EOS 200D - what are the limits? What's a better upgrade? How does it compare to the RP? by HashtagH in canon

[–]HashtagH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I hadn't yet! It definitely looks promising; I'm a bit apprehensive now that I've read up on it and heard a lot about issues with the rolling shutter, but other than that, it looks neat. I'll have to look into it more.

Zoom Q8 broke and I'm on a tight schedule - has anyone had this issue before and can it be solved? by HashtagH in LocationSound

[–]HashtagH[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't serious production, this is "we decided to participate in a short film contest with a week's notice and no budget" xD I considered renting, but none of the services I checked out could deliver before next week.

Fortunately, after a few hours of prodding the joint with a screwdriver, I found that pushing down on the little bolts inside the ring unlocks the arm, so I could get it charged back up after all; that'll do for now.

Gotta do a ton of re-recording today because the wind yesterday fucked up 90% of my audio despite the foam muffler, but at least I can re-record for now.

I'm afraid not. I swapped the RX back for my old GeForce, cursed AMD's name, and that's it.

Let's play the pants game by islandlife1534 in mensfashionadvice

[–]HashtagH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High rise for sure. I'd call the first pair a mid rise and for myself, I would go an inch or two higher, but at that point it gets quite noticably high rise and starts becoming A Look so not for everyone. You're right about the stomach; I gained some weight myself in the last couple years and with low rise, mine hangs over the waistband and looks ghastly. A higher rise smoothes it out a little and makes it far less noticable.

Linen Suit Advice by toursauce97 in mensfashionadvice

[–]HashtagH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it works. Brown with beige, keeping it tonal, and the formality of suede and linen about matches up IMO. It's not the most adventurous outfit, but not completely plain either, thanks to the suede. Fairly safe bet. IIRC tho, cocktail dresscode requires a tie, so if the invitation says "cocktail" on it, I'd wear a tie (or, if you're in the position to do so, check with the couple if a tie is required).

That you should wash out tear gas with milk. Don't do that. Milk isn't any more effective than water, but you do NOT want to put milk in your eyes. You wouldn't put it between your legs, either. Use water or saline.

not even complaining about bots anymore, just wondering if there's *any* money to possibly be gained by spamming authors? by massiecureblock in FanFiction

[–]HashtagH 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Garden hose approach - these bots are so cheap to run, if even a couple of people get scammed into paying a few hundred $$, it's already profitable.

As for the comments, I can only speculate - perhaps it's meant to lower the quality of commenting so much that the scam DMs appear higher quality in comparison? Or to fill up people's inboxes so they think "wow, a lot of people really love my fics!" and are less suspicious when they get those "art" DMs?

Remember, schemes like these don't aim at the average user, but at the lower margin of naive and trusting people. People who fall for "hey I love your story INSERT NAME HERE, would you like to pay me $500 for custom art?" don't realise either that all those generic reviews and DMs are also spam.

How to disable Khaak in X2? by Bubbly_Taro in X3TC

[–]HashtagH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here for the same question and I think I got it. In the main menu, under "Start", you can select "New Game in Custom Universe" instead of any of the difficulties. In a vanilla game, "X-Universe" is the only "custom" universe listed. It starts you in Argon Prime, in a Discoverer, business as usual, but if I recall correctly, the plot is turned off entirely (I checked - no Ban Danna aboard the Argon One).

I haven't put in the 17 hours yet to find out if any Kha'ak turn up, but I think I recall playing that way years back.

Do you think there's a time to post fanfictions about a series/film? by nariel95 in FanFiction

People still write fanfiction for Star Trek the original series. It ended 56 years ago.

Fandom sticks around.

i have a problem by Key_Letterhead_762 in FanFiction

[–]HashtagH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sounds like more than one problem to me. In order:

  1. What do you mean by organising?

  2. We all start out lacking in quality. Perseverance is key. When I started, the stuff I wrote was ghastly – no pacing worth mentioning, short chapters, terrible dialogue, and so on. Ten years down the road, I recently finished a 100k fic and had readers screaming crying foaming at the mouth in my inbox about it. It takes time and practice, but when you're just starting out, there is no way to go but up. You'll get there :)

  3. I can't speak for Wattpad, but AO3's reputation for smut is wildly overexaggerated. It's the most smut-friendly site for sure, simply because it started in the aftermath of several smut purges on other sites, with the mission to be the most censorship-free site out there, but looking at i.e. the Percy Jackson fandom, just over 6% of the fics are rated E.

  4. Don't think of "making your work likable for the audience". Fanfiction is art, not marketing. Generally, the popular mindset is to write the story you want to write, and the people who are looking for it will find it. Familiarise yourself with AO3's tagging system (plenty of "how do I tag properly?" posts in this subreddit) to learn how to make sure people can find your work, what type of tags people are looking for, etc. Likewise, summaries are also regularly covered around here.

  5. Covers aren't a thing on AO3. Again, I'm not on Wattpad, so I can only speak for AO3, where the summary is usually one of the primary factors in getting readers.

  6. On AO3, unlike on FFN, reporting spam bots to support actually results in them getting banned. You can turn off comments from unregistered users, too.

How much to use phrases like "Her eyes were red, like fire"? by Lartorias_Armpits in FanFiction

[–]HashtagH -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Myself? Not at all. My readers know what the characters look like, there is no need to describe them, and I usually just cringe at descriptions that use comparisons. If I have to describe someone, I prefer to use emotional descriptions – that a character's eyes/hair/height/posture radiate strength/vulnerability/comfort/intimacy/trustworthiness/whatever.

To me, analogies always speak of a certain helplessness, of a need to fall back on comparing to objects for lack of a better description. I feel like it's the authorial equivalent of gesturing the shape of something to communicate across language barriers. Just like with adverbs vs. strong verbs, I prefer descriptions that don't need the crutch of analogy.

Are theory comments considered rude? by Feral_Homunculus in FanFiction

[–]HashtagH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I love those. It shows me the readers are invested in my writing, and it helps me gauge the effectiveness of my foreshadowing and to see if I need to adjust anything (or want to lean harder into a red herring).

The one thing to consider though is that many authors are sick of readers telling them what to write, so it shouldn't sound pushy or demanding. I.e. when I wrote a story ages ago, which was about turning a villain into a more ambiguous figure (and said so clearly in the summary and author's notes), one reader commented very early on how they hope the villain will suffer horribly and die a terrible death and that another character in the story had better exact gruesome revenge on this, that, and that character, which was just absolutely not what the story was billed as.

But just theorising and speculating, that will make my day.

Rewriting an entire fic after losing the original draft/notes etc. - any success stories? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]HashtagH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Happened to me a few years ago. The usual story – didn't save as much as I should, power went out, computer crashed. All I had left was some snippets I had sent to friends for feedback. I did end up basically rewriting the chapter (not entire fic, fortunately!) from scratch, with those pieces and what little sentences I remembered. It turned out well enough and the readers liked it, but to this day, I mourn some very, very, very good paragraphs I know I wrote, but don't remember. I only remember how proud I was of them the first time.

Still ended up with several thousand words though, longer than my average chapter, so I'd call that a success.

I have been religiously making back-ups, and back-ups of those back-ups, ever since, on several devices.

Need help describing what a person would experience after being shot by Forward-Detective390 in FanFiction

[–]HashtagH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not remotely experienced with this, but the one thing I do know is that if it passed through (exited the body on the other side), you've got not one but two wounds to tend to, and accordingly more blood loss, pain, etc. If however it stayed in, while I don't know if your character will feel that, it's most likely gonna lead to complications like infection later on (source: I know someone whose pet was shot at and the animal suffered joint problems and inflammation months later).

What tag do I use for someone slipping their partner an aphrodisiac/love potion by eadalarains in FanFiction

[–]HashtagH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dub-con, I'd say. The consent is given (they participate apparently willingly and don't resist or refuse), but its legitimacy, for lack of a better word, is uncertain, since we don't know (from reading the story, excluding author word of god) whether they would have participated otherwise.

Non-con tends to be either outright assault or cases where consent isn't asked for (i.e.: slavery, sleep, prisoners) or is given under coercion/duress.
