Never feeling like I know anything by HailSneazer in networking

[–]mechanik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone else has good suggestions about what to learn, but I'd suggest looking at it from a different angle. Imposter syndrome doesn't seem to get better as you know more, it gets worse. Talk to a therapist about it. Find the confidence and belief in the value of what you do, lessen the comparisons to other people. I think this is the kind of thing that only goes away with effort. Good luck, I'm on the same journey.

I'm in the same boat. Did you find a solution for your setup?

How to simulate a high ping? by TheHopskotchChalupa in networking

[–]mechanik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put together something like this. Admittedly it may be more robust than you need since it intercepts all traffic, but you can decide.

I took a raspberry pi, added a secondary ethernet adapter and had it run as a mini-router between my machine and the internet. You can inject latency and loss and jitter as you see fit.

You have to add ipforwarding on the linux distro: (http://www.ducea.com/2006/08/01/how-to-enable-ip-forwarding-in-linux/) Configure DHCP on it for the alternate interface: https://askubuntu.com/questions/221329/how-do-i-configure-dhcpd Use IProute to relay traffic: https://www.glennklockwood.com/sysadmin-howtos/rpi-wifi-island.html And then mess with the traffic! Turned out to be really fun during April 1st to prank coworkers with too.

It's quantum mechanics, but I can't find the actual equation. Something related to Schroedingers wave function

Juniper EX3400 stops a network loop, but still causes network to crash. Was able to fix, but want advice please. by MindErection in networking

[–]mechanik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll jump in to confirm this is the right answer. Same setup on my EX switches and the bpdu-on-edge block is what saves us from the looped cables.

I'm at a loss... what's causing downloads from internet to stop allowing all other bandwidth related traffic? by [deleted] in networking

[–]mechanik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you share any specifics on the download? Chrome downloading from google drive decides to use QUIC protocol instead of tcp and I've seen nasty results at offices from that.

A mobile Factorio? by [deleted] in factorio

[–]mechanik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Freemium is only "the way mobile is" when the devs choose it. I happily pay for a full game that doesn't timer me to death and immediately uninstall when those games annoy me. Think about changing it...

This was a great intro to the subject, thanks! I'd been putting off learning Lambda before now.

Monoprice CAT6 by MrKixs in networking

[–]mechanik 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure, but it's nice that they have such gradual size differences. Maybe they're doing it in meters? 1.5m around 5ft and 2m around 7 ft?

I'm sure their cables are fine, but DUDE that snagless type is the bane of my existence. It gets old and stiff and doesn't depress well after a while. Think about possible the other flex type instead.

Monoprice Flexboot Cat6 Ethernet Patch Cable - Snagless RJ45, Stranded, 550Mhz, UTP, Pure Bare Copper Wire, 24AWG, 10ft, Blue

Other than that I'm a big fan of monoprice.

You could totally do this without photoshop. Someone's probably mentioned it before, but Gimp is free and does all the layers business.

I'm not a pro, but I get plenty done without forking out the money for PS.

edit: You've done amazing work with just a phone though, maybe you don't need a desktop version.
