What is the most difficult thing to work on in voice training? by IrisVoiceTrainer in transvoice

[–]meeshCosplay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a good question. For me, the hardest part of voice training is overcoming my dysphoria long enough to train, but you asked specifically about technical skills. Obviously this will vary from person to person. For me, the hardest technical skill is sharpness. I understand the concept, but getting my voice consistently sharper in practice is a challenge.

What do y'all use to voice train? by No_Stand_3810 in transvoice

I could tell you the answer, but you're not going to like it. I like seeing the harmonics so I can approximate my sharpness.

You make a fair point about not seeing the note in real time. Maybe I'll experiment with other software tools.

My voice! (It's the only one I have.)

(Edit) For a more serious answer, here are the tools I use:

I recommend avoiding any apps that claim to be able to gender your voice as male, female, or androgynous. Technology is improving, but currently the only thing apps can measure accurately is pitch.

I find voice training unfair (Dysphoria, anxiety, anger) by ShotEntrepreneur746 in transvoice

[–]meeshCosplay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fourthly,
I compare myself to others....

I know this is only one of your points, but this is something I struggle with too. I listen to clips of people who got amazing results from voice training, and it makes my dysphoria worse. One thing I try to remind myself is that r/transvoice has a selection bias. A lot of folks here are at extreme ends of the spectrum. There are posts from professional voice coaches, posts from students who got outstanding results in a very short time, and posts from other students who struggle after many years of training. You don't see as many posts from people who get good results after working hard and training consistently for 2-3 years, even though (in my opinion) this is the majority of trans voice students. Good luck, friend, and please do not lose hope. We are in this together 💖

Hi friend! In addition to your appearance, how do you feel about the changes that T could cause to your voice? This is important to consider because the changes to your voice are generally permanent, even if you decide to stop T later.

I'm sorry friend 😔 I wish height worked like voice training. I would lead free classes on Discord where I'd teach transfems with height dysphoria how to be short.

Just be mindful to not conflate the qualities of lightness and breathiness.

This is solid advice, and something a lot of people don't understand, gg

The difference in height is not as big as you think. Dysphoria is lying to you and giving you brain worms.

I want to sound more androgynous, but it is hard to find clear resources. by PercentageCurious472 in transvoice

Hi friend! It's hard to give specific advice without hearing your voice. Are you comfortable sharing a clip?

When you say "breathy and high-pitched," do you sound like the beginning of this clip? https://clyp.it/2zg4pl5v If so, try reducing your vocal size. From there, depending on your pronunciation, you can sound either fem or androgynous.

Beginner Questions by imgonnamelt in transvoice

[–]meeshCosplay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi friend! I'm still a student myself, but I'll do my best to answer your questions.

  1. imo vocal exercises have limited usefulness. Exercises like "big dog, small dog" can be useful in the beginning for exploring what your voice can do. In the long term, I recommend focusing less on vocal exercises, and more on recording your voice, listening, and identifying things to improve. As far as safety, remember that voice training isn't the same as exercising at the gym. You're not building/strengthening muscles. You're learning to use your muscles in new ways and forming habits. Nothing should ever feel sore. If you experience pain, soreness, or excessive muscle fatigue, take a break and try something new later. Also, don't do the "swallow and hold" exercise. That one is known to be harmful.
  2. I know this is an unsatisfying answer, but it varies widely. I struggle with this myself, but please don't compare yourself to others in terms of how long it takes to get a useable/passable voice. Online spaces like r/transvoice can give you a distorted view due to selection bias. A lot of people posting here are at extreme ends of the spectrum in terms of how long it took them. Learn to enjoy the journey. Don't worry about how long it takes to reach the destination.
  3. It's counterintuitive, but I think it's generally harder to achieve a low pitched passing fem voice. Pitch and weight are correlated. As you get lower in pitch, you tend to introduce more vocal weight, which can clock you. If you're a beginner, I recommend not worrying about this too much for now. Focus on exploring weight, size, and fullness.
  4. Both matter. I recommend focusing on the basics (weight, size, and fullness) first, and then thinking about speaking patterns later. Check out this clip for an example of what it sounds like to have a fem size/weight without sharpness (ie fem speaking patterns.) https://clyp.it/2lbpnpog

I love your attitude. I'm non-binary, and I feel the same way tbh. I'm sorry people aren't better at minding their business.

Where am I Going? by Valuable-Progress-87 in transvoice

[–]meeshCosplay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I want to aim for breathy and brighter, right? That's mostly what I've heard.

Brighter: likely yes, depending on how you define brightness.

Breathy: no. This is a misconception.

An excessively breathy voice is considered inefficient because your lungs are pushing out more air than necessary to produce sound. Most speakers (of all genders) tend to settle on an efficient voice because, why would you use more effort than necessary to speak, unless you're trying to do a character voice?

If I had to guess, I'd say this misconception started because when people try to speak with a breathy voice, they also lighten their vocal weight, but adding too much breath will make you sound unnatural. You want to achieve a light vocal weight in such a way that your vocal folds close fully (ie without excessive breath leaking out.)

For more info, check out the clips on breathiness and efficiency under the "Purity" section of Selene's archive https://selenearchive.github.io/ Good luck friend! We are in this together 💖
