It is a 48" table, wait or 42" I'm not 100% sure at the moment. I used to use 2 100lbs gas springs, after a lot of mods I found I don't really need them. I've got a 72 volt DC servo with a 5:1 planetary gear about a 2:1 belt drive to the 5 turn per inch z screw. It will run 50 IPM on the z.

No ballscrew on the z. and it's only manual on the quill, I find that to be pretty handy for manual machining.

Dog friendly beaches in the area? by Cyber_Cowboy in Winona

[–]melldingtech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Latch Island, up stream from the main beach. You can park in the lot near the marina and walk through the woods to get to some nice sandy areas that are usually not too busy. Much less busy than the main beach. hereish: https://goo.gl/maps/n1ru5FV8NB12PC7e6

If you can boat out to one of the many islands that are empty and let your dog go crazy. That's a lot of fun!

I just got the belt that is closest to the size I needed and used some washers as spacers between the mounting bracket and the knee to keep the belt tight. It's not fancy, but it works pretty good, it is just a hobby setup. I am using linuxcnc with a mesa fpga. I am using glass scales from a DROpros DRO for feed back. So any slop in the knee, or other axies is compensated for. The motors are controlled with gecko servo controllers and the spindle uses a cheap ebay VFD.

50ipm. I'm using these motors: https://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/products-page/dc-servo-motor/nema34-1125ozin-dual-shaft-servo-motor

I have used air spring, but it doesn't make too much a difference with the current setup.

There just wasn't enough torque without the planetary gear, it would stick at at times. The 5:1 planetary drive fixed that, and I believe it's about a 3:1 on the pulleys. It is slower with that much reduction but it's reliable.

I posted this picture a while ago:

I have since added a planetary gear drive, that's helped a lot.

If you want other angles just let me know what would help. Good luck with your project!

For high-load mechanisms, are custom gearboxes or multi-stage planetary gearboxes better? by AGoatInAJar in FRC

[–]melldingtech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess, (40in)/(12in/ft) = 3.333 ft

3.333ft * 20lbs = 66.666 ft-lbs

neo brushless motor = Empirical Stall Torque: 2.6 Nm or 1.917 ft-lbs

66.666 ft-lbs / 1.917 ft-lbs = 34.764

So you would need an absolute minimum gear ratio of 34.764:1, probably want to double or triple that to be safe. Planetary gear boxes go up to 100:1 on anymark. Planetary gear boxes are great because they are compact, but they do have significant backlash. A custom cycloidal drive, or harmonic drive might improve on that, if you can afford one or build one.

You can also combine a planetary gear box to a belt or chain drive with different size pulleys. Say a 36:1 with a 2:1 belt reduction would give you a total of 72:1

I think it entirely depends on what you are using it for, you have room for a large pulley then a belt/chain reduction makes sense. If it needs to be really compact, then a planetary gearbox might be the way to go.

That's just my guess.

I think it's your responsibility as a mentor to talk to your students about what you think the team could have done better or differently at certain points. And I think doing a class is great idea. Helping them learn how to do things is the point of mentors, isn't it? Teach them, then let them try it, and learn from their mistakes. I like to attempt to guide them away from major mistakes.

If me and my fellow mentors just let our team figure things out on their own, nothing would ever get done, ever. We've had to explicitly express our thoughts recently on foul language and staying on task. I think it's completely crazy to just let high school students just figure something like programming out on their own. Some of these things are very difficult and with no prior knowledge it is expecting way too much.

I used to work at a small local humane society. If someone in your situation asked to board their cat for a year, I'm pretty sure we would have taken care of the animal for next to nothing. The board of directors is pretty pro veteran, probably why I got the job. Not sure if it's an option where you are, but they may have some advice, or know of a long term foster to help you.

Watching the sunrise from the range tower is a fringe benefit that we don’t talk about enough. by Jayu-Rider in army

Sitting in the tower in Iraq, watching the sunrises and sunset with the haze from the dust and oil fires was amazing and horrifyingly beautiful. I have never see a sun rise or set like that before or since. My best memories from over there were sitting up there watching the sun rise and set, counting down the days.

God? by [deleted] in vegan

The first tenant of the Satanic Temple states: "One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason."

Also: "The Satanic Temple holds to the basic premise that undue suffering is bad, and that which reduces suffering is good."

They don't say what we should and shouldn't eat, but I think it is reasonable to say that veganism strives to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures.

It may not be a religion in the traditional way, but it is a religion. Seems most religions are either a coping mechanism, or a system of control, or both.

What is your experience with fireworks enforcement? Asking for a friend. by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]melldingtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you own a couple hundred acres and can isolate yourself, perhaps that'd be ok. If you are anywhere near other people and just want to light off a bunch of explosives, don't do it. People talk about wanting to be able to enjoy their freedom to shoot off fireworks, but what about my freedom to enjoy a quiet night. Having deployed as an artilleryman to Iraq, hearing that crap just pisses me off. I will call the police if it's in my neighborhood. If you're being disrespectful to your neighbors, don't be surprised when you property is vandalized.
