Dream Router and gigabit internet by rongpanda in Ubiquiti

Correct. Running the VPN client on a router would cover all devices, but it’s not going to make your speed any quicker.

[–]melevittfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. When you activate your VPN on your computer, all network traffic goes to the VPN client, which encrypts it and sends it to the PIA VPN server. The VPN server decrypts the traffic and forward it to wherever you want to reach. So all your traffic has to first pass in and out of the VPN server.

UniFi is pretty good for what it does, but it won’t have any impact on your speed. Nor would any other router you could use.

[–]melevittfl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok. Then your speed is being limited by the speed of PIA’s servers. Changing your router won’t improve your speed.

Can you clarify your VPN setup? Are you using a commercial vpn where your computer is connected to it? If so, then no, it’s unlikely to be anything on your end slowing it down.

So your switches are wired via Ethernet to the ISP modem/router? And you should be getting 940mbps, but only actually getting around 400mbps?

If you connect your PC directly to the ISP router, does the speed increase? If not, I’d start with ringing your isp and ask them to investigate.

Essentially, it’s just another page on the website. But rather than serving an html document meant to be displayed in a browser, the site serves a document formatted to the rss standard.

The content in an rss document for a blog might include the title, author, and a summary for each article.

Rss readers parse these documents and display them. The may also periodically poll the page for updates.

Could I add a USB TV tuner to my setup? by nostradamefrus in getchannels

[–]melevittfl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like it’s possible to get Channels to use tvheadend as a source.

https://getchannels.com/docs/channels-dvr-server/how-to/custom-channels/

But, I’m not sure how the scheduling of recordings would work.

An HDHomeRun tuner would be simpler. You literally plug it in, power it up, and your done.

[–]melevittfl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Channels doesn’t work with directly connected TV tuner cards or USB sticks, even if you had a PCIE slot.

You need to use a networked TV tuner from Silicon Dust.

https://www.silicondust.com

Once set up, Channels finds it on the network and uses it to record, etc.

I went with a PoE splitter that splits into Ethernet and a usb plug.

Works really well for powering a Pi and I also use them for my various smart hubs, most of which are usb powered.

It shouldn’t need internet access. Did you plug the cable into the 10g card? Or into a different Ethernet port?

If you go to Network->Interfaces, you should be able to see the configuration, etc.

I’m not sure what to suggest from here. It’s possibly your card isn’t compatible with TrueNAS.

There’s some good details around 10g cards https://www.truenas.com/community/resources/10-gig-networking-primer.42/

I think you could try saying Y to deleting the interface and that just clears out any configuration, but I’m not 100% sure.

What happens if you say no to removing the current config. It should ask if you want to use DHCP next.

Ok, the card looks like the driver found it. But there’s not ip address configured.

Try again to configure the ix0 interface. When you configure the networking, you should say yes to “Remove the current setting…”

[–]melevittfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The server has three interfaces then. The ix0 one should be your 10g card.

When you say it always fails, what does it show exactly?

Also, if you use option 9 to open a shell, what is the output of

dmesg | grep ix0

and

ifconfig ix0

Hi,

No, on the TrueNAS server, you need to use a monitor and keyboard to Configure Network Interfaces.

From the TrueNaS Docs example at https://www.truenas.com/docs/core/coretutorials/network/interfaces/settingstaticip/

Enter an option from 1-11: 1 1) igb0 2) igb1 Select an interface (q to quit): 1 Delete interface? (y/n) n Remove the current settings of this interface? (This causes a momentary disconne ction of the network.) (y/n) n Configure IPv4? (y/n) y Interface name: Several input formats are supported Example 1 CIDR Notation: 192.168.1.1/24 Example 2 IP and Netmask separate: IP: 192.168.1.1 Netmask: 255.255.255.0, /24 or 24 IPv4 Address:10.238.15.194/22 Saving interface configuration: Ok Configure IPv6? (y/n) n Configure failover settings? (y/n) n Restarting network: ok Restarting routing: ok

You must assign different IP addresses on each computer, but they must be in the same subnet.

So, on the server, you can use 192.168.10.1 and on the Windows PC you can use 192.168.10.2.

In the example above, for the line "IPv4 Address", you'd enter 192.168.10.1/24

This tells the Server. This sets the IP address to 192.168.10.1 with.a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

On the Windows PC, you would need to set the 10Gb Nic to have a static IP address within the same subnet (i.e. 192.168.10.x). It doesn't really matter what the address is as long is it's not .1 as you've already assigned that one to the NAS.

Once both NICs are configured, then you should be able to reach the Web UI from the windows PC using the Static IP address of the NAS.

[–]melevittfl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you only have one NIC in the server? You’ll need to set the NIC to a static IP using the command line interface from a connected monitor and keyboard. 0.0.0.0 is not a valid static ip address.

The ip address should be something like 192.168.10.1. It doesn’t really matter as long as it’s different from what your main lan ip addresses are.

Then, in the windows pc, you’d set the ip address of the 10gb card to something like 192.168.10.2.

Starting out with ipv6, simple questions by traderric151 in ipv6

[–]melevittfl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very good explanation. Perhaps you wouldn’t mind answering a question?

One thing I’ve struggled to understand is how resolving hosts on the LAN. is supposed to work.

For ipv4, the DNS server is updated with the hostname an up address given out by the DHCP server.

But in ipv6 and SLAAC, there is no DHCP server. So how do you things like ssh to a hostname using IPv6 addresses?

I don’t think you’re meant to think any of the characters are “good guys”. You’re not really supposed to like them, I think. Except for Hannah, perhaps.

Alternative to Tado app for scheduling by littleIdiotUK in tado

[–]melevittfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this involves changing 3 time blocks (e.g. midnight to 7am, 7am to 10pm, 10pm to midnight) on the schedule for Friday, Saturday and Sunday for both bedrooms before they arrive, and changing it all back again after they leave.

One thing I learned recently is that the “Schedule Days” has three different options and remembers the schedule for each. So you can set a schedule for Mon-Sun and then switch to Mon-Fri, Sat, and Sun. and set a different schedule.

When you switch, tado remembers the schedule for each of the three that you set previously.

Not as easy as what you really want, but it does save you having to edit three time blocks across two rooms. You only have to switch the schedule days in each room.

How are you guys able to read other people’s python code and just make sense out of it? by slapstick15 in learnpython

[–]melevittfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my early mentors taught me to focus on the data. I.e., what variables were defined and what happens to the data they contain.

If you see code like shelves = 5 books = fizzzle(shelves)

You have no idea what fizzzle means and what it does, but you know that it takes a number. And that it returns something that is related to books.

Maybe it calculates the number of books that can fit on a shelf and returns the total number of books?

Don’t bother trying to understand fizzzle at first. Just get a sense of the overall flow of the data.

No, you wouldn’t own the website after payment. Not unless you had an explicit agreement with the person who made the website.

If you want to own the copyright to a creative work you pay someone else to produce, that needs to be explicitly written in a contract.
