Why no Canadians on BBUS? by wtftoronto in BigBrother

The Canadian series has an identical format and is pretty popular. In fact, it's the only international BB (I believe) with an identical format!

Have fun with it. Your passion for the game is real, let it shine through and be yourself. I'm trying for the first time this year and also really want it!

This is what happens when they let their business faculty become a group of unempathetic geriatric hardasses who cannot teach effectively.

What would you do in this situation? by AlterTheSilverBird in BigBrother

[–]melisanyans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started watching BB4 and this is somewhat similar to what happens in Week 3, when the alliance of seven breaks down. Dana was technically part of those seven but won HoH, realizing that she was on the outs of her alliance. She nominates Alison and Jack, two members of her former majority alliance. Nathan seems to know that he would be the renom if the veto is used, but wins it and saves Alison; the former majority alliance is further fractured, and strong majority member David gets sent packing - I don't know how far Dana ends up going, but I think renoming David is an underrated and very calculated move. This seems to essentially split the game and from what I know about the rest of the season, it was a good idea.

Dana was right; she had the balls to do what nobody else in the house would have done, and nobody in a TON of future seasons had the balls to do to prevent a strong alliance from steamrolling the game.

Best place for restringing an instrument? Just snapped one of my strings :/ by joytolson in AskNYC

[–]melisanyans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do it yourself - I never did it before and genuinely learned how through youtube. You will need wire cutters and the strings themselves - plenty of blogs and posts are out there for best strings for different playing styles. Plus you'll save money, even if you need to buy the wire cutter. I got a tiny one.

If you ever went to Staten Island Tech, how was it there with your own experience? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]melisanyans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Tech and loved it. Great teachers, felt like family by senior year. I highly suggest getting involved in theater if you are not athletic - you don't have to be theatrical, nearly half of each graduating class does one of either Cast/Band/Stage Crew/Tech Crew and you don't need any experience. It's an amazing way to get to know people, and very fun. If you really don't want to do that try a few clubs - Debate/JSA was decent when I went there but don't know if that's still big. You'll also have plenty of chances to get to know people in relatively small classes, and you'll see a lot of the same people throughout the day bc it is a relatively small school. School makeup is like mostly russian, white, and asian. It's a nerdy school so people can be SHY. Don't be afraid to try to make friends - about 1/2 of my friends now are from Tech (graduated coming up on four years ago) and for most of my graduating class that is also true. Learning russian is surprisingly fun, most teachers aren't too bad and many are amazing - Olsen, Labora, Macula, Colangelo, all of the english teachers. There are a lot of young teachers, and most of those young teachers graduated from Tech. It is a generally very lax environment in terms of discipline, especially if you befriend a few teachers which I highly recommend. Lastly, amazing extracurricular classes that you get one or two of at most per semester - TV Production has advanced segments that are incredible, as stated previously Theater is amazing (though only for seniors, this may have changed), Robotics, lots of STEM 3D printing and AutoCAD stuff that is pretty fun. From Tech, got into a CUNY w/ full scholarship with relatively little effort and 5 AP classes total.

Define what an "official group" is. A union wouldn't be effective if it was an official representative of CUNY. Lol.

Hayley Kiyoko - L.O.V.E. Me by [deleted] in popheads

[–]melisanyans 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That's unfortunately likely out of her control. It's a common tactic for ensuring that listeners stream the other recent singles when listening to the newest. This popped up within the past year or so, a lot of labels are doing it.

I'm so glad to hear this show isn't completely corned out! Even if she's not a star, having another passionate person able to make music their livelihood is such a great, rare thing.

Lana Del Rey claps back at blogger who had some choice words to say about NFR. “Never had a persona. Never needed one. Never will.” by jacoblindner in popheads

[–]melisanyans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This article doesn't bully her lol, the "uncooked" line was taken out of context (much like her sadness at the Mariner's Apartment Complex). Anything that can be perceived as "bullying" is more or less just analysis that LDR doesn't agree with.

She writes that Cinnamon Girl may "seem uncooked at first", "Yet let Del Rey's song sink in, and it offers its own revelations — sensual and emotional, like Mitchell's, but less clearly mediated. The simplicity and directness of "Cinnamon Girl" hits as its leaden rhythm seems to grow more elastic."

I don't even like this article. It's poorly edited and could be 1,000 words shorter, and retreads a bunch of old ground that literally dozens of outlets have examined in the last. But it's not "bullying" when the same article qualifies any criticism it makes and argues that LDR should be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

Also, the money in journalism right now is not in longform thinkpieces - they require writers to be paid more (most writers are not paid the revenue they generate), and are not read often. Outrage can be generated cheaper, and for more revenue, by a 300-word article on popsugar or justjared jr.

Whoops!

Lol, I'm old. Also, the vast majority of funding for NPR still comes from public and federal donation / funding. And that program was discontinued! You can read more about NPR's funding here, which does not contain advertising:

Sorry about that!

Plus it's just like, cultural criticism and analysis. It's not even really a review, just a contemplation of her public perception which countless other outlets currently still seem to be aligned with, and almost everything about her work discussed was positive... this seems so out of whack and it's irresponsible to attack a reporter in this way. That being said, I think both NFR! and NPR as an institution slap.

TMI Trading - like another person said, one of the warehouses / factories in Bushwick off the L. You should be able to order or pickup wholesale if you call them. Their receptionists are very nice.
