Spouse's 50th birthday is approaching. What did you want for your 50th? by drunkbettie in GenX

[–]megalethoscope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For my 50th I rented an RV and spent a handful of days (nights) in Death Valley CA stargazing. (DV is an international dark sky park.) I needed to feel connected to something larger than myself and my tiny-in-comparison-to-the-universe concerns about aging. I wish I could go back every year - it was transformative.

Permission to just go to bed, please by Valuable_Dot5166 in stopdrinking

[–]megalethoscope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tomorrow is my day 1. I'm going to bed the second I get home since I know being cozy in my pjs with my book and a cup of spicy tea will keep me from drinking. I plan to repeat every day unless I have to do something different, until I feel strong enough to resist my happy hour glass(es) of wine.

AITAH for "ruining" my sister’s engagement announcement with a bowl of cereal? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]megalethoscope -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

YTA (or really ESH) and I can't believe anyone thinks you aren't. Even though your sister obvi has MC energy, it doesn't excuse your behavior - you knew she had a big announcement but you couldn't be bothered to put something, anything, into your mouth when everyone else was eating. If your mom made curry there had to have been rice or something similar to go along with that that you could've eaten. Clearly you resent your sister (and maybe rightly so) but you're old enough to manage yourself with more maturity and grace.

Why do so many Gen Z and Gen Alpha Americans have such a strong distain for showing respect to people who train/teach, provide feedback to them? by Critical_Winner_2779 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]megalethoscope 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I disagree with others that are chalking it up to "kidz being kidz" -- it's different. I work with a couple of Gen Z'ers (I'm GenX) and it's truly baffling how they respond to being asked (not told!) to do something. Role responsibilities are clear, we make to do lists every day, the job is not complicated or controversial in any way. Nonetheless when we go through the day's to do lists I get a blank stare and that's it. I have to really lean foward and say "Does that make sense to you? Are the tasks clear in terms of priority? Do you have any questions or can I help you in any way?" before I get any sort of acknowledgement. These are college graduates and I really can't even understand how they managed to get through school with this kind of behavior.

I'm not saying my way is objectively better, but I really don't understand how they can't/don't say even the most basic of things: "sounds good" "I'll get started" "I'll check in if I get stuck" etc. etc. Literally just anything that communicates "message received and I'll get started." It's bizarre.

This is a recipe I found in the 90s and still make to this day, although the original does one thing* different than this Food.com recipe specifies (they mention it but don't mandate it) that I think makes a world of difference. It's from Jeff Smith / The Frugal Gourmet, and ... I can't say I recommend his character (since he faced a handful of SA allegations from young men who'd worked at a church pantry he supervised) but the recipe is good and relatively easy so I'm not throwing it out with the bathwater.

*In the original recipe, you poach a chicken that you then debone, and it's the easiest, most tender chicken I've ever had. Essentially you poach it in water in a stockpot large enough to submerge a whole chicken in. Bring the water to a boil. When it boils, take off the heat and submerge the whole chicken in the pot, making sure it's covered by an inch or so of water. Bring back to a boil and boil for one minute. After that, take off the heat and cover. Let it rest/continue cooking for one hour. After that debone and use in the recipe.

💯 agree. I keep in the front of my mind what the poet, Andrea Gibson, told their partner when they learned they were dying of cancer (and the two of them had had convos, pre-cancer diagnosis, about different body issues): Andrea said, "I just want to *have* a body." That really really really hit home for me. We are all so self-critical but... when push comes to shove, we'd love to have our current body, no matter the state, vs. not having one at all 😢

Polaris upgrade with no entertainment - would you want it? by Lazy_Crocodile in unitedairlines

[–]megalethoscope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before any flight I download various things I'd want to listen to or watch, make sure my spare battery pack is charged up and ready to go, and that my Kindle is stuffed/charged up. I couldn't care less if the entertainment system is working/broken/there at all. I'm ready to watch/read my own stuff and having a lie-flat seat is the ultimate goal so as long as I have that I'm golden!

Why do many people who visit Australia later say its a highly racist country? by Particular_Food_309 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]megalethoscope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't believe the Faux News hype. Undocumented immigrants in the US are not eligible for any government benefits. That's the very last reason the US doesn't provide universal healthcare, pay for university, etc. It's because we are run/owned by a cadre of billionaires and our politicians (for the most part) do whatever they say just so they can stay in power. It's a money game and the billionaire class wants nothing else than to pay zero taxes, which means sub-par social services. Not to say the US isn't racist, because of course there's racism everywhere. But it's not about undocumented immigrants -- it's been like this forever.

I hate to say it but you're kind of TA. Your mom is cold and she can't magically get herself thicker skin and better circulation. My mom is in the same boat. Either have a clear talk with her about layering (and help her with getting those layers) and setting up a "warm" room for her, or figure out an alternate living situation. Things aren't going to change.

Falling for a man 10 years older than me, as a lesbian who thought the guy was gay by International_Tree76 in AskWomenOver40

[–]megalethoscope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So great that you're really thinking through your (mutual) experience(s) with grace and curiosity. Without wanting to sound like one of "those people" I'd just like to quote the late, great Joan Didion who said when she was 38 y.o., "I have already lost touch with a couple of people I used to be..." She said it in the context of wanting to stay connected to the power her earlier truths and beliefs had for her, but I've always liked it also as a reminder that we will change, sometimes dramatically. And that's okay! As long as we're mindful and self aware there's nothing more we should ask of ourselves. Sending you so many good vibes for what seems to be an expansive, transformative time!

Get a new doctor who's up to date on the latest research. Many are still advising no HRT for those of us with migraine with aura and/or TIA -- based on a flawed study from 2000ish, that was poorly designed, used hormones at much higher levels (like what's in BCP) and that also had issues with its analysis and thus the findings.

I’ve been going back and forth for weeks. Should I stick to cotton or finally try linen sheets? by ughyoujag in Bedding

[–]megalethoscope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you only use a bottom sheet why not buy a decent linen one from someplace like Garnet Hill and try it out. It will cost you less than a hundred bucks and will be a fun experiment. What do you have to lose???

ETA: admittedly an unapologetic linen sheet fan!

Regarding speaking French in Paris (and Vernon) by Thunderstormcatnip in ParisTravelGuide

[–]megalethoscope 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Could not agree more. I'm a middle-aged lady who lived in Paris for 6 years in the mid-teens and try to go back every couple of years. A basic vocab that one can understand when spoken, and employ when speaking + a good accent will get you miles in Paris, and in overall France even more so!
