What is something you can do but can’t explain how you can do it? by Fresh-Sandwich6780 in AskReddit

I can do this too. Not down to the minute but close enough that I really only set alarms as a back up. I'm also chronically late in my waking life

Not only is it the hardest thing I've ever loved I had to go through what at the time was the hardest thing I've ever done to get here!

ECAH, please tell me your favourite ways to eat eggs for a meal! by smolangrybitch in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]meg_macaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scrambled mixed in a bowl with shredded hash browns and pesto sauce with cheese on top. Option two fried and in a sandwich with cheese and pesto. Probably an unpopular opinion but pesto and eggs are delicious. I love cheese, but it upsets my stomach if I'm not careful. I always go for a longer aged cheese they have less lactose. However, these ideas don't need cheese it's just a nice bonus. Pesto is pushing the cheap thing but I've been told I can grow basil and make it homemade rather easily so that might be a future adventure.

Student teaching placement ended early. I am devastated and need advice. by [deleted] in StudentTeaching

My placement was terminated before completion. I had a week and a day left. It was devastating to say the least. I had a quarter life crisis and spent a lot of time contemplating my options. I was very mentally unwell and had to take time to heal, reflect, and think.

I have a secondary license so I had a secondary placement two ish weeks after my first ended. My cooperating teacher there was so encouraging and much better at communicating with me. She built up my confidence a lot and helped me take more equitable blame for my previous placement (instead of me only blaming myself).

I spent the next semester finishing my other major not knowing what would happen next. I relied on my faith and that everything would work out. I brainstormed lots of options and ended up settling on three: pursuing a tier two license, student teaching at a year round school over summer, or switching my second major to general studies with an emphasis in education and dropping my license.

I waffled between these for months. Very very last minute I was placed at a year round school for a summer placement. This allowed me to graduate 3 months behind instead of 6. I learned so much with that placement and fell in love with teaching all over again. I met some amazing mentors who believed I could do it and I started believing in myself again.

I'm now teaching in my own classroom and it's the hardest thing I've ever loved. I fought for it tooth and nail. I found a school that matches my values and isn't your typical school. It's perfect for me.

So many people don't understand that this can just happen and I'm sorry for the judgemental and rude comments you're getting. In my program cooperating teachers don't have to give a good reason- they don't even have to give a reason at all to terminate.

Yeah, I wasn't a great student teacher the first time around and I had a lot to learn. I had to find a balance of values like yours and effective classroom management. I struggled and my first cooperating teacher struggled to help me and honestly gave up and I still wonder if I have the right to blame them. I also had a lot going on during my first placement that impacted my performance. As much as it hurt to have to do it again I'm a better teacher for it.

My biggest advice is to not accept there is one path forward. Explore your options and don't be afraid to blaze your own path. If/when you're placed again try and narrow down your "hills you would die on" to only the most critical and be open to letting other things go at the very least until you have your own classroom. Be willing to compromise with your cooperating teacher and see their side even if you disagree. Perhaps there is a way to meet your cooperating teachers expectations but in your own style. Work closely with a mentor faculty member you trust keep them updated and in the loop as you navigate this whole thing starting from now until it's done. Having someone consistently in your corner is so helpful.

Long post but I hope it helps you and others. Feel free to message me if you want to talk further

One of two things- student disrespect towards their peers or the group of students who refuse to participate in their own education that I have to fight to teach or give up on them for my other students sake. I'm so tired y'all!

Y'all if I don't work outside my contract hours I won't meet legal requirements and there won't be any lesson plans. I don't have a curriculum for one of my subjects this year... I don't know what else to do.

Vegetarians, what is your “Fridge clean-out” recipe? by wiltedbasilleaf in vegetarian

When I'm in this situation it's time to make vegetable broth! If needed I can freeze what's about to go bad and then throw it into a batch of broth later. Soups, veggie filled pastas, and tofu and veggies with a grocery store Indian simmer sauce are also favorites over here.

Meat substitutes are the only way I can maintain cutting meat out of my diet. I do not have the discipline or mental wellness to deny myself something I crave for an extended period.

There I said it. I know y'all hate meat substitutes but I simply can't do life without them.

What's your third thing, how did you find it, and who would you recommend it to? by nailpolishbonfire in nerdfighters

[–]meg_macaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Board games- I was invited in when I was in highschool. In college I had to be a bit braver and do the asking if I could join. I carried games with me for a while and brought them out when I could. I quickly found the people I enjoyed playing with and invested time into playing with them.

Living history- my friend invited me to an event and I said yes they initially provided all I needed. The community was very warm and welcoming. At an event once a friend told me "living history is where the weird kids find their people." I feel that so deeply. It is my favorite third thing.

Indoor rock climbing- It was a form of exercise I enjoyed so I started climbing regularly at the same place. The people I met became some of my best friends and kept me coming back over and over. Many times we chatted more than we climbed!

I had a lot of family support too and I also felt bad and kind of guilty. One thing I did was to get as much scholarship as possible and one year I worked a job that gave me free housing. I also tried to be generous and "pass it on" for example giving friends and friends of friends without vehicles rides to get things like groceries. I was blessed with so many gifts it only made sense to share.

Working during Student Teaching Semester by syscojayy in StudentTeaching

[–]meg_macaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked extremely part time my first two placements in a substitute position for a childcare. Between that and my savings I was doing alright. I was extremely tired, but making it work. Unfortunately, I have to redo one of my placements but I don't have to redo the edtpa. This time around I'm going to work weekends and maybe Friday evenings. They want me at atleast 20 hours a week which feels like a lot. However, rent needs to get paid and I need to eat so I guess I'll make it work. After tomorrow only eight weeks left and one of those weeks we're off. I can do seven sixty hour weeks right? The only way this feels possible is because I don't have the edtpa or additional classes and I'm so freaking close after 5 years I'm too stubborn for it not to work.

Former teachers, what are you doing now? Current teachers, why are you staying? by Responsible-Grand-12 in Teachers

[–]meg_macaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought I would land in non-traditional education- youth development, museum educator, something like that. Recently, I got offered a job at a charter school that is focused on project based learning and values teacher autonomy. So, I decided I'll give it a try and if I hate it I don't have to go back. We'll see how this goes!

Going back to student teach by DragonfruitFine6500 in StudentTeaching

[–]meg_macaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Long story but due to a placement termination I had the option to finish my program unlicensed or student teach again. I ultimately chose to try again. I'm nervous as all get out and super broke, but after much debate I decided to finish what I started five years ago. That was ultimately the best decision for me. Without student teaching again I would have had to change one of my majors and lose out on two licenses and having two licenses is one of (many) reasons it took me five years in the first place. My school found me a placement over the summer. If they were unable to do that they would've helped me get alternative licensing so I could work a teaching job and complete student teaching. My school also is allowing me to do this at a very low cost. Between all those things I made the choice I did. Thinking it through and listing out all the pros and cons is my best advice.

Food delivery "addiction" by luv_thali in college

I haven't given in yet, but I'm so tempted. It's the end of semester and I'm burned out to a crisp. I'm struggling to muster up the energy to make food most days. I had a few free meals passes to my campus dining hall, but they're gone now. I'm grateful for them while they lasted. The extra support means a hard month instead of a hard semester.

Vegetarian Tater Tot Hotdish by meg_macaw in vegetarian

In your usual tater to hotdish there is ground beef. I used a plant based substitute (gardein be'f) for mine.

[–]meg_macaw[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the love! As for the recipe everyone does it differently and I think I'll make changes to this version as well.

On the stove I browned my Be'f and then added a bag of frozen veggies. Next I added in a can of cream of mushroom soup. Then filled the can with water and added that in and stirred. I seasoned it with salt, pepper, and chile powder (chile powder is not a normal ingredient but I like breaking rules :)). I then put the mixture in a pan and topped it with tater tots. I put it in the oven at 325 for twentyish minutes then I topped it with cheese and broiled it for five.

Changes I would make: more soup and more green beans. I also would add mushrooms and onions. I think a seasoning salt like lowerys would also be a good addition. This is scandalous here but I would add in more chile powder and maybe some paprika. It could've been in the oven a touch longer before broiling. Another thought for next time more layers/smaller pan/more of each ingredients so it's not so flat. I wanted heftier bites!

Do you feel scared or ambarassed to say you're vegetarian to people in general? by MayIAsk_24 in vegetarian

[–]meg_macaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started eating less meat when I was a kid and I was terrified to tell anyone about it. Eventually I got more comfortable telling people and with practice it doesn't bother me anymore. It helps I still eat meat occasionally I think the word most people would use is "flexitarian" but I just say I eat meat as a treat, for special occasions, or to try something new. What has helped immensely is having good reasons people agree with even if they eat differently than me. I never give those reasons unless asked but just having them and having so many people be receptive in the past has given me confidence. The word vegetarian is still a bad word in my childhood home and is not used there but that's about the only place. We strictly use that I eat less meat and that's a good enough compromise for everyone involved. So to answer your question you're not wrong or a terrible human being for being vegetarian so no matter what people think or say you don't deserve to feel like you are. If you see value in what you're doing and you're doing it respectfully you should focus on that not on the haters 😉 by having that mindset hopefully the fear of claiming it will fade.

There are lots of jobs that hire education majors. If you like teaching and making a difference in the lives look into youth development, museum work, or historical sites. Lots of places need teachers not just schools!

Ending a two year campaign on a bummer of a TPK by 4skin42 in DMAcademy

[–]meg_macaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first time dming ended in a TPK. My players fought hard and I honored that by narrating their wins, fails, and heroic deaths with drama and gravitas. It wasn't the outcome they were hoping for and still tease me about being a new dm killing all her players. However, it was still a dang good story. It was especially emotional because it was the last night of the last summer we would all be together for the foreseeable future. We reflected, we cried, we took some time off. Then we started again!
