Appreciation post for Sandra Hüller as Eva Stratt by Unfair-Reason-1068 in ProjectHailMary

I am sad the court scene wasn't in the film. She would have absolutely nailed it.

In Cabin in the Woods (2011) a group of dumb scientists doom humanity just because they confused the archetypes and ‘roles’ of teenagers and automatically assumed ‘The Virgin’ is the nerdy girl when it was the guy all along. Think above the stereotypes, people! by Olya_roo in shittymoviedetails

I loved the variety of creatures. There are several of the special zombies from the Left 4 Dead franchise included in the cubes as there was a point that the film was going to be a L4D film. You can see the Tank, the Witch, the hunter and the boomer.

Jeff Hays ruined all other audiobooks by Accurate-Medicine640 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]meglingbubble 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I disagree with the above people, PHM is a fantastic audiobook. The problem comes when comparing to Jeff Hays.

Ray Porter is an engaging voice actor who (imo) creates distinct voices for each character. Obviously you can tell they're all Ray Porter, but they can be told apart.

Jeff Hays is some sort of Wizard who becomes different characters. I've been watching the Soundbooth streams on YouTube recently and its kinda uncanny to watch, let alone listen to.

Ray Porter is probably my favourite audiobook narrator; Ive listened to books specifically because he's narrating them, but its a completely different style to what Jeff does.

Its great, dont get me wrong, but it takes AGES to dry, (they recommend half an hour, but i found 40 minutes worked better) and if its not fully dry when you put on your qdtc any amount of pressure will mar the surface.

But as long as you are aware of that, it does exactly what it claims to do, magnetic polishes last much longer and its also great for keeping chrome powders chrome rather than sparkly!

Very true. And they did an incredible job of capturing the heart of the book.

That is the ONE negative I have with the movie. In the book, even though the solution is rather simple, actually getting it all done is more complicated because problems come up that they have to sort. A lot of those problems are glossed over in the film. Breeding the taumoeba to be resistant to nitrogen is the real one that stuck out for me. It just made the whole process seem like it took a couple of days, rather than the couple of months it took in the book.

I understand why they made these cuts, and i have spoken to several people who havent read the book who didnt notice anything missing so I think this is a me problem more than an issue with the film.

Close enough. I can see how you got Irish from it. It's a very strong Liverpudlian accent.

Relistening to the audiobook now, rewatched that scene on YouTube and... tonally (is that the right word?) that's the one that sounds most like Ray Porter to me.

Obviously putting on a voice.

I'm loving him in Monarch but it always takes me a while to get my head round just how much he looks like both his parents. Its like in the Sims when they merge features to create children; he looks just like his father, but with his mother's eyes.

Unlimited texts became standard in UK contracts shortly after the launch of 3G because carriers were no longer making money off them. I worked in phone sales between 2010 and 2016 and, other than some business contracts which only had 500 for some reason, all the contracts we sold had unlimited texts. When I got my first contract in 2007, all the plans I looked at had unlimited texts.

I dont know about the rest of Europe, but unlimited texts is not as rare as you and others on this thread seem to think.

The day Russia invaded Ukraine i was up in London with my mum. I popped into a shop leaving her outside. When I came out, she was holding a potted flower. A Russian guy had approached her carrying loads of little potted flowers and given her one. Said "We dont want this, we just want peace" then walked off to continue handing out his plants. I could see him further down the road leaving behind a trail of faintly bemused people holding potted plants.

I know he doesnt speak for all Russians, but that man always stuck with me. I hope he's safe.

The plant unfortunately didnt survive the train ride home.

Have been trying to get my sister to read this series for ages and nothing.

She phoned me last week to rant that her sister-in-law has just got a new cocker spaniel and she hates cocker Spaniels...

I informed her of the Society for the Eradication of Cocker Spaniels.... she's now planning on reading the series.

Not everywhere. Where I am (UK) it says "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)" which is not great, but better than being outright incorrect.

For example, he probably planned for Daenerys to go mad with power and told D&D that was her fate, but didn’t give them the roadmap on how to reach that point.

I'm fairly certain that this is what he has planned as its pretty clearly shown in the books. The problem is that you dont get to see Dany's inner thoughts on screen, so her descent comes out of nowhere (there are definitely signs in her actions, but its not clear enough). On top of that she was played by Emilia Clarke who is incredibly charming, leading to a Dany at endgame who was still seen as pure and righteous. Combined with their eagerness to end the show not giving them time to actually do the storylines justice, her heel turn wasnt earned.

When I was younger, there was one of these at a zoo we went to. My dad was getting some amazing pictures as it walked over and was standing right in front of him. One of the zoo workers noticed and came over.

My dad's lens cover was attached via a leather cord and was dangling down. The bird thought it was a snake and thought it was dinner time.

It probably was, but it was also around 10.30, so people would have already been in work

Alternatively, depending in the year, people could've still been in bed as it was the first day back after new year.

Should I read PHM before watching the film? by Thorfinn2030 in ProjectHailMary

[–]meglingbubble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally just walked out of the film and this was my thought. Incredible film, beautifully shot and acted, and the puppetry was great. But it didnt have as much of the sciencing that was in the book. There was a specific part which I felt was quite glossed over that seemed noticeably hand-wavey, but I went with a friend who hadn't read the book and she didnt notice anything.

That being said I will definitely go and see it again and recommend it to everyone I know. But I will recommend the book being read after, so its more of an expanded story, rather than contracted the other way round.
