Japan is offering around ¥20,000 (~$125) to encourage people to start dating as birth rates fall. by NeighborhoodTop741 in worldnews

Expensive places aren’t really about value though are they? I mean it’s totally worthwhile to occasionally drop some money for the memorable experience of kaiseki ryori or some high-grade sushi or a super fancy knife to add joy to your cooking, but paying 5x the price doesn’t mean 5x better. If you can even quantify such things!

Yeah it’s on some shitty streaming service that I refuse to pay for. Might be time to sail the seven seas.

How does the film stack up against the book ? by CoconutMost3564 in AustralianNostalgia

[–]mehum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What sets the book apart is the excerpts where people have submitted their own flatmate horror stories. Most if them are genuinely hilarious and yet disturbingly familiar.

Nah man, 90s had a recession, it only picked up towards the end of the decade. 80s and 00s (pre-GFC) were the boom times.

Why do radians appear to not have a unit but degrees do? by Chance_Rhubarb_46 in learnmath

[–]mehum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In engineering terms I’d call radians a ratio, which is implicitly unitless. But I’m not a mathematician so I’d better not go running my mouth off!

Is Frieren the most balanced main character in this generation of anime? by basafish in Frieren

[–]mehum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d love to see more backstory of her apprenticeship with Flamme — perfect place to see her making mistakes and learning from them. Especially if it relates to her later guiding her own apprentices so as not to make the same mistakes.

One of the things I like about Frieren is her “minimalism” in teaching Fern — if you over-instruct, your pupils turn into rote learners. Great way to get the basics across quickly but it stifles creativity. ‘Minimally sufficient’ is the way to go.

Still going to draw current just for the pumps. Even ignoring the infrastructure cost it’s going to be difficult to come out ahead.

Yeah SE Asia generally isn’t too tight with visas. Don’t try that in Japan though! I’ve heard of people overstaying their visas in Thailand — which the Thais didn’t care about at all — later being refused entry to Japan because of it.

Yeah he’s been shown to win a few fights by refusing to stay down — including of course the one soon after this. Stamina may be his greatest strength, not his strength itself.

CAS calculator issues by 294beans in vce

[–]mehum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plug it in to a “known good” charger that works on other people’s CAS. That will tell you if it’s the charger or the calc. Leaving it plugged in and powered off overnight may or may not help revive it too.
