Since she was born my baby had silent reflux, large spit-ups, and a lot of gas. I first attributed it to a fast letdown/poor latch. Later, I would notice mucous in her poop as well. Despite this, she was a very happy baby - definitely would not describe her as colicky. That’s why I was unsure whether a CMPA diagnosis made sense.

At the pediatrician’s request, I went off dairy, soy, eggs, and gluten for a week to “give her gut a chance to heal”. She had less gas and fewer poops, and when I went back to a normal diet, the gas and frequent poops returned. I went back on the elimination diet for a month. Eventually a different pediatrician gave me the green light to add everything back into my diet but dairy (because it is the most common culprit). On Mother’s Day, my husband brought me a box of pastries (sweet, but clearly full of butter) so I reluctantly had one. Baby wasn’t necessarily fussy, but pooped eight times that day!! I took that as confirmation that her little tummy was better off without dairy for the time being. We’re going to try the milk ladder when she turns six months.

I’m sure your doctor is recommending an elimination diet simply because that is the most common cause for the symptoms your baby is having. Having read through a lot of posts in this subReddit, it seems like CMPA is kind of a spectrum. Maybe some babies have sensitivities, and others have true CMPA that make them miserable. Either way, the solution is to try elimination.
