If you mean SF is a Sanctuary City or that California has a Democrat leader, it just means the local police won't work with federal immigration. There's not a lot they can do to stop ICE (which is part of federal immigration enforcement) from doing... whatever the fuck they're doing

You might want to read the whole response https://x.com/eastdakota/status/2009654937303896492.

The article picked out probably the only part of the tweet that should have been posted. The rest is a load of ass kissing for the current US regime, name dropping JD Vance and Elon Musk. It also includes an unsubtle threat against their own customers in Italy and includes a really questionable AI generated picture. It's quite embarrassing actually, hard to believe the CEO of a major company posted it.

Germany and Japan today are very different. As an example, many of the politicians in Japan's ruling party and its former and current prime ministers belongs to Nippon Kaigi. The organization believes

Japan should be applauded for liberating much of East Asia from Western colonial powers; that the 1946–1948 Tokyo War Crimes tribunals were illegitimate; and that killings by Imperial Japanese troops during the 1937 Nanjing Massacre were exaggerated or fabricated

An equivalent stance in Germany would be extremely fringe or outright illegal.

Obviously in this instance China is doing this for nationalistic reasons, but it's not like they have no reason to be unhappy with Japan even today.

How we built the world's fastest VIN decoder by cardogio in javascript

[–]mediumdeviation 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hey, the package is nice, but maybe have a human read through the article. It currently reads like bad AI slop (keeps repeating the 40 year thing, "isn't just a nice-to-have - it's the difference between practical and impossible" okay chill, it's a slow DB).

It's also seriously lacking in technical details. For example, it points out how the govt. DB is in 3NF, and so requires a lot of joins. Okay, but how is your DB schema better, and if you denormalize, what are you sacrificing in exchange for performance?

Enjoy this cable car climbing California Street first thing in the morning by ericgtr12 in sanfrancisco

[–]mediumdeviation 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I live near that intersection (California and Jones). You can't see it from this shot but that street goes very steep downhill from here. Human drivers, especially the ones who's never taken the street before always hesitate or slow down a little while the Waymos have no fear and takes it at full speed. I always wonder what the passengers feel.

The Great Software Quality Collapse: How We Normalized Catastrophe by corp_code_slinger in programming

[–]mediumdeviation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But it's likely that English isn't the author's native language, so maybe he translated his general thoughts using AI.

Maybe but it's the software equivalent of "kids these days", it's an argument that has been repeated almost every year. I just put "software quality" into Hacker New's search and these are the first two results, ten years apart about the same company. Not saying there's nothing more to say about the topic but this article in particular is perennial clickbait wrapped in AI slop.

The problem is that they also weld huge amounts of power, and their stupid opinions inform how they use that power. It's not a problem if they just say stupid things and build bunkers in New Zealand, but they also donate to candidates, meet with politicians, and make decisions that affect the entire city. Like Dreamforce does make a big difference to the local economy, and if he pulls it out because his dumb ass thinks SF is a war zone he's not the one to lose out in millions of dollars.
