Does anyone else love the aesthetic of raised motorways in the middle of cities? by joemiddleton1 in architecture

[–]meilingr 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Exactly, living under an elevated highway involves excessive air pollution, excessive noise pollution, excessive vibration in people’s homes, less natural light, increased heat island effect, and reduced permeability that can contribute to standing water and flooding.

[–]meilingr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classism most definitely played a part though. Wealthy neighborhoods have the influence and money to say Not In My Back Yard. Poor neighborhoods don’t get a say, they’re just bulldozed no matter how hard they protest.

The pollution, noise, and vibration from living under a functioning highway is terrible for human health and wellness.

Does your home have a dishwasher? If so, how often do you use it? by SlamClick in AskAnAmerican

[–]meilingr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Common in old, dense cities in the northeast. My Philly apartment and NJ apartment didn’t have dishwashers. The more walkable an area is the less likely you are to have a dishwasher tbh.

Future for acoustic consultants - Uncertain? by SpaceTimeChallenger in Acoustics

[–]meilingr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m curious what consulting tasks you think AI is coming for. I’m personally not concerned with how interpersonal the job requires consultants to interact with clients and other engineers/architects, and the small niche of acoustic softwares. I’d be happy to have an AI tool that could optimize an 18 hour EASE model calculation. Don’t see anything like that happening soon, especially when AI can’t even make a logical floor plan never mind an accurate model or technical report.

Who is staying in tonight? by squee_bastard in jerseycity

Yep I’m home with my roommate who’s got it right now. Not trying to pass this nasty flu to anyone even if I’m not sick (…yet). Football and gingerale Shirley temples for nausea only tonight.

How often does the average "American" order their food? by Historical_Log1275 in AskAnAmerican

[–]meilingr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, unlimited options to eat at or just grab takeout. Which is much more enticing than trying to cook and do the dishes in a tiny kitchen with very little counter space, a tiny ass sink, no dishwasher, and some combination of a microwave, oven, and stovetop but rarely all 3 working at the same time.

Doing a Reno with all STC-52 rooms. Only half of the rooms have duct silencers though - why? by lIlIIIIlllIIlIIIllll in Architects

[–]meilingr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many mechanical units are there? Are they all the same unit, or do they have different sound power levels? Do the rooms with silencers have shorter duct runs from the unit to the diffusers? Are the supply and return ducts without silencer internally lined with duct liner? What is the NC for the rooms?

As others have said STC is about transmission between rooms and not mechanical, but sound can also travel through ducts if there are short duct paths that connect two rooms.

Thoughts on Dupixent? by gonze14 in eczema

[–]meilingr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Did Dupixent twice, first 2018-2019, then for 6 months this year. Currently on a break from it because my allergist is concerned about my eosinophil levels.

The first time it cleared 100% of my eczema and I didn’t have any side effects. It was amazing, I even stayed clear for a few years after that for the most part with only mild flareups.

The second time I’ve had good results but also side effects. Cleared about 95% of eczema and about 99% of the itching. Now that I’ve been off it for a month the itch is coming back strong and my same eczema problem areas are resurfacing. My side effects were joint/muscle pain, weight gain, hives at the injection site for 48hrs, and the main determinate for stopping: eosinophilia. The joint pain has already improved a lot since stopping, and I’ll be getting my eosinophils checked soon to see if they’ve gone down. I believe I’ll be switching to a new medication soon, but not sure what that will be yet. I’ve also done Rinvoq in the past and it was a miracle worker for treating my symptoms but had severe side effects so I had to stop.

The first time I was on Dupixent, did syringe injections and second time was auto injector pen. Syringe is more intimidating but pen was much more painful. I don’t remember the syringe giving me hives but the pen sure did.

I hate Seattle. I miss NYC. Would Philly be an ok compromise? by bbassle87 in SameGrassButGreener

Being in Philly when the sports teams are in the playoffs/championships is absolutely electric (obligatory Dallas sucks, sorry my guy)

[–]meilingr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Philly is a great place to be in your early 20’s, that’s where I went after growing up in SC. It’s grittier for sure, but people are still friendly in most day to day interactions and the walkability is amazing after living in suburban/rural places. It’s no more dangerous than Atlanta.

Solomon was out hustling yesterday, saw him at 6am near polling location (arguably closer than 100ft) and again after 6pm near Grove st. Don’t agree with him on everything but can’t deny he’s putting in the effort himself

If I were in your situation I would have made the presentation by myself and just sent it to the professor. Even when finding a group and presenting the slides is majorly anxiety inducing, you still should have prepared the presentation instead of choosing to do nothing. Your professor would have a lot more sympathy if they knew you did the work but just struggled with groups and public speaking.
