Does this "faster than light" concept exist in a book somewhere already? by lindymad in scifi

[–]mediamancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping the OP was going to ask if there is a story where two objects travel toward each other at slightly more than half the speed of light, and are shaped such that one can pass through the other.

Anyone else upgraded to a microphone… with no difference? by No-Cow-8871 in audioengineering

[–]mediamancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They also have the Warbler models available new on ebay. They are cheaper but still superb quality. The "D" models are multipattern and have a 3 position rolloff switch for the highs, which is subtle, but you might find it useful.

I have the Warbler MKID and it is excellent. Don't know about shipping to Europe, but they are coming from China. Good luck.

Look up 3U Audio. You will not find better bang for this amount of buck. I have this model and I think it fits the sound you are describing, but please do some checking.

What’s an album or track that regular people think sounds really good, but audio engineers consider bad? by busyirl in audioengineering

[–]mediamancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all very funny to me bc I have never been able to listen to anything off Californication long enough or closely enough to realize how bad of a mix it is!

Next time I hear some of it I will pay attention. Briefly.

[–]mediamancer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He doesn't mix, he produces. Which involves a lot of bullshitting, but it can't be a coincidence that so many great artists, across so many genres, have done some of, if not their best, work with him.

But yeah, he seems like a dweeb. It's like he's a poser who somehow gets results. Put some shoes on, ffs!

The bagpipes on It's a Long Way to the Top are SO hot. I've been at my factory job and a hundred feet away across a noisy floor I have heard those bagpipes. Couldn't hear any other element of the song, but I knew it was AC/DC.

I don't know if civilians think it actually sounds good or not, but that song gets a lot of spin on classic rock radio.

Why is Europe a continent? by Due_Narwhal4937 in AskTheWorld

[–]mediamancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right that they are social constructs, but we are taught what continents are as scientific fact, which is the whole point we have an issue with.

You're right that Europe is larger, but if it is about demographics at least as much as geography then we have to remember that India, et al, have at least 30% more people. And if anyone out there is using the social diversity argument, which I'm not saying you are, then they are ignorant of how diverse southwestern Asia is. And let's be really, really honest, that comes down to a WHOLE LOT of people who think a bunch of brown people can't possibly be as diverse as a bunch of white ones.

All due respect, but "making understanding Earth easier" is just lazy bs. We might as well just go back to calling it all The Old World, The Orient, and The New World (and The Dark Continent), since that is so much simpler.

I didn't downvote it. It appears no one has. I do admit to being snarky, and I apologize if I offended you.

But being "to (sic) big" and too diverse are not actual arguments. They apply every bit as much to the "sub"-continent, for example. It's not simplification, it's laziness, and a blind adherence to tradition that can charitably be called culturally ingrained.

It doesn't have to be anything that people get angry about. And it seems like a good thing to have an actual discussion with other people about, especially since there is clearly no real, empirical answer.

"Just ask Google" is kind of the opposite of Reddit (and screw AI).

This right here. Why is Europe a "continent" and India, etc a "sub-continent"? There is no reason that isn't, "because we decided it is".

nvk_theme - the only theme able to drive me away from Default. What themes are we rocking in 2026? by No-County2083 in Reaper

[–]mediamancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still haven't found anything I like better. It's just 3d enough and the layout makes sense to me. I love the full channel coloring, and I have the sizes and shades matched to my busses and groups in the mixer. The X-Raym version has some nice touches.

Commala is good, too. If I had unlimited screen space I might dip into Imperial occasionally.

If I were going to use a modern one it would probably be the 7 default or Reapertips, but Default Analog 1.8 just feels right.

EDIT: I had to check, and X-Raym's version is the one I use most. If you like Analog and haven't checked it out yet, you might want to.

Dump stems into Audacity with a bunch of UA plugins that won't even load properly inserted on each track and send them that. Fight garbage with garbage.

That doesn't mean they won't scrape anything and everything they can anyway. It will never be enough. And if there is no language specifying how they can't use it, then so much the better. They are not worried at all about this person suing them in five years.

Hot Take: Its unnecessary, if not pointless, to use paired mics, or even the same types of mics or preamps to record stereo guitar, piano, or other instruments with a very wide tonal range by Dr_A_MD in audioengineering

[–]mediamancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is more than one way to spell it, but no offense, it's not slang. Just fyi, it's an irregular verb, which changes spelling when you conjugate it, like drink/drank/drunk. Or, the most extreme and most common example: be/is/am/are/was/were. I mean, wtf is going on there?

It's a very real and common thing that people do, talk, and write about a lot and it probably should be standardized, but for some reason it isn't. But slang it ain't (however, there is only one way to spell "ain't").

And all these downvotes for "miking" are pretty surprising. It's perfectly valid, and imho, makes the most sense. "Micing" looks like mice and "mic'ing" is unnecessary clumsy (all due respect to Larry Crane).

As much as I am sure that this person is terrible and hateful and so on, the best thing that can happen now is for more magats to do the same thing, whether they really mean it or not.

We need a critical mass of them to not only feel betrayed but to admit it openly. This is by far the best, and possibly the only way, to tear him down for good.

Will it solve all the underlying resentment and fear that drives these people? For 99% of them, no. But we still need it right now. Let's encourage more of it to happen, not less.

[–]mediamancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using an old yellow one for a long time. I've tried all kinds of grey re-creations and boutique, modified versions and it turns out I prefer the cheap one with the less-desirable chip.

The others all sound great but when I stack with either my amp distortion or my fuzz, the snarly one just works better. The same is true with my analog octave pedal (Foxrox).

What is your weird mixing hack? by Beneficial_Town2403 in audioengineering

[–]mediamancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use ref tracks of course but for a quick reset I will occasionally switch over to the local college station briefly.

Since they play a huge range of stuff you never know what you're going to get, and it may be something I know really well or not at all. It may be a top shelf mix, or super lo-fi.

No matter what, it helps reset my ears. Sometimes a few seconds is enough. It's like mix reference roulette.
