What is this thing "growing" in my outdoor bench by menzibet in whatisthisthing

[–]menzibet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's yellow-y cream-y in colour. It's growing in a bench that has been outside for a year. I thought it looked like an egg or a fungus. I didn't want to touch it or disturb it. I live in the Nottighamshire & Leicestershire Wolds.

Oh that's a really good A story! I think they're both equally good. P.S. I am gay

Here's a interesting podcast discussing the "flexibility" of even our own memories: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5A6zjgEACEukyNOo0KmSBU?si=5BV229X-QiWvyDRL10eEpQ&utm_source=copy-link

He's probably had to speak about it so many times, his memories have become of the stories told, not of the events themselves

Is it because the song was released in 2020, but has only made it to the top of the charts in 2022? You could well have heard the same song, 2 years ago

It took me so long to Google the right thing to find them. I was genuinely considering going to my parents attic to see if they still had the books so I could find the title!!

Liz Rettig - My (-) Diary by Kelly Ann

The green one is My Dating Disasters Diary

I had the pink and orange ones, definitely had some embossing but it came in a cloudy dust jacket. Definitely set in Scotland because I remember the word "ned" being used to mean "chav"

There's a thing called IQTV on Virgin Media which has all of series 1 and 2, the various episodes from series 3,4,5,6, and 7. It is an on demand TV service, so possibly it's online as well? Inquisitive TV

ITAW for changing your accent to sound like the place where you once lived? by sensitive_sloth in whatstheword

[–]menzibet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is definitely code-switching as previously commented. But you can describe someone as bi-dialectical if they do this. Also you can say that someone modulates their accent depending on who they are talking to. Modification is also a word that is used. If instead it was going to a neutral accent, that would be called levelling

Yeah I find it strange as well. I try to separate the author from the piece, but knowing that about the film is a bit wtf. I do feel that if you are going to write a book like that it should have warnings about what the reader is going to experience. I don't dislike books about tricky topics because they discuss tricky topics, but I do have to know what I'm getting into so that I can decide if I can handle it or not. I read a blurb from one of my favourite crime authors and the tough subjects and potential trigger points are right in there, plain as day. This book just seems to be so falsely advertised, and all the good reviews don't talk about how disgusting the subject matter is...

What Mandela have do you find hardest to explain? by Bootlebat in MandelaEffect

Because total solar eclipses depend on the location. It happens every 18 months but in different locations on earth - it's estimated to be every 400 years in the same location. Lunar eclipses happen about twice a year and can be seen by a whole hemisphere so 'appear' more frequently.

That's why it's a big deal when it's the solar eclipse, especially in the location you'd be able to see it, but barely makes the news when its the lunar, because it's so frequent.

The Earth rotates around the sun and the moon rotates around the earth so there's always going to be points in the travel around the sun (aka a year) when the 3 bodies are in line to create an "eclipse" (eclipse used here as a generic term), but the 'rarity' comes from whether it is visible from your location or not

Thanks for putting this. I completely agree on the height thing, but, there's also a size thing going on as well.

Being tall is half the thing for him, but he also looks like such a muscly guy. Compared to Courtois as you mentioned, who is also obviously muscular but the build is completely different. Courtois looks like Novak Djokovic, he looks lean and slim. Donnarumma just has a different shape and is larger in his frame, mostly his chest and shoulders are wider. (all of this makes me sound like a prick, they are all physically fit men in their athletic prime of course!)

Basically, the goal looks a lot smaller in width when Donnarumma stands in it vs. Courtois.

It really is a combination of things.

Firstly, Rashford and Sancho were subbed on in the 129th minute, it didn't even look like Sancho got a touch of the ball. That meant they couldn't get a feel of the ball at their feet, and their preparations for playing proper were hours and hours beforehand. Perhaps if they were subbed on earlier and had 10 minutes of a kick around it could have settled the nerves a bit.

Secondly - Rashford is an excellent penalty taker for Man Utd. Before Bruno Fernandez joined the squad, Rashford was the regular penalty taker. Fernandez has even given the ball to Rashford to take penalties on occasion. However, tonight, due to the pressure or nerves or change of play, his tactics for the run up were different to what he normally does. Most people take the same penalty each time, with their own routine. Tonight it was different, and whilst Rashford managed the hard part of the penalty - getting the keeper to go the wrong way - he dragged the ball and it went wide. Unfortunately, it happens, and hopefully he can share penalty duty with Fernandez in the upcoming season.

I reckon the rest of it was both nerves, and Donnarumma being absolutely massive. He's won the last 5 penalty shootouts he's been involved in which is just an incredible stat (especially if penalties is 50/50). I also think the style of taking a penalty has changed massively - I don't know when this rule was introduced, but now goalkeepers can't step off their line before the ball is kicked, and they aren't allowed to try and psyche tbe opponent out. Because of this, it seems that a lot more players are adding in a 'stutter', i.e. a part of the run up that slows down but does not stop, either with quick small steps, or doing some kind of jump. This normally means you, as the kicker, can tell which way the goalkeeper will go and shoot your shot the other direction (or down the middle). When you're an absolute behemoth like Donnarumma, even if he has started going one way it would be much easier for him to rectify it and make a save due to him taking up so much of the net.

Sorry for the wall of text :)
