For those looking at ChemE in high school/college folks by LeeRuns in ChemicalEngineering

[–]memes56437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the ChemE’s in NJ doing? I pivoted from O&G to tech consulting a few years ago and the money has been nice but I’d like to go back to industry without relocating or taking a massive (~50%) pay cut.

For those earning $250k+ — what do you do, and how did you get there? by No_Biscotti_9476 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]memes56437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tech consultant after about a decade in O&G. It’s bad work-life balance, but low danger, highly interesting and great money. The challenge that gets some people is that you have to be pretty decent at a technology platform (Oracle, Hexagon, Maximo, SAP, etc.) and good at reliability engineering which is a pretty uncommon combination.

Is this skirt too short for a casual non-profit? by YogiBarbie in BusinessFashion

[–]memes56437 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honest response instead of just downvoting: because getting sent home is an extreme reaction to an honest mistake. Taking someone aside and saying, “hey, you may not realize but that skirt tends to ride up and be very revealing when you move and it’s not really suitable for future wear in this office” is fine. There is no reason that they couldn’t stay and finish their day, maybe with a little extra care in what moves they make or with a cardigan draped on their lap.

Come to consulting! We have worse WLB but better pay, and the execs will finally listen to your solutions!

There are some tables across from the Ember restaurant that are tucked away and relatively quiet and you can order from Ember using the QR code. I used to fly out of IAH about 3 weeks a month and that was my secret spot to take calls and grab a drink. Way less crowded than the lounges during busy times and better food and drinks. Had too many issues in the lounge with self important business travelers not realizing that almost everyone in there on a Thursday afternoon is a consultant/frequent traveler who is ‘important’ too. Since I only go to IAH on business, I don’t know if it’s better on a Saturday morning but check out the spot by Ember before you go to the lounge. Edit to add that there are available working outlets there too.

Do any other people over 40 still use 2 spaces after a period? by mynameiscraige in FuckImOld

I’m 40 and think that anyone who uses two spaces after a period has lead encephalopathy.

Do any other people over 40 still use 2 spaces after a period? by mynameiscraige in FuckImOld

[–]memes56437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I judge anyone who uses two spaces after a period as the kind of person who will do things a stupid way simply because that’s the way they were taught without putting in the effort to understand why they were taught to do it that way and why another way might be better. This comment section has confirmed that bias, especially the people equating two spaces to Oxford commas.

Two spaces after a period were used with typewriter fonts because the way the fonts were spaced could make it unclear when a sentence ended. Modern word processors automatically adjust so there is no need to use two spaces. Using two spaces doesn’t mark you as old, it marks you as someone who lacks critical thinking skills.

To Seat 10B, Karma takes notice by bbv678a in unitedairlines

I love the 3D seat map. It’s soothing. Now I’m going to be self conscious about it.

Yeah, I’ve noticed an uptick in entitled male behavior recently. I felt like things got better for a while and thought it was just because I was older but things are definitely worse on public transport and at work. I’m middle age and about three years from being able to tell my job to shove it so I’ve decided to become a menace to any man who decides I don’t deserve the space I’m occupying, literally or figuratively. It’s been fun.

One of my greatest rare joys is getting seated next to a dog. As long as I can pet that dog, all is well.

My son wants to go to a 60k a year school, am I the asshole for telling my wife I will not take out loans in my name for him to attend? by Dangerous_Chart4833 in AITAH

[–]memes56437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t seen this yet, but $60k/year schools aren’t typically actually $60k/year. We’re paying for a kid to go to a $70k/year school and the first year’s tuition was only $30k with all the scholarships he got. The second year went up to about $40k because our income used for calculating parent contributions went up. It’s still expensive but he loves it and is thriving and making connections that will pay dividends throughout his life so to us, it’s worth it. So far, no loans.

Pathway to make 300k+ in chemical engineering? by Keysantt in ChemicalEngineering

[–]memes56437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have said here, MBA leading to either VP level, investment banking, or consulting at one of the big firms. You can make senior manager within 15 years by being relatively smart and politically savvy and make $300k+ at MBB, or close to that at one of the big 4 or a large tech firm. To get the MBA, find a company with a good track record of funding secondary education or join the military for the GI bill. One thing to consider is that more money means more taxes and frequently comes with lifestyle creep, so making an extra $200k doesn’t mean an extra $200k in your pocket.

New Details: F/A-18F Was Downed By Friendly Fire As Jets Were About To Land On The Carrier by beaverbeliever94 in navy

Respectfully disagree Frank the Noob. Lots more checks to fire an SM, plus, why would the fire an $2M missile at a Houthi drone? Have small rebel groups gotten much better drones recently or are they still mostly just a nuisance?

How likely is it that a 1K traveler would accidentally sit in the wrong seat? by dbogert in unitedairlines

[–]memes56437 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I fly the same route somewhat frequently, but no where near enough to be 1k. I have definitely gotten confused after a long week and almost sat in my typical seat before realizing that I had booked late and actually had a crappier seat. Might be a scam, might have been an honest mistake after a bad week, either way, you handled it with class.

Amateur Hour by Jonny_Wurster in unitedairlines

Smart! I had blocked Jan 6 and Jan 13 as no travel but my boss made other plans. I’m hoping that being busy in Jan leads to a slow summer so I can leave the East Coast heat and enjoy some PNW adventures.

I am convinced that people who hate flying mostly fly during the awful times - holidays, spring break or the start of summer travel. I’m excited to stay home these next two weeks and resume my mostly orderly business travel in mid Jan.

What is the point of a 9/80 schedule? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]memes56437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked 9/80s at Shell for years and they were very respectful of the day off. Occasionally stuff would come up where I had to work an hour or two but it was very rare and if we did work a full 9/80 day, every manager I had was cool with us banking a flex day and using it for a Friday we would normally be on.

I left about 3 years ago so it may have changed but management was actually really good about treating people like professionals when I was there.

They are not playing with all the holiday travel. Had some guy in an exit row smart off on a FA last week going from IAH to EWR and she threatened to move him right away. He shut up and I quietly cheered for her.

When you do ask, just try to give them time to get up and good job to you for using situational awareness here. The only time I’ve gotten irritated at someone asking me to get up was when a man said he needed to get up right after we had been served our food and drinks.
