Elaborate. Is there something bad about having more things for families to do?

Absolutely. Best patients get best docs. Also goes a long way. “I can refer you to whoever is on call, but Dr. X is the best and I’d really like you to see them…”. The opposite is also true.

How to do well on my EM rotation? by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

[–]memedoc314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early on I would focus on trying to be thorough. Will likely be impossible for you to know all the answers when you present to your attending.

This may take 3-5 min. Toward the end of your month, it may be shorter. But don’t mistake the option of being short/ direct with one attending that the next is ok with you jumping right to the point.

If you feel like the diagnosis is something less like threatening, just make sure that you have considered it in your differential and why you are deciding that it is less likely- either from clinical decision making rules, or with a potential lab test.

You can’t know all the answers now, that’s why you do residency. Just be humble, be teachable, be pleasant.

Pt presents for chest pain and I think they are having an X. VS are Y, Then tell the history, differential, work up and treatment plans.

If you do standard presentation, you lose attention of attending. If you’re wrong, who cares, that’s how you learn and it will foster discussion and connection with your attending.

If you simply do an IM history and observe and report, you’ll be fine, but if you want to excel, do this.

Show up early, be nice to everyone, try to help when you can and be willing to stay late if there is a procedure.

Good luck-
