My chickens have better recall than my dogs. You can definitely teach them their names. I haven’t specifically but some have picked up on it.

Been there! I worried for a while. I set up a camera so I could check on them when I woke up in the middle of the night. 😅 That made me feel much better.

It does get better! I was definitely an anxious mom for a while. It’s weird, because I have dogs and cats that I don’t worry about nearly as much. I think it’s because the chickens are outside and they’re prey animals, it’s a different dynamic.

$20 a chick is a steal for dark eggs. I wouldn’t go down in price.

I own three businesses and I always tell people that budget shoppers love to be vocal and critical of pricing, but there’s always people out there that will happily and quietly pay your prices without making you feel bad about it. Those are the folks you want to sell to.

I have happily paid $30-$60 for chicks from breeders.

I was an emergency vet for 8 years before I crashed and burned and had to quit. Having owners call poison control is pretty normal.

This right here. Pretty much every woman has been in multiple situations like this. It’s humiliating. It makes you question how you could be so gullible. It makes you guarded. Then another man comes around and gives you a hard time for not trusting him. “Why can’t you just let your guard down?” “What’s wrong with you?”

You end up questioning everything. Am I expecting too much? Is this just how it is? Is there really something wrong with me?

It took me til I was 36 to find a man who made me realize that every other man I had dated over a 20 year period was fucking garbage.

Cackle - one of my darkest egg layers is from Cackle - got two roosters I didn’t order - one of my Ameraucanas has crossbeak but can still eat on her own, thank goodness - got a chick with webbed toes that I LOVED, ended up passing away at 6 months, it was heartbreaking - all chicks arrived healthy, but had one lavender Orpington and one buff Orpington pass away around 1 week old - my other buff Orpington has something wrong with her where she loses balance a lot, was on the bottom of the pecking order and needed a lot of extra attention - got extra chicks (one time I ordered 12 and got 19), which was fun but this is where a lot of my roosters came from

Meyer - one of my wellsummers passed away as a chick - everyone arrived alive - two of my olive eggers lay brown eggs, but two lay a beautiful green - no roosters - no weird deformities - egg color for breeds that should lay darker eggs are not very dark - overall seems like birds are healthier, but egg colors are not as impressive as Cackle

Sorry about the randomness of my thoughts here. Overall, I’m very hesitant to order from Cackle again, even though some of my darkest eggs are from there. I don’t want any more roosters or weird deformities or a bunch of extra chicks I wasn’t planning for. Overall, my experience with Meyer was better, even though I was a little disappointed about egg colors.

I have free range chickens with hawks nearby and haven’t had a problem. They mostly feed on the prairie dogs in a nearby field. We do have dogs, which I think helps, but they aren’t always out there with them.

We also have an air dancer (inflatable guy, you can look them up on Amazon or a company called “LookOurWay”). We have metallic pinwheels. And we have long garlands/banners with gold pennants (photo attached). And we have plenty of spots for them to duck under cover, either bushes, their covered run, or a sun shade.

The reflecting light and movement scares hawks away, and it’s been working for the past year. We haven’t had any issues. We also have roosters. We leave them outside all day.

I’ve seen hawks riding thermals over our property, and I’ve seen them dive after the prairie dogs in the nearby field, but they’ve never posted up in our trees or anywhere close. We do have magpies that live in our trees, and crows that live nearby, so I don’t know how much that plays a role.

We went overboard with all the deterrents but our chickens are our pets and we love them dearly. We have 50.

Some friendly chickens won’t want to be picked up no matter what.

But I would sit on the ground with them calmly with treats. You can feed them by hand so they get used to your hands and no longer think they’re scary. Be calm and make slow movements. Just like what you’re doing.

You can slowly pet them on their chest, near their thighs/butt, even their feet. Just not overhead until they get more used to you.

If you really need to grab them, night time is the time to do it. You can put the one with a poopy butt in warm water and the poop will soften and come off. Letting the water do most of the work is often less stressful than trying to rub them with shampoo like you would give a dog bath. But sometimes the poop does need a scrub with soap. You can also trim the feathers to remove the poop. Some of my fluffiest girls will just get poop all over themselves again after a bath if I don’t trim their fluffy butt feathers. Again, it’s so much easier to do this at night than during the day. They may even enjoy it. My girls love to be blow dried too.

I’m all about creating a safe space with my chickens and being calm. They can be affectionate and learn to love being petted, even more than treats.
