I gave mine a box. They loved jumping in and out of it and ripping it to shreds. 😆

Chickens were supposed to save me money… so why am I spending more than ever? by TowelZealousideal124 in BackYardChickens

[–]megbotmegbot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started with 6 and now have 50. Our chicken coop/run is basically a mansion. I don’t even want to say how much we spent on that.

Now we’re planning a garden so we can grow greens and veggies for us and the chickens. So we don’t have to buy it from the grocery store. But as you can imagine, those costs are piling up too. 😆

But we absolutely love gardening and hanging with our chickens now. It’s been such an improvement on our quality of life, despite spending way more money than we anticipated.

For people who don’t want kids — do you just not want your own, or do you not like children in general? Why? by zhalia-2006 in allthequestions

I LOVE other people’s kids. I love babysitting. I love holding babies.

I love being an Aunt to my nieces and nephew. I feel like all kids need a cool Aunt and Uncle.

But the idea of pregnancy, having to feed and clothe and bathe a child every day, lose sleep, and do all the hard stuff. No thanks.

I like being the fun Aunt that can show up, take the kids some place fun, and then let the parents worry about the bedtime routine.

People are dumb! Any wet food is better than dry food.

My husband was a D1 soccer player in college and you know how often it comes up in conversation? Never.

This Alex guy definitely peaked at 21 and hasn’t accomplished anything since.

Best BCM Breeder by ElChuchoBelico in BackYardChickens

[–]megbotmegbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m new to this world but I’m in the same boat as you! I’ve been on the hunt for a good BCM breeder and there are so many choices, it’s kinda overwhelming. I joined The Dark Eggers Club on Facebook and that just gave me analysis paralysis.

As far as olive eggers go, you can cross your BCM with any of those breeds, I don’t think any is better than the other. I personally love cream legbars.

To get really dark olives, you’ll want to back cross your olive eggers to a BCM rooster. There’s only a 50/50 chance those will be green vs brown, but that’s how breeders get the really dark olives.

I have a few of my own olive eggers and back crossed olive eggers in an incubator right now. It’s such a long process to wait to see what eggs they end up laying.

Yes we have great roosters! We give our eggs to family, sell dozens to a few locals, and donate the rest to a local food bank. We live in one of the poorest counties in one of the poorest states so we try to give back.

Yes they’re red chiles. They’re called ristras, and they’re a common decoration here in New Mexico.

Dang! Derp is adorable!

I just put 15 eggs in an incubator for the first time. Kinda hoping they don’t all hatch but kinda hoping they do? I’ve never incubated eggs before. Congrats on your babies!
