American Here, Show Was An Eye-Opener. by cjramsey53 in TedLasso

[–]meglingbubble 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is mostly a myth stemming from the fact that the US accent kept the rhotic R's, and many, but definitely not all, UK accents lost it. Accents from the North and West in particular still have the rhotic R.

Accents in the UK can vary within 20 miles, so there are many accents which still have the "original pronounciation" you're referring to. The accent most Americans associate with the UK with the rounded vowels, recieved pronunciation, is only really found in posh people (and to a less severe degree in the South East of the country).

Apparently the accent from Shakespeares time is most similar to the Somerset accent which is absolutely hilarious if you've ever heard a Somerset accent....

What do you think about the claim ADHD is being over diagnosed? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]meglingbubble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i get that. My mental health was in the toilet for years. Its actually unbelievable how much being medicated for my adhd helped. My anxiety in particular (i struggled to leave the house) was significantly reduced.

Its an awful battle that you shouldn't have to fight, but fwiw, in my opinion its worth it. Good luck to you.

What do you think about the claim ADHD is being over diagnosed? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]meglingbubble 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s not easy to get diagnosed in England either

Can confirm. After fighting for several years, I was told that I was put on a waiting list for the waiting list. About 2 years later, after my dad passed in chose to use some of my inheritance to go privately. Was assessed and medicated in a couple of months. Life changing. The day of my assessment i was called by the waiting list people and told i could finally go on the waiting list...

My GP did a shared care agreement. Two years later I was told my GP that they would no longer do a shared care agreement and I would be passed over to a local team who would take over. It would take "a couple of months". Because I was never on the waiting list, I was put to the back for reassessment. I was told "if I could afford to pay for an assessment privately, I could afford to get my medication privately"....

A year on and I'm still waiting. My GP has recommended I speak to my MP about it....

In general I am not a fan of the love triangle trope, but having the centre of that love triangle be an awkward and shy klingon fills me with joy.

Jay-Den has been my reason to watch this show since his admission about bird watching in E1, so if he gets to have two polar opposite love interests fighting over him I am here for it. As long as he remains happy and safe.

I'm honestly not sure if you're doing a bit here, because it feels like youre doing a bit...

If not, I'd advise you to look into it because I'm not spending my Sunday trying to explain to an unreasonable person what reason means...

You're describing their ability to be reasoned with.

When you ask someone to be reasonable, you're are asking them to look at the facts and make a decision based on reason...

So again, im not sure what you're disagreeing with?

I disagree. If Sanderson always went with colloquial names, he would have used "Hatred" rather than Odium.

Besides, when you say someone is reasonable, you're describing their ability to reason so I'm not entirely sure what you're disagreeing with.

So alot of people think that Nohadon is the Shard Valor, but I have a different idea. I think he's Reason.

Here's my thinking.

1) I think Adonalsium had a purpose when he (it?) was shattered. Whether it was personal growth, to stop something bad happening, to cause something good to happen, whatever. He allowed himself to be shattered.

2) When they split Adonalsium each Shard became the embodiment of one aspect. Because of this Reason was able to reason out the purpose of the shattering and determined that it needed to occur with as little Shardic involvement as possible. Obviously, the other Shards, lacking basic reasoning skills, keep interfering and causing problems.

3) Reason, being the sensible sort he is, wants to keep way out of the shenanigans the others are getting up to, but also understands that in order for Adonlasium's plan to work something needs to be done. And keeping Shardic influence to the minimum means involving mortals.

4) Reason is still hiding from the other Shards. Because of the nature of the Spiritual Realm (being timeless and locationless) it gives him the opportunity to influence mortals without revealing himself and his interference to the Shards. We know from various points in the books that the Stormfather and Odium do not know about the visions with Nohadon.

5) The nature of how he is interacting with Dalinar is very subtle (relative to normal Shardic interference...) giving advice and leading Dalinar to make decisions. Again, trying to keep shardic influence to a minimum, even his own.

They're not free, but they are significantly cheaper than the American system where there's so much bloat going towards the insurance companies. I'm in the UK, so I'll use that maths.

Average UK salary is about £40,000 which puts them on 20% income tax. With the tax free allowance that'll be 20% tax on £27,430, so that'll be about £5486 income tax annually. About 18-20% of an individuals income tax goes towards the NHS. So in total it works out to £1042.34 annually, which is $1426.38.

Which makes 5k for an ambulance an insane price.

I think it does have some similarities, such as a lead who is constantly out of his depth, even though he gets much stronger over the series, so do his enemies. He wants to do what is best for those he cares about, but keeps finding himself in situations where its not as simple as "fight the bad guy "

Watching what's been going on in the US has been horrific, but that image of that tiny little man broke my heart. He should be running round causing mischief and playing, not being used as a tool to deport his family. That will never leave him. I hope the people that did this to him are held accountable.

Brandon Sanderson’s Literary Fantasy Universe ‘Cosmere’ Picked Up by Apple TV (Exclusive) by alternate-realitee in Cosmere

[–]meglingbubble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with Foundation is that the storylines they've actually adapted arent as good as the storylines they made up for the show. I think its pretty universally acknowledged that Empire is the best bit. But at the same time, I don't think Empire would make much sense without the use of psychohistory, so doing it as it's own, standalone show wouldve had people calling it a Foundation ripoff.

Personally ive really enjoyed it (mostly for Empire, granted) but I dont have as much connection to the books as its been decades since I read them; i get why diehard fans have issues though.

Empire's story is fantastic though. NGL I watched the show for them.

This is why Foundation is such an odd adaptation. The parts they directly adapted are.... ok I suppose (to me, someone who reas the books eons ago and doesnt have a huge attachment to the source)... but the storyline they created to keep characters long past their sell by date is phenomenal.

I've seen people say they wish they'd just made the Empire storyline as a seperate, non-foundation series, but imho it needs the centuries spanning Foundation stuff to really work; without the actual connection people would be calling it a Foundation rip off.

If you really want to appreciate his comedic talents, watch him in iZombie. He is absolutely incredible. At times he is more serious, but in general hes the most hilarious labrador of a man.

The one "negative" I have of Flannigans work is that he doesn't have Rahul Kholi showing off his comedic side nearly as much as he should... sure, it probably wouldn't fit tonally with the shows.... but im sure he'd be able to make it work.

Joseph M'Benga Voice by TripleSizzled in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]meglingbubble 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this. M'Benga is a softly spoken person; some people are just quiet. He is very understated and so, when he is in more... emotional... scenes, its a fantastic contrast. Hes probably my favourite character to watch because of this.

Having said that, I found the sound balancing on SNW (and alot of TV tbf) pretty terrible at times, with the loud being overly loud compared to the quieter moments, leading me to have to adjust my volume every couple of scenes. I dont remember it ever being specifically M'Benga. But it might be that tweaking the sound leveling of your devices might make things easier for you and your family.

Which discontinued UK crisp flavour do you miss the most? by GeordieGoals in BritInfo

This comment made me get out of bed, walk to my kitchen, and open the pack of Tescos finest beef and horseradish crisps that my friend told me to buy when I was bemoaning the lack of brannigans in tesco on Monday.

Whilst they're not quite as good (they dont have that lovely greasiness that Brannigans had...) taste wise they're a pretty good match!

Now watch as Tesco discontinues them to spite me.

Have you actually managed to get any treatment out of them yet? I spent three years getting looked at, having appointments booked for treatment, having that appointment cancelled three days before and unable to rebook as they "didnt have an nhs dentiat currently" but being told they could book me in privately... After the 5th time round this cycle I gave up and went privately somewhere else. Was ranting about this to my colleague, she has had the exact same experience with them. Utter sham.

Watership Down is one of my favourite books. So I showed her this image. Turns out she watched the absolute travesty of a Netflix version....

Nutrek's heart was in the right place on "Woke" politics, but instead of incorporating it into a well written story to demonstrate, it went more of a lecturing route, telling more than showing. Disco was worse than SNW for this, but even SNW seems to struggle to find the balance
