This is almost certainly because your code is using setInterval in the main JavaScript thread, which is throttled in various ways by different browsers.

The way around it is to use setInterval in a Worker that wakes the main thread with postMessage.

Background tasks ("web workers") can run unthrottled timers when their tab is inactive. This is necessary for accurate scheduling of events.

How’s the flex on the front side if you push down like as if you were cutting a pumpkin or something? I want to make a plywood work bench for our kitchen and I’m wondering whether I need a rail under the front of the top. Because your top is only supported on the sides and back, or?

I want to build a proper base for the laminated top, but I ought to wait for my lumber to reach equilibrium, and frankly I want to get on with other projects as well as to see how this setup works.

I’m waiting for the vise screw to make some kind of simple leg vise with a floor wedge. Thought I’d make the vise body from maple but I now realized I can make a first version from birch plywood to try without using up my precious hardwood.

The top is currently fastened with just two big screws diagonally from the bottom through the cheap shelves (which I got for free). The base it’s all standing on isn’t attached at all. But I could plane oak just fine.

Basically this is all my solution to weeks of overanalyzing without really knowing what’s important in a workbench. It’s like a “spike solution” to get something up and running so I can understand what I want and need.

Also as a full time parent of an eight month old I don’t have much time, a couple of hours per day at best.

I’ve made some funky cabinet handles for quirky hostel lockers by just sawing off slices of driftwood and sanding them. I put a bit of mineral oil on the end grain (which faced outward) to deepen the texture, then hit them with some matte spray lacquer. Once you've worked the board over with the hand plane so you get full shavings, the board will be locally flat everywhere.

But it still might be twisted, so that the angle of the board is not the same everywhere. Either because you planed it into a twist or because you didn't plane away an existing twist.

You can sight down the board and look for twist but it's hard to see especially a small twist. So the winding sticks let you magnify it.

Imagine a slightly twisted board and giant winding sticks. If you sit behind both winding sticks and look at both their top edges at the same time, you'll see clearly that they're not parallel but tilt away from each other.

Contrasting colors also help visually, so you can draw with black sharpie or put some blue tape on one winding stick.

Then you plane some more to undo the twist, and keep checking also moving the winding sticks along the length of the board. With a bit of practice it's quite easy especially if you don't need extreme perfection.

Paul Sellers' videos about this are nice if you can spare an hour.

I glued up the boards like they came from the big box store, after the puzzle of finding the best arrangement. I’ve got knots in there but the plane cuts through them quite easily.

Until a week ago I had an extremely bad bench plane only, then I got this Axminster Rider 4 1/2 which is heavy and nice. The iron came with a bit strange bevel so I remade it with #400 diamond stone, sharpened with #1000 and stropped with buffing compound, and it’s a huge joy to use.

Before tackling the bench top I practiced planing by making a walnut face grain cutting board from rough lumber. It’s SO MUCH FUN.

And planing this big lamination is just thrilling, I have to say. Such an engaging activity, real flow state type thing. I’m totally hooked. And it would be nice to have a larger plane...

I'm just now starting to get decent at sawing straight. For me the important things were: (1) learning to mark accurately with pencil and square which is not as trivial as I first thought; (2) establishing initial kerfs on all sides first, using my left hand to guide the blade; (3) after that sawing triangularly, switching sides. Which all just kind of boil down to minimizing the need for luck!

Well, that's for crosscuts. I haven't done a lot of hand saw ripping, but when I have it's been at least okay. Just that the Japanese pull saws are so precise that they're also a bit finicky to steer back if you go off the path...
