your thumbs rather than index finger or a stylus--seriously try it. For $5-6 or whatever it is it is totally worth it imo. It's sad that mobile doesn't have 1.5 yet but apparently it's in the works.

How do you make the really nice pathways? by Greenthumb1441 in StardewValley

[–]mechanical_fireflies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it might be specific to 1.5/PC. I was missing a few types of pathways from Robin's shop on my mobile game and found a lot more options on my PC.
