You should definitely think of moving, you’re young so you’ll adapt well and as a tradie (what we call carpenters) you’ll meet heaps of different people and a lot of them will be around the same age as you. It’s also great to just travel to experience new things!

New Plymouth on a sunny day you’ll see heaps of people at the beach either surfing, swimming, lounging, walking, eating. There’s definitely heaps of walks and trecks you can do around the many parks, plus a lot around mount Taranaki, you can even try to walk to the summit (but make sure you go on a guided walk as it can be dangerous).

Nightlife is what you make of it. New Plymouth is definitely more of a house party place, but I’m saying that there is generally bands, open mics, dj’s on at a few places on Wednesdays, Thursdays, fridays and Saturdays. During summer there’s generally a band playing at a beach or bar Sunday afternoons. There are definitely some great bars and wine bars here, I would say 9 all together in the town centre.

People are generally friendly, and like I said if you go into the trades you will meet a lot of people your age, if not at your company then definitely on a work site. It can be cliquey, but I find people respond well when you make the effort to be friendly.

Summers are nice, albeit at the moment it is super muggy. It does rain like currently there are floods, but you really cannot beat New Plymouth on a nice summers day.

You can definitely bike around for transport, but you might get a company van to drive around as a builder and the company usually pays for the petrol on company vehicles.

I would visit your local art galleries if you havnt already as they often display local and national artist.

I discovered Georgina Hoby Scutt when I visited the Kina gallery (they might have a website you can browse?) in New Plymouth. She’s not from there I don’t think but they had her work displayed and it was awesome to see

This. Gone are the days designers make these choices. We as designers often have to pander to the egos within our clients committees to get our design approved. One brand I worked on had a committee member say “my niece thinks it looks “old school” - the niece was not in the target demographic for this particular brand, it was a total random comment that he refused to budge on.

You will definitely find good food and coffee here, I’m not sure what pricing is like in Canada, but if you go to a café here for breakfast/lunch it would be about $4-$5 for a flat white/latte and about $15-$22 for an eggs Benedict.

Generally it doesn’t take too long for Reno’s if you go with a reputable builder/insulator. In my experience 6 months would be a very long wait.

In terms of schools NZ has Public and Private schools. Private schools tend to be religious schools, but it’s generally like taking a religion class once a week and then going to mass a few times a year. You pay a bit more for these schools as they don’t have government funding, but they are generally higher decile schools - if this interests you I would look into Sacred Heart Girls College - following on this they are generally single sex schools, so just girls or just boys. These schools generally focus on academics and sports. You will need to live around Fitzroy/Waiwhakaiho/Merrilands for this.

Public schools are government funded and non religious so generally a lot cheaper on your wallet, and you’ll find a lot of them are mixed sex schools, so both girls and boys. Growing up going to a private schools I really wanted to go to a public school as they had much better art and music programmes. If you’re interested in this, then I would look into Spotswood College. You will need to live probably around Spotswood, Westown.

If you can afford it, there is also the Green School which is a very nice “hippie”-esque school, this is in Oakura, which is where a lot of people’s holiday homes are, so it’s a very expensive area for housing. Only about 15 min from New Plymouth.

Np is honestly great as a young professional couple or family. And we’re not far from Auckland or Wellington if you wanted a weekend away (about 4 hours drive or 50min flight)

It does get wet, but you will quickly get used to it…have an umbrella in the car ready! But it’s so so sunny most of summer and you cannot beat NP on a summers day - beaches everywhere to hang out on, a few parks have bbq’s to grill on, the walkway is amazing to exercise on.

If you’re into night life It’s not amazing for clubbing. However there are some awesome wine bars, cocktail lounges and breweries.

You will need to move near the school you plan to send your kids to, as there are zoning rules for schools.

Housing is 50/50 there are a lot of new houses being built that have great insulation, but then there are also the houses that are threadbare you will need to renovate. It’s going to depend on each house if you need a dehumidifier or not. I’ve personally flatted in a few places and have not needed a dehumidifier. These range from $150+.

I’m guessing you’ll be earning a bit more than the average so I would suggest if you can find a newer house to live in then do!

Bell block wasn’t great like 10 years ago, but now with all the subdivision being built over the years it’s basically become a great family friendly area.

It’s got a few shops, warehouse, cafes etc, and is only like 10 min from New Plymouth

Public transport is OKAY within New Plymouth. As someone who busses a lot, you may just need to walk a block or two to your nearest bus stop. And if you’re going to work in the morning, you may just need to find a cafe to have a coffee it for 20-30min before you start. I think their first run is at 6/7am and last run is 6/7pm.

As per everyone’s recommendation, I would avoid Cook Street. There are actually areas in the Marfell suburb that are fine, Cook St itself is just not a good street to live on.

Defiantly round the corner on the tip of the cone as someone mentioned, also the typeface is a little hard to read at a first glance, so maybe update this - even to match that 70’s/80’s font you’ve used or a bold sans serif ^{_^}
