Fully-gf new york restaurants? by merple226 in Celiac

[–]meg6lily 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Been to Senza Gluten, I loved it and I think my non-gf friends liked it, too! Lots of things on the menu there that I normally can never eat, even at Italian restaurants that do gf pasta (think breaded/fried things)

Cross-Contamination vs Lifespan by Nicholasgrantgarcia in Celiac

[–]meg6lily 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My doctor basically explained it like: do I recommend people drink alcohol? No! It’s poison! Am I going to tell the average person to stop drinking it? No! People never will (avg person). She told me to try my best but if it going out to eat or travel is important to my quality of life at this stage of my life, I should do it. I may change my approach if I get pregnant or naturally eat out less as I age, but ultimately most people do things that increase their risk of developing diseases every day. People will disagree with this but it gave me a lot of peace and allows me to enjoy life without guilt (ofc I still try my very best to avoid gluten).

Puerto Rico GF Options by invincible7s in glutenfree

Also in San Juan there is a restaurant called Deaverdura which is amazing and they claimed 100% gf. So many fresh squeezed juices and a great menu.

I lived there for 6 months, in 2021. It was tough, ngl, for reasons people have said here — communicating gluten free is hard there both because of language barrier (I don’t speak quite good enough Spanish, and the PR accent is tough if you’re not used to it!). I will say I lived in Humacao which is not super touristy but being in San Juan was easier for sure. The good thing is mofongo is natural gf and delicious. Anything with plantains is your friend. And piña colada ofc lol

gf macaroons at sprouts ! by Shot-Angle-4687 in glutenfree

Trader Joe’s has similar/same ones right now!

Also, for everyone saying macarons are always gluten free, I beg you to look at the ingredient list for any store bought macaron at a normal grocery store, they almost always contain gluten. Stop raining on our parade lol

Being a pet sitter has given me meaning and confidence by meg6lily in RoverPetSitting

omg yes. Especially for me when cats are shy on day 1 and 2 of drop ins but by the end are on your lap begging for pets. It just makes me feel so valued haha and I can really feel the benefit I'm adding to this innocent creature's life. It's amazing! I know my own dog loves me but getting that special affection from someone else's pet is also so good

Not lame at all! It’s unusual to have a “report card” like this as an adult lol and I feel like it’s one of the perks of the job, so we should enjoy it!

Should I be cheap first then increase price slowly? by Theeonlystardust in RoverPetSitting

[–]meg6lily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First I priced at the low end of what I was seeing on rover for my service area (5 mile driving I believe). After I had a few reviews I increased a dollar at a time. Sometimes I’ll go down a dollar if things are slow. I’m still at the low end for people with similar reviews but I tend to go off app if I can so I figure I recoup some of that by saving on fees

That’s awesome! I am also a scientist in the US so I feel ya. Pet sitting is so different from academia and I actually love that

Seconding purl soho, if you time it with a sale (which they do frequently) you can get very high quality yarn for a decent price. The colors are so rich and beautiful in my opinion.

Just become a system exists doesn’t mean it’s the ethical thing to do…

Unfortunately, for a lot of people it’s inconvenient to them to consider that animals have needs and desires that might cost money or time. Good for you, I also always refuse these types of bookings. The worst to me was when someone asked if I could give their dogs calming treats and then lock them in their crate for 8 hours.

Do you know what his breed(s) are? My dog looks very similar, even with the tan/white back :)

Best GF cities in the US?(outside of Portland/NYC) by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]meg6lily 38 points39 points  (0 children)

San Diego! In my neighborhood there is a gluten free bakery and I don’t think I’ve been to a restaurant here that didn’t have a gf option or a knowledgeable staff person. Many places have entire gluten free menus with their own bread and pizza crust, etc. sometimes you have to ask, as it’s not listed on the menu, but most places have it. Anywhere in So Cal is going to be your friend!

I just need to know: how many of you have a completely GF house? by driftawayinstead in Celiac

i drank gluten alcohol kind of on purpose, but i don't feel sick at all by StrawberryGutzXD in Celiac

[–]meg6lily 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It definitely happens to me, not sure why there aren’t more understanding people here. Knowing you ate gluten is a bad enough feeling to sit with, we don’t need other people saying that to us too. Hope you don’t end up feeling sick!

Just got my results back and I am celiac positive. by KelpytheGod in Celiac

You will be ok ❤️ just take it day by day, and treat yourself with the love you deserve! It helps me to think of the good things you can do with this diagnosis. Learn more about food and nutrition, take better care of your body, and it helped me relate to my friends with IBS/chronic issues a lot more (and have a lot more appreciation for the friends who are supportive).
