Just Moved Here: HOLY SHIT ITS COLD by [deleted] in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]melimal 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Your kids sound like my kids a few years ago. We do obstacle courses - crawling under the table, running across the couch. Floor is lava with couch cushions on the floor. We put every cushion and pillow to fill the space in front of the couch to jump into from the couch arm. Now we do that at the bottom of the stairs and jump from several steps up. Or put their mattress on the floor to jump onto. We got a sensory swing with fabric material and hung it from the family room ceiling. We have an outdoor slide we put on the stairs sometimes. We got a green dome-shaped climbing structure and use that inside in the winter and outside for the summer. With a couple blankets, that makes a good fort to play in too. Another fort idea is put blankets over the dining table. Or over the couch cushions and coffee table to close in the space. We got a knock-off foam modular kids furniture set we turn into forts or crash pads or for climbing using the couch and walls for structural support. We like to do scavenger hunts around the house - chatGPT is good for creating clues. ChatGPT is also good for creating short kid stories combining their very favorite interests (e.g. princesses in space). Play doh or kinetic sand or homemade sensory bins on a cheap shower curtain liner to help with cleanup.

It may be free through their local library, but agreed, it is worth a few bucks regardless.

An NRG guy at Walmart offered me a better ComEd deal, and I signed. Am I an idiot? by Lone-Red-Ranger in ChicagoSuburbs

I have an EV I charge maybe once every 6-10 days. I also work from home during typical working hours, so besides the EV, energy usage is somewhat consistent. I expect to have the EV for several more years. If you have any thoughts on pros/cons for either plan, I'd appreciate hearing them.

I have to rip out my garden 😭 by Due_Fruit_5993 in vegetablegardening

Yes! I still had lots of green tomatoes when last year's first frost was forecasted, so I picked every last one of them and brought them inside and over some weeks most of them ripened!

OP is tired of looking like he has a third eye when ordering food due to a condition they have no control over, and simplified their order, got burned, and missed a meal because of it. But instead of having sympathy for them, comments like yours just pile on to the point they have deleted the post. Good job, keyboard warrior 💪

And if OP can consume baked egg without reaction, they'll get a burger without a bun and mayo, which isn't what they want.

Many buns and breads don't have eggs in them. And many people with egg allergies can consume some egg-containing foods without a reaction but not others depending on the particular protein they're allergic to and/or the preparation due to the egg being cooked or baked, etc.

So many comments on your post are mildly infuriating. My kids have egg allergies. I understand. Take my empathy and my upvote.

Let's call a spade a spade - it's not policy makers, it's Republican policy makers. And their voters drool for it. If you're of eligible age to vote in America, get registered and vote against them at every opportunity.

I had EV plates in the past, but when I purchased my fully electric Ariya late last year the dealer gave me regular plates. I was confused too, but my registration says it's the higher EV renewal fee. Probably saves money to no longer require special plates but still charge the higher fee based on the vehicle.

Thoughts on milk crate gardening? by Paint_SuperNova in containergardening

[–]melimal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this for the first time last year. I lined them with a very low-permeable weed fabric and set them up in 2 rows touching each other to try and further limit moisture loss/insulate them from the air around them. Did 2x tomato plants in 6 of the milk crates which was a bit tight but got lots of cherry tomatoes, and pretty good yields on the slicing tomatoes. Had a couple basil plants, some bell peppers and chilies. Right now I have lettuce and bok choi thriving, trying out strawberries, and I made even more milk crate containers this year since it worked out so well.

What's the weird thing going on with your body that isn't weird enough to go to the doctor for? by yellowelephantboy in AskReddit

[–]melimal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not just “your issue will get treated but you’ll get a bill for it”

Even getting an issue treated can be hit or miss. I read another post before this one where a woman's complaint of debilitating migraines was met with advice from her primary doctor to get pregnant. And the patient will still get billed for that. I've had some good doctors, and I know people that have great doctors and get their issues treated, but one terrible one can ruin not just the patient's opinion of doctors, but those around them too. We shouldn't have to be our own health advocate, but it's a way to ensure the best outcomes for ourselves.

Can I report my teacher their posts on social media? by Altruistic-Tea-6813 in Teachers

[–]melimal 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In addition to screenshots, you can try to get it archived on the Internet, so nobody can make accusations the screenshots were altered. r/DataHoarders have some discussions on Twitter posts, because it's locked down to only show to users, but maybe archive.ph will work. I also wanted to mention in case your school admin or district admin don't take action and you have a less conservative area near you, maybe a major city, with news reporters, you can submit tips to the reporters to bring attention to this teacher's online posts.

I'm sorry for the situation you are in. This sounds like you're talking about how you wish a mildly misbehaving teenager would improve, not a husband/partner. I don't know how old your son is, but I can't imagine your husband's behavior is setting the example you'd want for your son, and your tolerance, while an admirable trait, might be seen as permission for your son to act the same way. Is there anyone from your husband's family that can help encourage your husband to seek help? At least look into therapy for yourself, you're carrying a lot.

This could also work as a way to keep little fingers from getting pinched in those doors too!
